Divine Gate is a Japanese fantasy mobile role‑playing game and media franchise created by GungHo Online Entertainment, later adapted into a television anime directed by Noriyuki Abe.
It mixes panel‑based puzzle battles with a densely layered multi‑world storyline about gods, dragons, humans, and “doors” that can rewrite reality.
Divine Gate was released as a free‑to‑play panel RPG for Android on September 30, 2013 and for iOS on October 10, 2013.
The game reached over 4.5 million downloads and ended service on December 11, 2018.
The early version of the game was developed by Acquire and published by GungHo Online Entertainment.
With a major update on September 26, 2017, it was reborn as Divine Gate Zero, with development moved in‑house at GungHo.
From January to March 2016, a 12‑episode television anime adaptation produced by Studio Pierrot aired in Japan.
The franchise also spawned art books, a novel, radio shows, and many crossover events with other anime and games.
Visually, the series is known for high‑contrast, “manga‑meets‑anime” character art.
Characters are posed center‑screen with flashy effects exploding around them, emphasizing style as much as combat.
More than 1,500 units (characters) exist in the game, each with an individual profile text.
Reading those short stories and area descriptions gradually reveals the full, sprawling meta‑plot.
Quest and Battle
The core gameplay revolves around clearing “Quests” on a 5×5 board of hidden panels.
You flip panels to move toward an exit door, collecting keys and dealing with enemies, traps, and rare “guerrilla bosses” along the way.
You form a party of four units plus one friend unit, then fight a quest boss behind the door to clear the stage.
Success depends on puzzle planning, team synergy, and reading enemy patterns.
Combat uses Energy Panels: seven panel types are placed into five slots each turn.
The combination of panels you choose determines which attacks and skills your units trigger.
Every unit has its own panel compatibility, so building a team whose patterns match your panel playstyle is crucial.
The puzzle element is about making the most efficient chains and color combinations in a few seconds.
Each unit has an element (Fire, Water, Wind, Light, Dark, or Void) and a race (Human, Dragon, God, Demon, Fairy, Beast, Machine).
Some units have a secondary race, allowing deep synergy builds where passive skills and boosts stack in creative ways.
With over 1,000 units, team compositions are virtually limitless.
The fun comes from experimenting until you find a party that feels uniquely yours.
Rebirth Evolution
“Rebirth Evolution” is a high‑end evolution system introduced in late 2014.
Using a special unit type called Holy Stones as material, units can evolve up to the top rarity of 7 stars.
Holy Stones appear in the special dungeon “Lostros Holy Stone Palace,” which is available on Sundays.
Only players above a certain rank can attempt this dungeon, so it functions as late‑game progression.
Link System
The Link System, added on December 10, 2015, lets you “link” one unit (B) to another unit (A) to power it up.
Linking boosts HP and attack, and also gives a chance for one of unit B’s skills to activate when unit A acts.
After the link is formed, clearing quests raises a bond level between A and B.
The higher the bond, the higher the chance that B’s skill will trigger in battle.
Units also have Link Passive skills that activate just by being linked.
These add special effects to quests, such as extra drops, stat buffs, or defensive perks.
Linking costs multiple units and coins, and even removing a link consumes coins and resets the bond to zero.
You cannot use the linked unit B on its own, evolve it, sell it separately, or use it as fusion fodder until the link is broken.
The cost for high‑rarity bases can exceed a million coins, so links must be chosen carefully.
Because race, element, and Link Passive traits all alter the outcome, even the same base unit can feel radically different depending on its link partner.
Divine Gate’s narrative is told in “chapters,” spread across quests, profiles, and event stories.
It is dense, multi‑layered, and filled with conspiracies, gods, and moral gray areas.
Chapter 1: “Judgment of Twilight”
A sacred gateway called the Divine Gate suddenly opens.
Its influence fuses three separate realms—the Normal World, the Heavenly World, and the Demonic World—into a single United World.
Six teenagers, each bound to an elemental attribute, begin a journey toward the Divine Gate.
Some seek to stop the unification, others hope to find what they have lost, and all carry painful secrets.
