Classroom for Heroes is a Japanese light novel series written by Shin Araki and illustrated by Haruyuki Morisawa.

Since 2015, it has been published by Shueisha under the Dash X Bunko label.

The story delivers a comedic yet heartfelt battle-fantasy set in a school for training future heroes, where a former legendary hero named Blade tries living an ordinary school life for the first time.

The series has inspired multiple manga adaptations, spin-offs, and a TV anime aired in 2023.

By July 2023, total volumes in circulation surpassed 1.7 million.

Classroom for Heroes was created by author Shin Araki, known for crafting lively, character-driven fantasy worlds.

The original aim was to explore what happens when the "ultimate hero" wishes for normalcy after saving the world.

Illustrator Haruyuki Morisawa gave visual life to both the action-packed and slice-of-life elements.

The project quickly expanded as publishers saw the story’s strong appeal for both fantasy fans and readers looking for laughter in a school setting.

The series is set in Rosewood Academy, a prestigious school located in the Royal Academy City.

Here, individuals with extraordinary talents from noble families, magical bloodlines, or unique backgrounds gather to be trained as next-generation heroes.

The world is recovering from a disastrous war with the Demon King, and peace is fragile.

Humans, dragons, artificial beings, and even computers coexist in a fascinating blend of fantasy and sci-fi elements.

Blade, once hailed as the legendary hero who fought and defeated the Demon King, suffered lasting injuries in the final battle.

Now having lost most of his powers, Blade dreams of living as a regular student.

Through the arrangement of the mischievous King (Gilgamesh Soulmaker), Blade enrolls at Rosewood Academy concealing his former identity.

Despite his efforts, Blade’s overwhelming abilities and naivety toward normal life draw the eyes of classmates and teachers alike.

Students begin calling him "Superorganism" because he’s just too strong, even when holding back.

Throughout his school days, Blade encounters fiery rivals, silent geniuses like Sophie, a dragon child named Cú Chulainn, and many more.

With each new friend (or challenger!), Blade’s dream of an "ordinary" youth turns into a hilarious adventure with heartwarming moments.

  • Hero: A chosen individual blessed with unmatched powers, historically tasked with defeating evil.
  • Artificial Hero (like Sophie): A being created in labs to mimic the original hero's power.
  • Superorganism: The nickname for Blade, indicating someone with extraordinary abilities beyond human scope.
  • Rosewood Academy: The central school for nurturing future heroes, filled with competitive and eccentric students.
  • King: The sovereign and academy headmaster, notorious for instigating chaos among students for entertainment.

Classroom for Heroes started as a light novel series in 2015 and now includes:

  • Main light novels (15 volumes as of Dec 2023)
  • Main manga adaptation by Koara Kishida, serialized since 2016 (21 volumes as of May 2025, Square Enix)
  • Spin-off manga: "Classroom for Heroes - Girls Mission" by Shion Mitsuki (2 volumes, 2017-2019)
  • Comedy spin-off: "High Spec Iona" featuring the library guardian Iona (2 volumes, 2018-2020)
  • Special manga one-shot "Classroom for Heroes — Empress of Flames" (1 volume, 2015)

An anime adaptation was first teased in 2021 and aired from July to September 2023, totaling 12 episodes.

Produced by Actas, directed by Keiichiro Kawaguchi with series composition from Naoki Hayashi, the anime adapted major arcs from the original novels and included three OVAs in the Blu-ray releases.

The production embraced a lively, colorful art style with energetic animation to match the series’ tone.

The opening theme, "Bravery? Naturally?", is performed by Kaede Higuchi, blending pop energy with lyrics about youth and courage.

The ending theme, "Another Self," is sung by Akane Kumada, reflecting on the characters’ growth and friendship.

Each Blu-ray volume features a unique OVA, with character songs and additional insert tracks.

Classroom for Heroes continues to enjoy strong popularity in both print and anime form.

By mid-2023, over 1.7 million copies had been published.

The manga in Monthly Shonen Gangan is celebrated for its comedic timing and vibrant cast.

The anime’s energetic adaptation drew new fans, making the series a staple for those who love action-comedy and school fantasy stories.

  • Multiple voice actors brought the colorful cast to life, with Reiji Kawashima starring as Blade in the anime.
  • The series is actively being adapted, with ongoing manga volumes and continual growth in its fanbase.
  • Despite the fantasy elements, Classroom for Heroes is often praised for its heartwarming friendships and playful approach to the hero genre.
