Log Horizon is a Japanese light novel series written by Mamare Touno.

The story follows Shiroe and many other players who are suddenly trapped in the fantasy MMORPG world Elder Tale after an expansion update.

With millions of players worldwide, Japan alone sees about 30,000 people transported into the game's universe.

Shiroe, a master strategist and former member of the legendary Debauchery Tea Party, must navigate a new reality filled with magic, monsters, and new rules.

He gathers friends like Naotsugu and Akatsuki, forming the guild Log Horizon to reclaim order and build a future in this unpredictable world.

Log Horizon debuted on the user-generated novel site Shousetsuka ni Narou in April 2010 as a practice in writing for print publication.

It was structured in a three-act format, with each volume covering nine chapters.

Game designer Shoji Masuda discovered the author’s earlier work, Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, and helped bring Log Horizon into print as a light novel series from Kadokawa starting in 2011.

The illustrator for the print series is Kazuhiro Hara.

Unlike many commercial series, the original draft remained free to read online, boosting fan engagement and creativity.

Elder Tale is the largest MMORPG in the world, with millions of players and extensive global servers.

After the "Novasphere Pioneers" expansion, players are pulled into its fantasy realm, where game rules now define reality.

Japan is represented as "Yamato Server," divided into five nation-states and numerous player cities modeled after real locations like Akihabara.

Players become 'Adventurers,' while non-player characters (NPCs) are now known as 'People of the Land' with rich backstories and personalities.

Magical systems, class combinations, and in-game politics shape the new society, where food, death, and technology work differently than expected.

Interaction between Adventurers and People of the Land, as well as the unique MMORPG mechanics, form the story’s core.

Shiroe and his group must collaborate to navigate a world where MMORPG systems and real-life emotions blend, exploring issues of order, community, and the search for a way home.

The story opens as Elder Tale's "Novasphere Pioneers" expansion traps players in-game, blurring the border between game and reality.

Shiroe, alarmed by the lawlessness and chaos in the city of Akiba, teams up with Naotsugu—the dependable friend—and Akatsuki—a small but deadly female Assassin.

After rescuing the stranded Serara and forming ties with several skilled friends, Shiroe establishes his own guild: Log Horizon.

The group works to end exploitation by powerful guilds, exposing the secret of tasty food and using economic strategies to restore order.

Shiroe brilliantly engineers the creation of the Round Table Conference, Akiba’s major self-governing organization, curbing crime and fostering collaboration.

The series unfolds with challenges like massive dungeon raids, political intrigue among major power factions, tense relations with the People of the Land, social festivals, and mysterious events.

Adventurers seek to uncover the truth about why they are trapped and how to return home, all while new danger—such as the enigmatic Genius monsters and world-shaking raids—threatens their fragile society.

The story features a growing ensemble, including budding leaders like Minori and Tohya, eccentric old-timers like Nyanta and Tetra, and rivals-turned-allies from distant cities.

Drama blends with comedic moments, romance, and high-stakes battle, showing how Shiroe and his allies find hope, self-worth, and purpose in a world they must now call home.

  • Elder Tale: The MMORPG that forms the series’ setting, now a real world for the trapped players.
  • Adventurers: Players who are now actual residents of the game world, retaining their classes and powers.
  • People of the Land: Former NPCs who have complex stories and agency, central to world politics.
  • Classes & Subclasses: Main combat roles (Guardian, Samurai, Assassin, etc.) and support professions (Cook, Tailor, Scribe, etc.) play a key role.
  • Round Table Conference: Akiba’s self-governing council consisting of guild leaders, mediating laws and order among Adventurers.
  • Genius/Phenomenon Monsters: New threats unique to the changed world, acting outside regular game logic and often serving as raid bosses.
  • World Fraction: The mysterious phenomenon causing the blending of Earth and Elder Tale.
  • Full Control Encounter: Shiroe’s unique, high-level battle strategy where he calculates MP consumption and actions for all raid members, allowing complex tactics.

Light Novels

The main series is published by Kadokawa and includes 11 volumes as of 2018.

Spinoffs such as Log Horizon Gaiden: Honey Moon Logs, Western Wind Brigade, and Nyanta's Happy Recipe expand the world through side characters’ perspectives.

Manga

Multiple manga spin-offs explore different guilds and character viewpoints, notably Western Wind Brigade starring Soujirou Seta, and the comedic Nyanta’s Happy Recipe.

Anime

The anime adaptation aired three seasons: the first in 2013–2014 (25 episodes), the second in 2014–2015 (25 episodes), and the third, "Log Horizon: Destruction of the Round Table," in 2021.

Produced by various studios and aired on NHK Educational TV, the adaptation faithfully follows the novels and is praised for its thoughtful exploration of MMORPG culture.

Audio Drama & Drama CDs

Various drama CDs have been packaged with special editions and home video releases, featuring the same cast as the anime.

Tabletop RPG

Log Horizon TRPG allows fans to roleplay as Adventurers in the Elder Tale world, designed with the input of the author to encourage collaborative storytelling.

Games

A browser/SNS game, "Log Horizon: New Adventure Land," was released on GREEin 2015.

A mobile escape game app appeared in late 2020, though both have ended service.

Mamare Touno started the story as an exercise in novel writing, inspired by game mechanics, player psychology, and the sociology of online communities.

Game designer Shoji Masuda provided substantial support, acting as both promoter and monitor, bridging fanfiction culture and professional publication.

Log Horizon ranked fourth in the "Best Web Novels" category in Takarajimasha’s This Web Novel is Amazing! guidebook in 2015.

By 2015, cumulative print sales had surpassed 1.6 million copies.

Log Horizon stands out for its authentic portrayal of gaming cultures and social structures, focusing on economic, political, and interpersonal aspects rather than only action or combat.

It is widely appreciated for its strategic thinking, layered characters, and respectful look at both leadership and community.

The anime and novels have inspired a loyal global fanbase, extensive fanfiction, and positive comparisons with similar isekai and game-based series.

Fan creations, including novels and new characters, have been welcomed and even referenced in the main work.

Notably, the side story featuring Kushi Yatama, a fan-originated character, was published officially.

The world’s detailed setting led to the release of official TRPG supplements, guides, and various merchandise, further enriching the universe of Log Horizon.