At the same time, the World Council forms to stabilize the chaos.
Within it, the Holy King ARTHUR and his special unit Knights of the Round secretly move to reach the gate as well.
Chapter 2: “Perfect Sunset / Golden Dawn”
The gate’s god is sealed in the gap of time, and the United World is temporarily saved.
But the trickster god LOKI arranges for AKANE, AOTO, and MIDORI to be framed as criminals who opened the forbidden door.
The trio scatter and go into hiding.
Meanwhile GINJI is hailed as a hero and made a top executive of the restructured World Council, losing his freedom under the weight of politics.
HIKARI, who did not fight at the gate, becomes queen of the Heavenly World.
YUKARI reigns over the Demonic World and, driven by hatred of the god who killed her best friend and the angels who supported that god, declares war on heaven.
Tension explodes when YUKARI formally declares war during a World Council meeting.
As heaven and hell inch toward war, massive disasters strike the United World, orchestrated in the shadows by the Grimoire Cult, which seeks a “Perfect World.”
Chapter 3: “Great ‘Hope’ = ‘Despair’”
Inside the Grimoire Cult, internal conflicts lead to chaotic large‑scale battles.
AOTO, MIDORI, and the Knights of the Round destroy much of the cult, but cannot capture its true leader MEIZARTH.
MEIZARTH, empowered by the ancient dragon king NOAH, escapes unharmed.
The heroes also fail to locate the legendary Scabbard, an artifact that can restore a fallen king.
Elsewhere, AKANE and REOLA move to rescue ARTHUR.
They infiltrate the royal capital Tintagel with many allies, including Elisabeth and Merlin, but the “king” they find is not the one they hoped for.
Chapter 4: “Holy War”
Evacuation alarms echo through the Heavenly World, but many citizens never receive them.
Entire border towns vanish in sudden destruction.
The Holy War begins when six demon queens march their armies from hell into heaven.
YUKARI takes the field as Dark Witch Queen, driven by her hatred for the god who stole her friend and the fairies who supported that god.
HIKARI, now free from divine control, wants to lead the fairies into a truly happy world.
The two queens’ wishes clash on the battlefield, along with old scars from a previous “Holy War.”
Behind the conflict, old grudges, divine schemes, and hidden players twist events further.
As battle rages, the confrontation between the two queens merges with the fate of two kings cast out of the world.
Chapter 5: “False King”
After the Holy War ends, the United World slowly regains peace.
Suddenly, six calamities assault the Normal World.
These disasters are part of the “Decision of the World,” issued by ARTHUR after abandoning his humanity and becoming a god.
The north European gods carry out his will, and people everywhere tremble before divine terror.
The Knights of the Round, the modified warfare group Numbers, the “sinners,” queens of heaven and hell, and their generals resist as best they can.
But the ones who truly repel the gods are four nameless beings and the mysterious boy who commands them.
Chapter 6: “Decision of the World”
The new worldly king CROWLEY announces a shocking decree: “To save the world from the Divine Gate, ARTHUR must be executed.”
All factions are stunned, including the Knights of the Round who once served ARTHUR.
In the week before the invasion of the God Realm, many Knights desert the World Council to defend their former king.
The six Holy Saints who control the council begin their own secret moves.
One week later, CROWLEY leads a multilateral invasion of the God Realm.
Waiting for them are not only the Knights of the Round but also other, more enigmatic forces tied to the Divine Gate itself.
Chapter 7: “Beyond the Door”
As World Decider, the now‑divine ARTHUR renders a final judgment.
He sends the six protagonists—AKANE, AOTO, MIDORI, HIKARI, YUKARI, and GINJI—into a golden light.
They awaken in a peaceful world created by ARTHUR, where each can be happy.
This “happy ending” is his act of kindness, freeing them from duty and pain.
Yet the six reject this gentle lie.
They choose the uncertain, painful “Now” over a perfect illusion, deciding to live in the real world.
Meanwhile in the United World, those who follow the Decider and the reformed Grimoire Cult interpret the “Decision of the World” as a command to end reality.
They invade to erase the world, opposed by people who still cling to the present.
