Meg Raspberry, a 17-year-old apprentice witch, is suddenly told a shocking truth on her birthday by her magical mentor, Faust, who is also one of the world-renowned Seven Sages, known as the Eternal Witch. She has only one year left to live. The only way to change this fate is to create a special magical item called the "Seed of Life." The ingredient for this is the tears of joy shed by people.

"How many tears are needed?" Meg asks, to which Faust replies, "Tears from a thousand people are needed." Meg, facing this difficult quest, continues to meet and interact with many people. Joining her journey are her childhood friend and best friend Fine, one of the Sages, the Witch of Wisdom, Inori, and the young Sage, the Witch of Blessings, Sophie.
