Marudase Kintaro is a Japanese manga series created by Naomi Guren, with a strong focus on school comedy and boys’ love genres.

The story combines outrageous humor, dynamic action, and romantic tension as it follows the eccentric protector Kintarou Masaka and his beloved, Makoto Onodera.

The manga started as "Masaka no Kintarou" and later continued under the title "Marudase Kintaro," with an animated short film adaptation released in 2020.

Known for its bold parodies of classic heroes and a playful approach to BL tropes, the series stands out with memorable catchphrases, unique character powers, and a mix of heartfelt and hilarious moments.

The original manga, "Masaka no Kintarou," was serialized from 2008 to 2010 in CitaCita magazine by Houbunsha.

Naomi Guren wanted to create a BL story with the feel of a shounen manga.

Inspired by the iconic Kintaro folk hero’s attire, Guren imagined the comedic chaos if an adult wore such a costume in modern times.

Originally, both Makoto and Kintarou were conceptualized as teachers, with Kintarou arriving as the new principal to reform a troubled school.

However, the plot shifted—Kintarou became a brawny janitor executing justice, while Makoto turned into an adorable uke (bottom) student.

Guren intended the series to be a tale of good vs. evil but insisted "there are truly no bad people" at its heart.

Set at Onodera Academy, a prestigious school with a quirky legacy, the environment is anything but ordinary.

Makoto Onodera, an elite student and the school's chairman, is constantly threatened due to a bizarre will left by the previous headmaster: whoever can seduce Makoto becomes the next principal.

This rule makes life chaotic, as all sorts of eccentric characters hatch plots to win Makoto over.

Standing in their way is Kintarou Masaka, Makoto’s fiercely loyal bodyguard, who doubles as the academy’s unstoppable janitor and wields his trusty axe, Masao.

At the heart of the story is Makoto Onodera, a strong-willed, cute student serving as Onodera Academy's chairman.

Due to the late principal’s will—whoever bests him in love games claims the headmaster title—Makoto is constantly pursued.

Fortunately, his boyfriend and protector, Kintarou Masaka, stands between him and constant danger.

Kintarou, a university student on hiatus for mountain training, serves as Makoto’s janitor/bodyguard, doling out punishment to anyone who threatens his love.

The main conflict arises when challengers from Kawakara Branch School arrive, launching scheme after scheme to humiliate Makoto or seduce Kintarou.

The duo counter every trap with both slapstick and cleverness, with Kintarou’s ultimate move being the legendary "Embarrassment Killer, Porori Drop."

"Embarrassment Killer, Porori Drop"

Kintarou’s signature technique, which involves shocking an opponent into defeat with sheer embarrassment—often with comic results.

Masao

Kintarou’s trusty axe and sidekick, always at his side during battles against wrongdoers.

The original story "Masaka no Kintarou" was published by Houbunsha in 2010.

Following its success, the series switched publishers to Junet, which began digital serialization of "Marudase Kintarou" in 2017.

The compilation book was released in 2018.

In 2020, a short anime adaptation was produced as part of the "BL FES!! - Boys Love Festival!!" film event, with a limited two-week theatrical run.

The 2020 anime adaptation was directed by Hideki Araki and produced by Animation Studio Seven.

It was released as a short film alongside the anime adaptation of "Yes, No, or Maybe Half?"

Screenplay was written by Yoku Arizo, with character design by Soramotokan, and color design by Naoto Kondo.

The film is rated PG-12 for suggestive content.

The film features the energetic theme "Ai wa Muteki" ("Love is Invincible"), performed by Toshiyuki Morikawa, who also voices Kintarou Masaka.

The lyrics were written by Naomi Guren, with music composed and arranged by Tomohiro Sumigama.

Main Characters:

The bold, powerful, and hilariously stubborn janitor-turned-bodyguard, always ready to unleash his "Porori Drop" on villains.

The cute yet unyielding student chairman, beloved by Kintarou and relentlessly targeted by schemers.

One of the colorful cast of challengers.

Another unique rival.

  • Inukai (voiced by Wataru Hatano)

A troublemaker from the rival school.

A notable challenger with his own agenda.

The series stands out with its witty blend of over-the-top action, affectionate parody of classic Japanese heroes, and heartwarming romance.

It appeals to both BL fans and readers who love unique takes on traditional fighting and school drama tropes.