After returning from the happy world, the six heroes entrust defense of the United World to their allies.
They head for the God Realm to confront ARTHUR and claim their right to live in the present.
Worlds
United World (Unitaria)
The fused domain born when the Divine Gate opened, mixing the Normal, Heavenly, and Demonic Worlds, and later the Dragon World.
The World Council rules it, striving to make it “normal” again.
Normal World (Terrastia)
The realm where humans primarily live.
At the start of the story, ARTHUR represents this world within the World Council.
Heavenly World (Celestia)
The realm of fairies, ruled by a Fairy King.
Former rulers include OBERON and then TITANIA, followed by HIKARI as Light Fairy Queen.
The “original” Fairy King is revealed to be NICHOLAS, who once rebelled against the gods and failed.
After his failure, subsequent fairy kings such as OBERON and TITANIA are “written existences,” artificially created rulers.
Demonic World (Helistia)
The realm of demons and monsters.
Initially ruled by child queen WALPURGIS, whose power is controlled from the shadows by illusionist FATIMA.
Former Demon King VLAD once ruled, and later YUKARI becomes Dark Witch Queen.
The Demonic World fields the Six Color Queens and the Six Demon Generals.
Dragon World (Dragutia)
The realm of dragons, ruled by a Dragon King and structured with court dragons, gatekeepers, and musical dragons.
NOAH is king at the story’s start, later replaced by VERN, the Crimson Emperor.
God Realm (Ragnatia)
The upper world where gods dwell, including LOKI and the north European gods.
Its inner workings remain mostly hidden, but it sits above and manipulates the other realms.
Factions and Organizations
World Council
Formed to stabilize and “normalize” the United World after the Divine Gate’s opening.
Representatives from each realm sit as councilors, but above them stand the top executives and the six Holy Saints, who truly control the organization.
Grimoire Cult
A religious group dedicated to creating a “Perfect World.”
Its symbol is an all‑seeing eye, representing everyone striving together for perfection.
On the surface, CROWLEY is the cult’s childlike “god‑queen” leader.
Behind her, though, lurk the true founder MEIZARTH and sub‑leaders like the Four Demon Kings and the wave‑controlling elite Six Phrases.
Knights of the Round
ARTHUR’s personal special unit within the World Council.
Its 12 members are elite “Holy Gunners” with codenames drawn from Arthurian legend.
Six Saints
The six higher beings who sit even above the World Council’s top executives.
They include DANTE, JOHAN, AEGIS, JEANNE, SHION, and NICHOLAS, each with their own domain and secret agenda.
Dragon Royal Retainers (Ancient Dragon Corps)
The inner circle serving Dragon King NOAH.
They include several “civilization dragons” who act as commanders and tacticians.
Special Dragon Force (SDF)
A secret World Council strike force assembled to counter ancient dragons.
Its members are specialized dragons and dragon hybrids, each themed around a different emotion.
Numbers and Lost Numbers
The Numbers are human boys and girls forcibly enhanced by the “Divine Genius.”
Each bears a “Code” Driver and a number in German; their evolved versions are the Lost Numbers with altered designations.
Species and Transformations
Driver
The catch‑all term for weapons and devices that characters wield.
Drivers can be swords, guns, scythes, armor, artificial limbs, or even entire sentient bodies.
Mixed Species (Next)
Beings born with the traits of two races from the start.
HIKARI, born of human and fairy, and YUKARI, born of human and demon, are prime examples.
Second Species (Second)
Beings whose race is altered after birth by experiment or magic.
Some retain traits of their original race, while others are completely overwritten.
For example, VLAD was originally a demon but gained dragon blood from VERN, becoming a demon‑dragon Second.
FERNO began as a human, was transformed by the Grimoire Cult into a human‑dragon Second, and eventually became purely dragon.
Historic Events
Previous Holy War
An earlier conflict between heaven and hell.
Publicly, it began when heaven suddenly attacked hell, forcing demons to respond.
In truth it was orchestrated by the God Realm to crush a rebellion led by VLAD and others against the gods’ tiered, oppressive world order.
