My Happy Marriage: The Shape of My Happiness is a Japanese light novel by Akumi Agitogi, first published in 2019 with illustrations by Tsukiho Tsukioka.

The story follows Miyo Saimori, a young woman mistreated by her family, who finds unexpected love after being sent to marry the cold-hearted soldier Kiyoka Kudō.

With over 9 million copies in circulation, the series inspired a manga, anime adaptation, stage play, and a live-action film.

Set in a Taisho-inspired world filled with supernatural abilities and political intrigue, this series blends romance, fantasy, and traditional Japanese aesthetics into a Cinderella tale with a unique twist.

Akumi Agitogi crafted the story around the theme of a mistreated elder sister—echoing popular web novel trends—transforming the “abused and resilient elder sister” into a tale of self-worth and recovery.

The author wanted to highlight the quiet strength and perseverance of Miyo Saimori, intentionally designing Kiyoka Kudō’s character as her natural counterpart, evolving him through the writing process.

Agitogi set the world in a Taisho- and Meiji-inspired era to fuse Western and Japanese cultural elements, motivated by a fascination for this period’s aesthetics and cultural transitions, despite the daunting historical research.

Influences cited by the author include fantasy works like RDG Red Data Girl and Elegant Yokai Apartment Life, with the intention of using supernatural elements not just for spectacle, but as dramatic spice and narrative depth.

The setting is a fictional empire inspired by early 20th-century Japan, where families inherit special abilities—known as “supernatural powers”—to fight against demonic beings and defend the empire.

Superpowers range from pyrokinesis to telepathy to future sight.

The Usuba clan, Miyo's maternal lineage, are famed for their mind-manipulation and dream-related powers, seen as dangerous yet crucial for maintaining the empire’s balance.

Women like Miyo, who seemingly lack these abilities, face prejudice and are considered unworthy by their own families.

Miyo Saimori, born without powers in a famed supernatural family, is relentlessly abused by her stepmother Kanoko Saimori and half-sister Kaya Saimori after her biological mother Usuba Sumi dies.

At age 19, she’s cast aside and arranged to marry Kiyoka Kudō, a feared but lonely soldier.

Anticipating cruelty, Miyo instead finds compassion and warmth in Kudō, who’s misunderstood due to his harsh reputation and deep-seated mistrust of women.

Through tentative steps, the two begin to heal and grow, Miyo slowly opening her heart thanks to Kudō’s kindness.

As her supernatural “dream-seeing” power awakens, Miyo becomes entangled in the country’s political struggles, dark family secrets, and the ambitions of those who covet her rare abilities.

Overcoming major challenges together, Miyo and Kudō ultimately marry in the seventh volume, signifying her journey to happiness and self-acceptance.

An anime produced by Kinema Citrus aired its first season from July to September 2023, followed by a second season from January to April 2025, featuring a total of 26 episodes plus OVA content.
