Easygoing Territory Defense by the Optimistic Lord is a Japanese high-fantasy light novel series by Akamune Akaike, later adapted into a manga and a television anime about a “banished” noble boy who turns a nameless frontier village into a fortress city using production-type magic.
The story began serialization on the user-generated fiction website Let’s Become a Novelist on May 15, 2020.
The print edition has been published by Overlap under the Overlap Novels imprint since September 25, 2021, with illustrations by Ten.
A manga adaptation, drawn by Maro Aoiro, has been serialized on Comic Gardo since August 13, 2021.
A television anime adaptation produced by NAZ premiered in January 2026 and airs on TOKYO MX and other networks.
Van Ney Fertio is the fourth son of the Marquis House of Fertio and was celebrated as a prodigy in childhood.
At age eight, a magical aptitude test declares him unfit for the magic expected of nobles—offensive elemental magic or healing magic.
Instead, Van is judged to have aptitude for “production” magic, widely dismissed as the weakest and least useful category.
His father exiles him in practice by appointing him “lord” of a remote, impoverished, unnamed village and ordering him to relocate there.
Behind the humiliation is a darker intent: the father initially considered killing Van or forcing him into slavery.
Only the intervention of the eldest son, Murusia, turns it into a de facto commutation—banishment via a nominal lordship.
Van’s secret is that he is a reincarnated person from modern Japan.
With huge innate magical power and practical modern knowledge, he uses production magic to create tools, weapons, and infrastructure that rapidly modernize the village.
Bandits and monsters soon test the settlement, but Van repels them with equipment he produces himself.
As his results pile up, the world around him starts re-evaluating production magic, and Van’s status rises as his territory grows into a fortress city.
Main group
Van Ney Fertio (voiced by Yumi Uchiyama).
The protagonist, a noble boy with production magic, who leverages vast mana and modern scientific thinking to build and defend his territory.
Van is sent away at age eight as an “easy solution” to an inconvenient child.
He turns the exile into an opportunity, improving roads, housing, water systems, and defenses with relentless creativity.
Till (voiced by M.A.O).
Van’s dedicated personal maid, who accompanies him to the frontier and supports the daily running of his household.
Khamsin (voiced by Mariya Ise).
A slave Van buys on impulse when visiting a merchant company, later becoming a trusted bodyguard with strong swordsmanship talent.
Esparda (voiced by Kenzou Horiuchi).
Former head butler of the Marquis House of Fertio who trained Van from early childhood and resigns to accompany him as a guardian and advisor.
Esparda excels particularly in earth-element magic.
In the village, he often leads civil engineering and construction work.
Dee (voiced by Chikahiro Kobayashi).
A master swordsman who served as vice-captain of the Fertio knight order and taught swordsmanship to Van and Khamsin.
Dee joins the journey under the pretext of providing security.
In practice, he becomes part of Van’s expanding “frontier team” as threats escalate.
Allies and visitors
Ortho Sheet (voiced by Makoto Furukawa).
Leader of an adventurer group hired to protect the road to the village, who becomes fascinated by Van’s unconventional leadership and stays on.
Purriel (voiced by Wakana Kuramochi).
An adventurer in Ortho’s party with aptitude for water-element magic, contributing utility and combat support.
Xara (voiced by Gen Sato).
Another member of Ortho’s party who primarily acts as the scout, handling reconnaissance and field movement.
Panamera Karla Kaien (voiced by Yoko Hikasa).
A knight serving Count Ferdinandat who also holds a viscount title, accompanying a noble envoy and becoming personally interested in Van’s territory.
Panamera arrives to escort Arut Ann Ferdinand.
She later remains in the village alongside Arut, observing Van’s rise firsthand.
Arut Ann Ferdinand (voiced by Shion Wakayama).
Youngest daughter of Count Ferdinandat, whose aptitude for puppet-type magic causes her to be treated as disposable by her own family.
Hearing that Van, another “discarded” noble child, has been sent to the frontier, she is dispatched with the intention of making him her fiancé.
Her arrival adds political tension as well as a personal bond with Van’s growing settlement.
Lada Priora (voiced by Nonoka Obuchi).
Daughter of the chieftain of the Apkarlu, a merfolk-like people, who quietly takes up residence in a reservoir created by Van and Esparda.
Lada boldly calls herself Van’s fiancée.
Van and his companions do not officially recognize the claim, but her presence adds comedy and cultural intrigue.