OBERON and VLAD, once close friends, were forced to fight; OBERON’s victory over VLAD sealed heaven’s official win and scarred both him and HISUI.
God‑Dragon War
An ancient rivalry between dragons and gods.
Originally an honorable contest between equals, it became one‑sided when one dragon betrayed the Dragon World to become a god, tipping the balance and allowing the gods to win.
Blue Christmas
A massacre in which 666 people died in a single night.
The only survivor was a bound beast girl named RURI.
BRUNO‑ASUL lost his father in the event and spent years hunting AOTO, believing him to be the killer.
The truth, however, is that the real murderer was AOTO’s twin brother ARITON (who used the name AOTO), aided by the “Divine Genius” SCHRODINGER, who fell in “first love” with him.
Following the trail, ARTHUR’s friend SANTA CLAUSE uncovered the hidden truth and found the “Key,” confidential information the World Council had suppressed.
He entrusted this Key to ARTHUR, a choice that would shape the fate of the United World.
God‑Dragon War, Holy Wars, and the Divine Gate
Interlocked wars and divine schemes all spiral around the Divine Gate.
The gate promises change, but every attempt to use it drags the world deeper into cycles of judgment and reset.
Artifacts
Scabbard
The sheath of the holy sword Caliburnus.
Said to possess the power of “universal restoration,” it can restore Evil ARTHUR to sanity.
The Knights of the Round search obsessively for this Scabbard as the one hope to save their fallen king.
Holy Sword Caliburnus
Originally held by lake fairy VIVIAN, later entrusted to LANCELOT (LYLE).
It symbolizes rightful kingship and carries deep ties to the fairy and dragon realms.
The Six Protagonists
Each of the six leads corresponds to one of the game’s six elements.
They’re flawed, traumatized teenagers who grow by confronting their pasts.
AKANE – Fire Protagonist
AKANE is 16, talented at housework, and wields the gauntlet‑type Driver “Ignite.”
He lost his scientist father in an “accident” but refuses to believe he is dead.
Driven by his father’s dream to use the Divine Gate to change the world, AKANE sets off toward the gate.
He loves chilled tomatoes and hates fermented beans.
AOTO – Water Protagonist
AOTO, age 16, wields the katana‑type Driver “Wadatsumi.”
He is emotionally distant, pushing people away and choosing solitude.
He is rumored to have murdered his parents and is widely known as “AOTO the Parent‑Killer.”
In truth his real name is AOI, and it was his twin brother ARITON who committed the crime; AOI took his brother’s name and the guilt to atone.
He likes mackerel sushi, dislikes warm food, and his “talent” is driving people away.
MIDORI – Wind Protagonist
MIDORI is 16, energetic, and straightforward, a track star wielding the staff‑type Driver “Fengshen.”
Her pure honesty sometimes hurts others without her realizing it.
She set off for the Divine Gate because she never managed to make up with a dear friend after a fight.
Her favorite food is cucumber, and she despises celery.
HIKARI – Light Protagonist
HIKARI is 16, cheerful, and always smiling to keep the mood bright.
She wields the sword‑type Driver “Lumiere” and is secretly a human‑fairy mix.
Raised by foster parents from infancy, she travels to uncover the truth about her birth.
She loves oranges and hates extremely spicy food.
YUKARI – Dark Protagonist
YUKARI is 16, quiet, and loves the night.
She wields the scythe‑type Driver “Abyss” and is a human‑demon hybrid.
Her childhood memories are mostly gone, but fragments of a world shrouded in darkness drive her to approach the Divine Gate.
She likes pickled eggplant and hates mayonnaise.
GINJI – Void Protagonist
GINJI is 16 and seemingly apathetic, spending his days without purpose.
He wields the axe‑type Driver “Yashahime.”
While chasing the Divine Gate, he gradually discovers something worth living for.
He has no stated favorite or hated foods, fitting his minimalist personality.
The Six Great Elemental Spirits
These six elemental spirits act as guardians and partners for the protagonists.
Each embodies the origin of its element.
Ifrit – Great Fire Spirit
Ifrit is the origin of fire and a powerful fairy with an old‑fashioned demeanor.
