Devil Survivor 2 is a tactical role-playing game developed and published by Atlus for the Nintendo DS, later enhanced for the Nintendo 3DS.

The story follows a group of teenagers who gain the power to summon demons via a mysterious mobile app, fighting to survive in a world under apocalyptic siege.

The Septentrione Arc

After a mock exam, the protagonist is persuaded by his friend Daichi Shijima to register on a mysterious mobile site called "Nicaea."

The site delivers death-clip videos showing the future deaths of acquaintances.

On their way home, the protagonist, Daichi, and classmate Io Nitta simultaneously receive videos of themselves being crushed by a derailed subway train.

Moments later, an earthquake strikes and the exact disaster unfolds before their eyes.

Just as death seems certain, demons burst from their phones to protect them before turning hostile.

After a hard-fought victory, the demons submit and vanish—granting the trio the ability to command devils.

Emerging onto the devastated surface, they witness a massive creature called "Dubhe" fall from the sky and incinerate crowds with explosive force.

Separated from Daichi during the chaos, the protagonist uses the death-clip site to track him to Senso-ji Temple, where a demon named Hakujoushi threatens his life.

Aided by a mysterious woman named Makoto, they defeat the demon and learn she belongs to a secret organization called "JP's."

After joining forces with JP's leader Yamato Hotsuin, they discover the world is collapsing under an otherworldly assault.

To rebuild their shattered reality, they must confront an entity known as the Administrator and prove humanity's worth.

The fate of the world rests on whether their conviction can reshape existence itself.

The Triangulum Arc

Following the events of the Septentrione Arc, the protagonist suddenly regains memories of the previous world while living in a reset timeline.

Although Io and Daichi are his friends again, neither recalls the apocalyptic struggle they shared—until new death-clips arrive.

During an idol concert by Airi and Hinako, a new breed of invaders called "Triangulum" attacks, destroying the city with devastating beams.

As demons once again emerge from their phones to save them, the battles trigger the return of lost memories in his companions.

Reuniting with scattered allies, they learn that the JP's director is now Miyako Hotsuin—not Yamato, who apparently never existed in this timeline.

Even Nicaea's administrator, the being known as Ureu Mono, has vanished without a trace.

After a shared nightmare where an enemy named Arcturus slaughters them, the group realizes they have foreseen their own doom.

Only the protagonist is absent from the dream—hinting at a pivotal role in averting this catastrophe.

Hibiki Kuze (Protagonist)

An 18-year-old high school student whose natural charisma and tactical brilliance make him the linchpin of the group.

Voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya, he begins with the ability to summon Byakko and steadily grows into a leader capable of uniting powerful allies.

His calm demeanor belies a playful sense of humor, and he never loses his cool—even when the world is ending around him.

Where others panic, he strategizes, earning the trust of everyone from rebellious hotheads to cold-hearted pragmatists.

In the Triangulum Arc, Hibiki alone retains full memories of the previous timeline.

When his body begins to mysteriously fade, it becomes clear his very existence is tied to the fabric of reality itself.

Daichi Shijima

Hibiki's childhood friend and the emotional heart of the team, voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto.

Though often anxious and quick to panic, his ordinariness grounds the group and reminds them what they're fighting for.

He starts the game by introducing the Nicaea site to Hibiki, inadvertently setting the entire story in motion.

Despite his lack of combat prowess early on, Daichi's courage grows—his truck-ramming stunt against Dubhe proves even a "normal guy" can save the day.

In the sequel arc, he becomes more proactive but remains magnetically attracted to misfortune.

Whether being tailed by enemies or getting captured during a bathroom break, his comedic misfortune never overshadows his genuine loyalty.

Io Nitta

Voiced by Aya Uchida, Io is a gentle and intelligent classmate who initially struggles with self-confidence.

Afraid of being disliked, she often suppresses her own opinions to match the people around her.

The tragedies she endures—including the death of her parents—nearly break her, but Hibiki's support helps her find inner strength.

When she becomes a vessel for the deity Lugh, her latent power transforms her into one of the party's most valuable assets.

In the Triangulum Arc, Io's personality has blossomed; she speaks her mind freely and has already formed a close friendship with Hibiki.

Now assertive without losing her kindness, she is often the first to notice when something is amiss.

