Birdie Wing

The project began when producers at BN Pictures were inspired by a newfound passion for golf.

Initially, the team considered a relaxed "slice of life" approach similar to “K-On!” but quickly shifted to a dramatic and action-packed direction after internal feedback and advice from Bandai Namco’s leadership.

The result: an original anime combining intense golf action, unique female characters, and a dose of wild sports fantasy.

BIRDIE WING also serves as the first official collaborative project between BN Pictures and HTC’s metaverse platform, VIVERSE.

Plans extended beyond the anime, including VR and console games.

The story takes place mainly in Nafres, a fictional European country plagued by poverty and mob influence.

Eve survives by winning money in underground golf tournaments, while Aoi Amawashi comes from Japan’s wealthy elite.

The anime blends real golf elements with over-the-top, almost "superpower" shots, in settings ranging from city slums to elite school courses.

Nafres as a setting has been used in previous works by the screenwriter Yosuke Kuroda, appearing in titles like "MADLAX" and "Best Student Council."

It adds a mysterious international flavor and allows the story to mix gritty underworld themes with elite sports drama.

Eve, a fearless girl living in the slums of Nafres, plays underground golf to earn a living for her makeshift family.

Her weapon: the “Rainbow Bullet,” a series of seven color-coded ultimate shots.

One day, she meets Aoi Amawashi, a cheerful golf prodigy from Japan dubbed the "Innocent Tyrant."

Their fateful match during the U15 Women's World Championship sparks a fierce but friendly rivalry.

Despite obstacles from the criminal underworld, Eve is driven by a desire to challenge Aoi again on a legitimate course.

The girls’ destinies intertwine, leading Eve to Japan, where she enrolls at Raio Girls’ Academy, Aoi’s prestigious school.

Throughout two seasons, Eve battles against formidable opponents, including mob golfers, pro-level rivals, and even VR golf challenges.

Secrets about Eve’s true parentage also come to light—she is the daughter of Kazuhiko Hodaka, a legendary golfer.

The anime is known for its fast pace, wild golf moves (like color-named “Rainbow Bullets”), and an ever-expanding cast of charismatic and sometimes dangerous women.

Rainbow Bullet:

A set of Eve’s signature special golf shots, each named after a different color, such as “Direct Blue Bullet” (a powerful driver shot), “Heaven’s Red Bullet” (a precise lob shot), and more.

Every shot has unique tricks or purposes for impossible golf situations.

Innocent Tyrant:

Aoi Amawashi’s nickname, referencing her ability to enjoy golf so purely that it psychologically unsettles rivals.

Nafres:

The main fictional country setting, rife with crime and underground golf.

U15 Women's World Championship:

A turning-point tournament where Eve and Aoi first meet.

Lead staff include director Takayuki Inagaki and screenwriter Yosuke Kuroda.

Their staff wanted someone adept at combining compelling action with memorable character writing.

The cast is a mix of rising young stars (Akari Kito as Eve, Asami Seto as Aoi) and anime veterans (Toru Furuya, Shuichi Ikeda).

Golf pro Toru Inoue provided detailed supervision so that the golf actions—no matter how fantastic—remained physics-believable.

Realistic sound effects and terminology were carefully included to appeal to golf fans.

Winks to classic anime and manga are everywhere, with direct references and homages, especially to “Pro Golfer Monkey” and “s-CRY-ed.”

There are also cameo nods to “Mobile Suit Gundam” and “Pac-Man.”

Opening Theme (both seasons): "Venus Line" performed by Kōmi Hirose.

Energetic and uplifting, its lyrics capture the anime’s stylish and competitive tone.

Season 1 Ending: "Yodaka" by Tsukuyomi; Season 2 Ending: "Kimi ga Iru kara" by Sarasa Kadowaki.

Both end themes focus on friendship and dreams.

There are also several insert songs, including "HONEY DAYS (GONE TOO SOON)" and "Take a chance."

BIRDIE WING has been called “the girls’ version of Pro Golfer Monkey” and “the s-CRY-ed of the Reiwa era” online for its action-packed, almost superheroic approach to sports anime.

Its blend of colorful, dynamic characters and incredibly over-the-top but internally consistent golf battles won over fans of both sports and character-driven stories.

Its original premise—girls dominating the world of golf with gusto, heart, and style—has attracted audiences from anime fans to those curious about golf itself.

The clever fusion of sports action, drama, and comedy has made BIRDIE WING a standout among new sports anime.

To celebrate the Blu-ray release, the series collaborated with the manga "2×2 = Shinobuden Plus," resulting in a fun crossover promotional comic.

The series actively engages on social media, with character art and behind-the-scenes features shared frequently.

BIRDIE WING continues to be loved for its bold creativity and passionate portrayal of golf.