She usually travels with AKANE and can identify spices by smell.
She loves spicy curry and hates sweet curry.
Undine – Great Water Spirit
Undine is the origin of water and a gentle fairy who pairs with AOTO.
She constantly worries about AOTO, who refuses to open his heart.
She likes water‑based sweets and dislikes fatty foods.
Sylph – Great Wind Spirit
Sylph, the origin of wind, acts as MIDORI’s partner.
She is bright and talks with a quirky “~aru” verbal tic.
She loves mooncakes and hates bitter herbal medicines.
Will‑o‑Wisp – Great Light Spirit
Will‑o‑Wisp is the origin of light and even an idol celebrity in heaven.
She becomes HIKARI’s guardian spirit and dies protecting her in battle against Odin.
Even after death, her power remains as a protective force around HIKARI.
Shadow – Great Dark Spirit
Shadow is the origin of darkness and the first fairy to fall into the Demonic World.
He accompanies YUKARI and later becomes her guardian spirit, greatly amplifying her power.
Zero – Great Void Spirit
Zero is the origin of nothingness and a fairy tormented by the vagueness of its own purpose.
It travels with GINJI, whose own “emptiness” mirrors Zero’s existential doubts.
ARTHUR and the Knights of the Round
ARTHUR (real name: Altrius)
ARTHUR is the World Council representative for the Normal World and leader of the Knights of the Round.
He wields the gunblade‑type Driver “Excalibur” and dreams of restoring the separate worlds by using the Divine Gate.
While other councilors fear and avoid the gate, ARTHUR works in secret to reach it and “undo” the unification.
He is calm, charismatic, and deeply burdened by the weight of kingship.
He loves mince pies and claims to dislike no food.
Below are brief portraits of his 12 Knights (all of them humans wielding customized Drivers):
BEDIVERE (REOLA) – A serious, earnest swordswoman wielding a variable gunblade “Bedwil.”
She idolizes ARTHUR, who recruited her after she was rejected by the Council Guard for being too single‑minded.
YVAIN (ROA) – A laid‑back scythe‑gun user who once accidentally killed his best friend on duty.
ARTHUR helped him stand again, and he now fights with his late friend’s Driver “Rodine.”

Taken in as the 12th Knight, he hunts AOTO, believing him to be his father’s killer.
TRISTAN (MIREN) – Strategist and first Knight, originally ARTHUR’s secretary in the Council.
Now acting as acting Holy King, she commands the Knights during ARTHUR’s absence.
KAY (HILDA) – A brutally honest archer wielding “Ullnach.”
She joined as the eighth Knight and is infamous for her cutting tongue.
GARETH (BROWN) – The oldest Knight and a chef, wielding the staff‑gun “Bauman.”
He returned from retirement after ARTHUR personally recruited him.
LAMORAK (ORINA) – A martial artist from an isolated island, using the staff‑gun “Morgause.”
She only joined after ARTHUR bested her in combat.
LANCELOT (LYLE) – A flirtatious fighter raised by VIVIAN, first using the ring‑gun “Arondight” and later the holy sword “Caliburnus.”
He wants to “kill” the concept of Holy King ARTHUR while still cherishing the man himself.
PERCIVAL (LAN) – A stealth specialist and Council inspector forced on the Knights to keep an eye on ARTHUR.
Uses the gunblade “Dindran.”
MORDRED (RIO, female) – Initially distrustful of ARTHUR’s ideals, she wields “Guinevere.”
Later leaves the Knights and pursues her own path, understanding ARTHUR’s true intent better than anyone.
GAWAIN (FERIS) – The youngest Knight, who calls ARTHUR “Papa” though they are not related.
Orphaned by a terrorist attack, she was adopted by ARTHUR and wields the axe‑gun “Galatine.”
PALOMIDES (LOGAN) – A former mercenary who lost his wife and daughter.
After ARTHUR gives his life meaning, he pledges absolute loyalty, wielding the gun‑cannon “Beast.”
The Holy Geniuses
These are extraordinary minds whose talents shaped the world.
