Summer Pockets is a romance adventure game released by Key in June 2018.

Set on the fictional Torishirojima Island in the Seto Inland Sea,

the story follows Hairi Takahara, who visits the island for his late grandmother’s belongings and experiences a refreshing, emotional summer with new friends.

The game became beloved for its charming characters and nostalgic summertime atmosphere,

spawning enhanced versions, manga adaptations, radio shows, and a TV anime airing from 2025.

After the release of Harmonia in 2016, Key sought a new project distinct from previous works like Angel Beats!.

The concept came from Jun Maeda, with the intention to keep the classic "enjoyable daily life and moving story" flavor, but with a fresh take.

Instead of following existing Key works too closely, a company-wide pitch resulted in Maeda’s "summer memories on a remote island" theme taking the spotlight.

Due to Maeda’s health at the time, scenario writers Yu Niijima and Hasama joined, bringing new perspectives while respecting Maeda’s narrative framework.

Torishirojima, inspired by real Seto Inland Sea islands such as Naoshima, Ogijima, and Megijima, is a remote, serene island.

The setting oozes nostalgia with its rural landscapes, picturesque beaches, and strong sense of community.

Myths about spirits, old traditions, and emotional connections between the locals form a core part of the island’s mood.

From the dock to the onsen, to mysterious forests and lighthouses, every location is infused with a gentle yet mysterious warmth.

During summer break, Hairi Takahara visits Torishirojima to help his aunt Kyoko Misaki organize his late grandmother’s belongings.

While living on the island, Hairi befriends quirky locals and a series of mysterious, colorful heroines—Shiroha Naruse, Ao Sorakado, Kamome Kushima, and Tsumugi Wenders.

Each girl hides a secret closely tied to the island’s lore.

By following each path, Hairi unravels individual stories of self-discovery, loss, and hope.

Clearing all four heroines’ stories unlocks the special ALKA and Pocket endings, revealing deeper truths about Torishirojima and the protagonist’s journey.

The Reflection Blue enhanced version introduces more routes and heroines, each adding new layers to the bittersweet narrative of summer’s fleeting beauty.

  • ALKA Route: The pivotal "grand route" that reveals the central mystery after all heroine stories are cleared.
  • Pocket Route: A post-ending route unlocking after ALKA, offering emotional closure and tying together the broader themes.
  • Seven Shadow Butterflies: Spirit-like beings holding echoes of memories, crucial to certain character arcs.
  • Grand Ending: The ultimate resolution, often involving supernatural elements and closure for the cast.

The TV anime adaptation began airing in April 2025, animated by feel., directed by Tomoki Kobayashi, and overseen by Keiichiro Ochi.

Manga Adaptations

Two manga spin-offs: one focusing on Tsumugi, running in Dengeki Moeoh and Kadokomi from February 2025; the other, a main story adaptation illustrated by wogura, serialized in Tonari no Young Jump from May 2025.

Web Radio

Several radio shows hosted by cast and staff, including "Samapoke Kiki Komi Radio,” “Summer Pockets Radio ~Naruse Family's Dining Table~,” and “Summer Pockets Remote Island Support Radio.”

The scenario was written by Yu Niijima, Hasama, and Sakae (supervised by Jun Maeda).

Character design was led by Na-Ga, Tsubasu Izumi, and Yuunon Nagayama for the main heroines, with subdesigns by Fumuyun and SD art by Engiyoshi.

The game ran on SiglusEngine and was published by Visual Arts/Key for PC/mobile, and Prototype for Switch/PS4.

The anime adaptation also included original staff: Director Tomoki Kobayashi, Series Composer Keiichiro Ochi, and Character Designer Mai Otsuka.

Music was provided by Key’s well-known composers, including Shinji Orito and Jun Maeda.

  • Opening: "Alkatale" by Konomi Suzuki (lyrics by Sakae, music by Shinji Orito)
  • Reflection Blue OP: "Astalor" by Konomi Suzuki
  • Ending: "Lasting Moment” by Konomi Suzuki (lyrics by Yu Niijima, music by Donmaru)
  • Special Endings: "Wings Cradle” (Vocal: Runa Mizutani), "Fill Your Pocket” (Vocal: rionos, lyrics by Jun Maeda)
  • Insert Songs: Character-specific vocal tracks reflect pivotal story moments, including “Summer Vacation of Tsumugi” and “Night Flower.”

Summer Pockets won first place overall and in the scenario category at the 2018 Getchu.com Bishoujo Game Awards.

It also won the grand prize and user support award at the 2018 Moe Game Awards.

The game is highly praised for its heartfelt storytelling, evocative background art, and memorable soundtrack.

It stands out among Key's catalog as both a nostalgic homage and a new take on the classic "summer youth" theme.

Fans appreciate its unique structure—where cleared routes change the title screen and the narrative presentation.

Enhanced versions and multimedia adaptations like anime and manga have expanded its audience.

It is often considered among the best romance visual novels of its time.

  • Playable on Windows, iOS, Android, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4.
  • Features full voice acting (except for the protagonist; partial voice in Reflection Blue).
  • Known for collectible mini-games and innovative interface design.
  • Inspired merchandise, events, and official guidebooks have been released.
  • The TV anime adaptation streams worldwide and was accompanied by live events and radio broadcasts.
