My Wife Has No Emotion is a Japanese manga series by Jiro Sugiura that follows the daily lives of a human man, Takuma Kosugi, and his robotic wife, Mina. The story masterfully blends heartfelt moments with gentle humor as it explores their unconventional yet warm relationship. Serialized in Monthly Comic Flapper since 2019, it has also been shared in doodle form by the author on social media. The manga was ranked 6th in the 2022 “Next Manga Awards” for its unique take on human-robot relationships. A TV anime adaptation produced by Tezuka Productions aired from July to September 2024.
Author Jiro Sugiura focuses on a touching yet quirky depiction of daily life between a human and a robot in a society where intelligent home robots are widespread. The manga began serialization in 2019 on Comic Flapper and gained popularity through its accessible content on platforms like Pixiv and X (formerly Twitter).
The story is set in a near-future Japan where humanoid robots have become common household companions. Robots such as the Mina series are developed for various tasks, including housework, childcare, and companionship. Society is adapting to the integration of robots, with some countries even legalizing human-robot marriage. There are also systems in place, such as "partner registration," that allow robots to be treated as respected family members rather than mere machines. Robot authorization is classified from Class 0 to 3, depending on their social cooperation skills.
Takuma Kosugi is an overworked office worker living alone who struggles to keep up with chores. He buys Mina, an affordable household robot, to help. On a drunken night, Takuma jokingly asks Mina to “be his wife.” Surprisingly, Mina takes this to heart and, despite having no facial expressions or emotions, strives to fulfill this “wife” role as best as she can.
Takuma initially sees Mina as just another appliance, but her sincere efforts and endearing quirks gradually win him over. Their life together includes learning the nuances of human-robot relationships, family acceptance, and challenges from society, including discrimination against robots.
New characters join the mix: Mamoru, a tiny health-monitoring robot considered the couple's “child” after it develops sentience; Super Mina, an advanced friend robot; and Akari Kosugi, Takuma’s supportive (and highly curious) younger sister, among others. Together, they face heartwarming dilemmas about identity, belonging, and what family truly means—regardless of whether you’re made of flesh or metal.
- Mina Series: Housework-specialized robots, with various models tailored for different tasks. The CL type, which Takuma owns, is designed for cooking and dishwashing.
- Super Mina: The premium Mina model, capable of various tasks and designed to behave indistinguishably from humans.
- Mamoru: Miniature robot for health management. Originally remotely operated by Mina but begins to act independently and learns like a child.
- Partner Registration: Allows owners to formally recognize their robots as family, granting privacy rights and social recognition for the robot.
- Robot Classes: Determined by cooperation and situation-judgment abilities, ranging from Class 0 to 3. This affects robots’ permissions in society.
- RoboPay: A payment system exclusive to robots, which can be locked so only robots use it.
- Report Server: An information-sharing system for Mina robots, allowing them to exchange experiences and solutions to problems online, which cannot be disclosed to humans for privacy reasons.