Most are badly scarred by their own experiments.
PAVLOV – A member of the World Council and father of AKANE.
Wields the prosthetic‑arm Driver “Eruption” after losing his arm in an experiment.
SCHRODINGER – A Council member and co‑perpetrator of Blue Christmas.
Uses the mouth‑seal Driver “Dirac,” searching endlessly for his first love.
LAPLACE – A fairy genius exiled from heaven as a dangerous element.
Uses the wing‑replacement Driver “Aile” to make up for her stolen wings.
CARNEADES – A philosopher of punishment who invented the concept of “Happiness Execution.”
Uses the eye‑Driver “Optalmos” in his left eye.
HEMPEL – A man whose heart was broken so badly by unrequited love that he literally removed it.
Uses the heart‑Driver “Herz” to fill the emptiness in his chest.
MOEBIUS – A prophet who once heard the voice of the future.
After sealing his hearing with the ear‑Driver “Loop,” he now remains the only Genius still in the Council.
Fifth‑Generation Autonomous Weapon Drivers
From a single design blueprint, the Holy Geniuses each created their own fifth‑generation autonomous weapon Driver.
These units have “Elements Hearts,” cores granting them emotion and self‑awareness.
Shiranui – Originally developed by PAVLOV, it fights AKANE and then joins him.
Samidare – Created by SCHRODINGER, loses to AOTO and then joins him.
Maikaze – Created by LAPLACE, is calmed and re‑started by MIDORI.
Raikou – Built by CARNEADES, is drawn into HIKARI’s orbit after a crepe‑shop incident.
Murakumo – Created by HEMPEL, loses to YUKARI in a lounge brawl and then joins her.
Awayuki – Another of MOEBIUS’s units, defeated by GINJI and reprogrammed to fight alongside him.
Replica – A near‑perfect reproduction of the original prototype “Origin,” also by MOEBIUS, later heavily upgraded.
Dragon King and Civilization Dragons
NOAH – Ancient Dragon King
NOAH commands the dragons from above the worlds.
Seeing the World Council opening the Divine Gate as a threat, he sends his elites to confront ARTHUR and the Knights.
Initially he misreads the situation and pushes his forces into conflict with ARTHUR, aiding the Council’s enemies by accident.
Later he recognizes ARTHUR’s true purpose and voices his respect.
NOAH shares an old grudge with OZ, the dragon who betrayed the Dragon World.
His six top subordinates, each paired with a nano‑dragon weapon, clash with the Knights of the Round:
Americana with Nano‑Salamander – Fights BEDIVERE and YVAIN.
Industra with Nano‑Leviathan – Fights TRISTAN and BRUNO.
Anders with Nano‑Jormungand – Fights KAY and GARETH.
Kouganea with Nano‑Fafnir – Fights LAMORAK and LANCELOT.
Egyptra with Nano‑Nidhogg – Fights PERCIVAL and MORDRED.
Mesopotia with Nano‑Ouroboros – Fights PALOMIDES and GAWAIN.
OZ and His Family
OZ
Once a dragon, OZ betrayed the Dragon World to help summon gods into the United World using blade‑dragon power.
He longs for a world where the weak are not crushed, but his methods are extreme.
He is timid and deeply devoted to his family, yet his actions ignite vast conflicts.
His “family” includes:
Dorothy (Elena) – MIDORI’s old friend who wanted to be her “number one” forever.
Toto – A fairy who believes he is a dog, adopted from an animal shelter.
Scarecrow – A lonely scarecrow from the West of the Sleeping Forest, saved by OZ.
Leon – A lion given wings by OZ, who in return becomes part of his family.

Trickster God and Allies
LOKI – Trickster God
LOKI appears as a World Council member yet constantly sows chaos.
He calls ARTHUR “my very own king,” needing him as proof that LOKI is a god.
After ARTHUR ascends to godhood, LOKI’s identity crisis deepens.
If no one clings to him as a god, is he really divine at all?
Shakespeare – Tragic Playwright
A wind “stage” spirit who writes living plays at LOKI’s command.
