LOOK BACK is a Japanese manga one-shot by Tatsuki Fujimoto, published digitally on Shueisha's *Shōnen Jump+* platform on July 19, 2021.

Spanning 143 pages, it weaves a human drama with elements of coming-of-age, horror, and thriller into a deeply moving story about two young girls connected by their love of drawing manga.

The work received overwhelming praise upon release, quickly dominating social media trends and surpassing millions of views within its first days online.

A collected volume was released on September 3, 2021, and the series went on to win top honors including the first place in the *Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2022* ranking for male readers.

The Meeting

In elementary school, fourth-grader Ayumu Fujino enjoys popularity for her four-panel manga published in the school newspaper.

Her confidence is shaken when her teacher asks her to share the space with reclusive classmate Kyomoto, who never attends school but possesses astonishing artistic talent that instantly outshines Fujino's work.

Driven by jealousy and determination, Fujino immerses herself obsessively in improving her drawing skills, sacrificing friendships and straining family relationships in the process.

Despite years of relentless effort, she still cannot match Kyomoto's ability and eventually abandons drawing altogether on the verge of graduation.

A Fateful Partnership

On graduation day, Fujino is asked to deliver Kyomoto's diploma and finally meets the shut-in girl face-to-face, only to discover that Kyomoto is actually her biggest fan.

Their encounter reignites Fujino's passion, and the two begin collaborating under the pen name "Fujino Kyō" — Fujino writing the stories while Kyomoto brings them to life with her stunning artwork.

By age 13, their submitted work earns an honorable mention in a manga competition.

They publish seven one-shot stories by age 17, building a promising amateur career together.

Diverging Paths

As high school ends, their paths split when Kyomoto decides to enroll in an art university while Fujino turns professional, starting her own serialized manga.

Fujino's solo career flourishes — her series reaches 11 volumes and even gets an anime adaptation.

Then, breaking news shatters everything.

A World Rewritten

On January 10, 2016, a mentally unstable intruder attacks Kyomoto's art university, killing 12 students — with Kyomoto as the first victim.

Consumed by guilt, Fujino agonizes over whether bringing Kyomoto out of her sheltered world led directly to her death.

At this moment, the narrative splits into two parallel realities — one where Kyomoto dies, and another where a version of Fujino who quit drawing as a child rushes to rescue a Kyomoto she never met, saving her from the tragedy and rediscovering the joy of creating manga herself.

The story returns to the original timeline, closing on the image of Fujino's back as she continues to draw.

The story unfolds primarily in Nikaho City, Akita Prefecture — Fujimoto's own hometown — featuring real local landmarks recognizable to residents.

The art university Kyomoto attends is modeled after Tohoku University of Art & Design in Yamagata City, where Fujimoto himself once studied, adding a layer of autobiographical resonance to the fictional drama.

Industry figures and fellow artists responded with effusive admiration — mangaka like Jun Watanabe and Sumito Ōwara praised its emotional depth, while director Shin'ichirō Ueda and musician Shunto Furuga also expressed profound appreciation.

The work earned the Special Committee Award at the 2021 Twitter Trend Awards and topped the *Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2022* ranking, making Fujimoto the first creator to win in consecutive years following the success of *Chainsaw Man*.

Critics and readers have noted layered allusions throughout *LOOK BACK* — the title itself, combined with an early page's "Don't", forms Oasis's song title *Don't Look Back in Anger*.

A Blu-ray resembling *Once Upon a Time in Hollywood* appears in the final pages, mirroring that film's alternate-history prevention of the Sharon Tate murder.

Parallels have also been drawn to films like *La La Land*, *Interstellar*, and *The Butterfly Effect*, as well as the 2021 Japanese drama *Omameda Towako and Her Three Ex-Husbands*, revealing a dense web of cinematic and narrative homage that enriches the reading experience.

Some readers raised concerns about the portrayal of the attacker, noting that the depiction appeared to reinforce harmful stereotypes about schizophrenia and mental illness.

Psychiatrist Tamaki Saitō, while calling the work a rare masterpiece, warned that such representations risk cementing public misconceptions about people with psychiatric conditions.

On August 2, 2021, the *Shōnen Jump+* editorial department announced revisions to certain lines and text elements in the perpetrator's scenes to avoid perpetuating discrimination, sparking further debate among readers about creative freedom versus social responsibility.

A theatrical anime adaptation directed, written, and character-designed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama was released in Japan on June 28, 2024, with animation produced by Studio Durian.

The 58-minute film features Yuumi Kawai as Fujino and Mizuki Yoshida as Kyomoto, with music by haruka nakamura and the theme song *"Light song"* performed by urara.

Amazon MGM Studios participated in the production committee, marking its first involvement in a Japanese anime project.

The film later received Dolby Atmos and Dolby Cinema screenings, and Amazon Prime Video began worldwide exclusive streaming on November 8, 2024.

Accolades

The anime received widespread recognition, including:

Japan Academy Film Prize: Won Best Animation of the Year and the Creative Contribution Award for the key animation staff.

Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2025: Won Best Film in the theatrical category and Best Director for Kiyotaka Oshiyama.

Hochi Film Award: Won Best Animated Feature.

Niigata International Animation Film Festival: Won the Grand Prize in the feature competition and the Fukiya Kōji Award.

A live-action film adaptation was announced on December 3, 2025, with Hirokazu Kore-eda serving as director, screenwriter, and editor — the first time a Tatsuki Fujimoto work receives a live-action treatment.

Filming took place primarily in Nikaho City, Akita Prefecture, and the film is set for theatrical release in 2026 across Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.
