Nisekoi is a Japanese romantic comedy manga series created by Naoshi Komi. The story follows Raku Ichijo, the high school son of a yakuza leader, who must pretend to be in a relationship with Chitoge Kirisaki, the daughter of a rival gang boss, to prevent a gang war. As Raku juggles this fake romance, he becomes entangled with several girls, each holding a key to his childhood love and a mysterious promise. This school-set series is known for its classic rom-com tropes, colorful characters, and a whimsical puzzle surrounding a pendant and four different keys.

After the end of his previous series, Naoshi Komi was encouraged by his editor to try a romantic comedy, inspired by the positive response to his earlier one-shot "Koi no Kamisama".

Nisekoi first appeared as a one-shot in *Shonen Jump NEXT!* 2011 WINTER and quickly garnered attention for its blend of classic and fresh rom-com elements.

Extensive worldbuilding and character development led to its serialization in *Weekly Shonen Jump* from 2011 to 2016.

Komi initially considered a fantasy romance school setting before streamlining it into a more familiar high school backdrop with a twist on "fake lovers" drama.

Nisekoi is set in the fictional Bonyari City, a place with all the amenities of urban life, including large schools, parks, and a wide array of shops.

The main setting is Bonyari High School, where most of the characters study and interact.

Two key criminal organizations, the Shuei-gumi (yakuza) and the Beehive (American mafia), form the plot's backbone, with rivalries and alliances shaping much of the story’s drama.

Each main girl holds a mysterious key connected to a promise Raku made as a child, with the true identity of the promised girl at the heart of the story.

The narrative incorporates both classic romantic comedy elements and a “lock-and-key” mystery, woven through misunderstandings and heartwarming friendships.

Ten years before the present, Raku Ichijo, a young boy, makes a heartfelt promise with a mysterious girl: when they grow up, they will reunite and marry if she can open his pendant with her key.

Fast-forward to high school—Raku is forced by family circumstances to pretend to date the brash, beautiful Chitoge Kirisaki to prevent a gang war.

As they navigate this false relationship, Raku's heart wavers between Chitoge and his gentle classmate Kosaki Onodera, who also possesses a key and might be his promised girl.

Complications surge as Marika Tachibana, another keyholder and Raku’s self-proclaimed fiancée, enters the scene, determined to win him over.

The cast expands with Seishiro Tsugumi, a skilled hitwoman hiding her true gender and developing feelings for Raku, and Yui Kanakura, his childhood friend and yet another keyholder.

The series highlights daily school life, festive chaos, heartfelt confessions, and comedic misunderstandings, all while Raku seeks the girl from his childhood memory and juggles growing feelings for each heroine.

The conclusion resolves the mystery of the keys, reveals the truth of the childhood promise, and finally clarifies Raku's true love, offering closure and growth for the entire cast.

Pendant (Lock):

A locket Raku received ten years ago, which can only be opened by the matching key, representing his childhood promise.

Inside are two beaded rings and childhood letters, symbolizing the promise of eternal love.

Key:

Each girl possesses a uniquely decorated key. Only Kosaki Onodera's opens Raku’s lock, making her the “promised girl.”

Beehive:

An American mafia group led by Chitoge’s family, featuring a mix of Japanese and western characters.

Shuei-gumi:

The local yakuza group run by Raku’s father.

Bonyari High School:

The central high school where all main cast members study, known for its lively student body.

Promise Girl:

Refers to the childhood friend Raku promised to marry, the mystery which drives the main story.

Nisekoi's popularity led to a multifaceted media presence:

  • Television anime (two seasons produced by Shaft in 2014 and 2015) that adapted the manga’s early and middle arcs.
  • OVAs bundled with manga volumes.
  • Drama CDs, radio shows, and various character song albums.
  • A PlayStation Vita visual novel-style adventure game.
  • Multiple manga spin-offs, including the magical girl parody "Magical Patissier Kosaki-chan!!"
  • A live-action movie adaptation in 2018 starring Kento Nakajima and Ayami Nakajo, which brought key story elements to life.

Shaft’s adaptation, directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, is renowned for its visual flair—bold title cards, pop art references, expressive color choices, and inventive comedic timing.

The anime retained much of Komi’s comedic rhythm and character chemistry, giving each heroine unique charm through animation and voice acting.

Production focus was on translating the manga’s playful atmosphere and layered romantic confusion into a vibrant, energetic viewing experience.

Nisekoi’s anime featured memorable theme songs that became fan favorites:

  • “CLICK” and “STEP” by ClariS as energetic, catchy opening themes for Season 1.
  • “Rally Go Round” by LiSA as the Season 2 opening.
  • Various ending themes sung by cast members for each main heroine, spotlighting their personalities.

Nisekoi quickly became one of the longest-running romantic comedies in Weekly Shonen Jump history, surpassing the previous record of "Ichigo 100%".

By April 2018, the manga boasted over 12 million copies in circulation.

The original novels also charted highly among light novel rankings, reflecting the series’ broad appeal.

Nisekoi’s blend of school comedy, mafia drama, and heartfelt romance established it as a defining work for the modern shonen rom-com genre, influencing future series and gaining international fans through anime distribution and translations.

Nisekoi has inspired various collaborations with other popular manga, including crossover chapters and official art exchanges.

It has received multiple character and story popularity polls, with Kosaki Onodera, Chitoge Kirisaki, and Marika Tachibana remaining fan favorites.

Bonus manga, themed cafés, and a wide array of merchandise (from figures to posters) keep the fandom lively even after serialization.

The series’ magical girl parody, "Magical Patissier Kosaki-chan!!", developed such a cult following that it received its own manga and anime segment.

Nisekoi is a captivating blend of romance, comedy, and a bit of mystery—a nostalgic yet fresh take on high school love stories, celebrated for its memorable characters and laugh-out-loud moments.