She creates combatants like Macbeth, Othello, Juliet, Hamlet, and Romeo as roles in her “Holy Play.”
Hempel – Fallen Genius
Now devoted to LOKI, he praises the citizens who gather to rescue ARTHUR.
He designs pernicious machines and orchestrates part of the King’s fall.
Heavenly Forces
HIKARI – Light Fairy Queen
After ousting godly influence, HIKARI becomes queen of the Heavenly World.
She strives to turn heaven into a truly happy place rather than a gilded cage.
During the Holy War, she learns she is not a natural mixed species but an artificially created subject of experiments on OBERON’s forbidden bloodline.
Though she does not inherit that blood, her existence is deeply tied to ancient sins.
VIVIAN – Fairy Strategist
VIVIAN is an “eternal 17” lake fairy who once held high office in heaven.
She is an excellent cook, a mother figure to LYLE, and an old friend of the Dragon King.
In the Holy War, she returns as strategic commander of heaven’s forces.
VLAD – Fallen Demon King
VLAD, once Demon King, fought in the previous Holy War.
Resurrected temporarily by necro‑doctor NECROSS, he now fights on heaven’s side to settle his unfinished battle with OBERON.

Snowy – Snow mage tasked with punishing deserters like Elisabeth.
Demonic Forces
YUKARI – Dark Witch Queen
After WALPURGIS’s collapse, YUKARI regains her childhood memories and realizes she was thrown from the Demonic World into the Normal World.
Blaming heaven for indirectly causing WALPURGIS’s fall, she declares war on heaven.
Empowered by the guardian Shadow, she overwhelms HIKARI in their Holy War duel.
WALPURGIS – Young Demon Queen
A child queen whose immense power is tied to her unstable emotions.
She constantly searches for a childhood friend who vanished.
FATIMA – Phantom Conductor
FATIMA wields huge political influence despite her unclear official role.
She orchestrates war, picks YUKARI as queen, and hides deep secrets about the Demonic World’s past.
Six Color Queens
Six fairy‑tale inspired queens who leave their thrones to become Demon Generals.
Red Queen Akazukin (Red Riding Hood) – Rules the Black Forest before becoming Crimson Flame Demon General.
Blue Queen Alice – Queen of the Curious Country, later Azure Water Demon General.
Green Queen Briar (Sleeping Beauty) – Queen of the Sleeping Forest, later Emerald Wind Demon General.

White Queen Snow White – Achieved revenge and became White Queen, only to be murdered and sent back in a coffin filled with lotus flowers to ignite war.
Six Demon Generals
Demon commanders who lead the armies against heaven: Himezuru, Murasame, Yasutsuna, Raikiri, Muramasa, and Nakiri.
They fight Weather Dries and other heavenly champions across the Holy War.
Divine Genius Maxwell
Maxwell – Divine Genius
A prodigy who designs advanced Drivers, including the zero‑generation autonomous unit Origin.
She once provided plans used by the Holy Geniuses and later cooperates with LOKI for her own goals.
Origin and Replica
Origin – Zero‑Generation Autonomous Driver
Maxwell’s original prototype Driver, predating all others.
It serves as the blueprint for the fifth‑generation series and the unfinished dream others tried to copy.
Replica – Fake That Can Become Anything
Replica is a fifth‑generation autonomous Driver built as a nearly perfect copy of Origin.
After battling ARTHUR and being destroyed, it is rebuilt by MOEBIUS with extra functions.
Because it is “fake,” Replica can become “anything.”
By rebooting itself, it can switch between seven modes: Homura, Mabui, Kagura, Nayuta, Orochi, Miyabi, and Full Burst.
In its upgraded form, Replica defeats the sixth‑generation unit Jotun, the Six Factory machines, and even confronts Origin itself as an equal.
Sixth‑Generation Units
Jotun – Water Machine Soldier
A sixth‑generation autonomous Driver derived from Maxwell’s work.
Mass‑produced versions called Jotun Zero are used as an army.
Lost Factory Six
Six machine units—Joule, Kelvin, Gall, Lux, Tesla, Decibel—designed in a hidden factory.