Yamato Hotsuin

The 17-year-old director of JP's, voiced by Junichi Suwabe, is a calculating prodigy raised to defend Japan at any cost.

He despises weakness and believes only those with talent, strength, or intellect deserve to shape the world.

Despite his icy demeanor, Yamato respects proven competence and gradually comes to see Hibiki as an equal rather than a subordinate.

His sheltered upbringing means he's adorably clueless about everyday life—he'd never tasted takoyaki before Hibiki introduced him to it.

Yamato's ideal world is one governed by "meritocracy," where the strong lead and the weak serve.

His conviction is so absolute that he is willing to become the final obstacle if Hibiki chooses a different path.

In the Triangulum Arc, Yamato is conspicuously absent—his very name erased from the Hotsuin family records.

He is eventually found in the Akashic layer, tirelessly restoring Hibiki's corrupted data at the cost of his own existence.

Ureu Mono (Al Saiduq)

A mysterious silver-haired youth voiced by Takahiro Sakurai, who appears at pivotal moments to test or aid the protagonist.

He possesses incredible power, summoning demons without an app and obliterating enemies with a flick of his wrist.

Revealed to be a renegade Septentrione—the companion star Alcor—he has guided humanity since ancient times.

It was he who gifted mankind fire, writing, and the demon summoning app, trying to atone for the destruction his kind was sent to enact.

When his gentle nudges toward human potential are rejected by Yamato's ruthless pragmatism, Ureu Mono becomes a dangerous wildcard.

Depending on the player's choices, he can be a crucial ally, a tragic enemy, or the new Administrator of a reborn world.

Makoto Sako

A composed and capable JP's agent voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro, fiercely loyal to the organization that gave her purpose.

A former synchronized swimming prodigy, a career-ending accident left her searching for meaning—which she found in defending Japan.

Though duty-bound to follow orders, she frequently questions Yamato's harsher decisions and secretly aids civilians.

Her stoicism cracks in unexpectedly charming ways: when she accidentally lands on Hibiki's head after a teleportation mishap, she is completely flustered.

In the Triangulum Arc, fragments of her past-life memories lead her to the same path of service—even avoiding the accident that sidelined her.

She struggles with Miyako's agenda but chooses to support her, hoping to understand the truth beneath the secrecy.

Ronaldo Kuriki

A passionate former detective and leader of the resistance, voiced by Rikiya Koyama.

Furious at JP's abandonment of civilians, he fights tirelessly to protect the weak and dismantle Yamato's oppressive order.

His vision is a world of "equalitarianism," where all lives have equal value and no one is cast aside.

However, his righteous fury sometimes blinds him to his own hypocrisy—he justifies underhanded tactics if they serve his cause.

Despite their ideological clashes, Ronaldo comes to respect Hibiki as an honorable soul worthy of friendship.

In the Triangulum Arc, he remains an active police officer, channeling his relentless energy into protecting citizens within the system.

Nicaea Death-Clips

Short videos that predict the future deaths of people connected to the protagonist.

By viewing these clips and taking action, players can alter fate and prevent the foretold tragedies.

Demon Auction and Fusion

Demons are acquired through an auction system or by negotiating with them in battle.

Standard Shin Megami Tensei fusion mechanics allow combining demons into more powerful forms, with strategic skill inheritance.

Social Bonds

Deepening friendships with party members unlocks combat bonuses, shared abilities, and story-altering choices.

High bond levels can even convince ideological opponents to rejoin your side during the game's climactic schism.

Production

The 13-episode anime Devil Survivor 2: The Animation aired from April to June 2013, directed by Seiji Kishi at studio Bridge.

It adapts the core Septentrione arc with expanded character moments and a defined protagonist named Hibiki Kuze.

Theme Songs

The opening theme "Take Your Way" is performed by livetune adding Fukase (from SEKAI NO OWARI).

The ending theme "Be" by Song Riders brings each episode to a reflective close, while "Each and All" serves as a poignant insert song.

Manga

Two manga adaptations exist: *Show Your Free Will* (told from Io's perspective) and a direct anime comicization.

Both offer unique glimpses into the characters' inner thoughts and expanded dialogue.

Pachislot

A pachislot machine titled Devil Survivor 2: The Last 7 Days was released in 2015 by Olympia.

It features animated cutscenes and uses the anime voice cast.