They represent various physical concepts and stand as testbeds for Maxwell’s evolving technology.
Bound Beasts
“Bound Beasts” are mixed species imprisoned and used as test subjects.
Youkou – Tiger‑based beast once caged by PAVLOV, freed during an explosion and later explains the truth to AKANE.
RURI – Otter‑based beast and sole witness of Blue Christmas, initially “protected” (imprisoned) by the Council.
Tokiwa – Cat‑based male beast who escapes prison, befriends GINJI, and later becomes his secretary.
Kogane – Rabbit‑based beast once used as a sample by CARNEADES, later promoted to assistant.
Kyou – Fox‑based beast freed by FATIMA in exchange for luring YUKARI to the Nightless Castle.
Namari – Dog‑based beast who follows SANTA CLAUSE after being freed, later guides Elisabeth and Merlin through the snow.
Necromancer
NECROSS – Death Doctor
A doctor at the resurrection clinic “Leviathan.”
Exiled from the Grimoire Cult for studying resurrection, he later revives VLAD for the Holy War.
Observer and Door’s Lord
Chronos – Time Observer
A god who watches the endless cycle of world destruction and rebirth from the rift of time.
He uses the Driver “Timeless World” and relaxes by shopping via mail order.
Door’s Lord
A mysterious entity who appeared from the Divine Gate on Judgment Day.
Its identity and true purpose remain unclear, but multiple factions either worship or fear it.
Anime‑Original Characters
Boy K
A mysterious child visible only to those who have tasted despair, such as AOTO in the anime.
He is actually the spirit of the Divine Gate’s key, a godlike being strong enough to drive back even the north European gods.
He helps those who seek the gate but is not inherently on humanity’s side.
System Voice
The disembodied voice that announces system messages in the anime.
It acts like the interface of the Divine Gate itself, guiding or manipulating events.
Comedy Spin‑Off: Tokimeki Saint Gate Academy
On April Fools’ Day 2014, the official Twitter announced “Saint Gate Academy,” a school parody of Divine Gate.
In 2015, these alternate‑universe versions were added as real units in the game.
These include roles like “Burning Baseball Club Member AKANE,” “Three‑Year Repeat Student OZ,” “Kind Vice‑President AOTO,” “Beloved Student Council President VIVIAN,” “Health Room Fairy HEMPEL,” “Health Room Demon NECROSS,” “Everyone’s Little Sister WALPURGIS,” and “Mysterious Transfer Student GINJI.”
They reimagine serious characters in a lighthearted school setting, balancing the franchise’s generally heavy tone.
Crossovers
Divine Gate ran frequent collaboration events with other franchises.
Guest characters came from works such as Steins;Gate, Fairy Tail, Attack on Titan, Psycho‑Pass, Date A Live, Re:Zero, Fate, Madoka Magica, Durarara!!, Sword Oratoria, and many more, plus sports teams and fashion brands.
These events offered limited‑time quests, unique crossover units, and playful interactions between universes.
They became a major reason many players first tried the game.
Anime Production
The TV anime is based on the game’s core storyline with some changes and additions.
It aired in 2016, with narration by Megumi Ogata and theme songs by Hitorie and Vistlip.
Noriyuki Abe directed the series at Studio Pierrot, with Natsuko Takahashi handling series composition.
Character designs were adapted from the game art by Ichiro Uno and Cindy H. Yamauchi, keeping the stylish, contrast‑heavy look.
Blu‑ray and DVD volumes were released across 2016, sometimes bundling bonuses like in‑game serial codes.
A web radio, “Radio Divine Gate,” ran alongside the anime, hosted by the voice actors for AKANE, AOTO, and ARTHUR.
Books
An official art book, Divine Gate Official Art Works, collects over 500 illustrations and lays out the world’s timeline and terms.
It also includes an interview with key staff and an original short story.
A novel, Divine Gate: The King and the Mischievous Interlude, written by Sadako Sasaki with art by Tsubata Nozaki, explores stories not depicted in the anime.
It focuses on ARTHUR, LOKI, and other key figures between main story beats, supervised by scenario director Kouta Takano.
