Edit

A Certain Magical Index is a Japanese light novel series written by Kazuma Kamachi and illustrated by Kiyotaka Haimura, serving as the foundation for a wide array of derivative and media-mix works. Published by Dengeki Bunko since April 2004, this popular franchise is often referred to as the "Toaru Series" when including its numerous spin-offs. It blends science fiction and fantasy, depicting a dynamic world where a technologically advanced "Science Side" and an occult-driven "Magic Side" clash.

Works Background

The series came to life when Kazuma Kamachi's submission, though failing the third selection round of the 9th Dengeki Novel Grand Prize, captured the attention of his editor, Kazuma Miki. After a year of collaborative prototyping, a story about a nun girl and a boy with a mysterious right arm became the genesis of "A Certain Magical Index."

Kamachi's initial inspiration stemmed from a curiosity about real-life historical magicians and rituals, moving beyond typical RPG wizard tropes. He delved deep into these topics using search engines. The world-building expanded significantly from this point, starting with the character Index Librorum Prohibitorum, around whom magic and KAMIJO TOUMA were developed, eventually giving rise to the contrasting setting of Academy City.

Structure

The narrative is primarily written in the third person, often employing a "god's-eye view" that shifts between different character perspectives, though it largely centers on the protagonist. As the story evolves and more characters are introduced, it gradually transforms into a compelling ensemble drama.

Each volume features distinct keywords and themes, leading to noticeable shifts in atmosphere and style. Kamachi himself has mentioned setting experimental challenges for each volume, constantly exploring new narrative techniques and literary skills.

The series is broadly divided into major arcs: volumes 7-11 cover the "Roman Orthodox Church Arc," while volumes 12-22 detail the "God's Right Seat Arc." Following a significant turning point in the "God's Right Seat Arc," the numbering was reset after volume 22, launching the new 23-volume series, A Certain Magical Index: New Testament. In February 2020, the numbering was reset once more for the ongoing series, A Certain Magical Index: Genesis Testament.

Style and Features

The series often draws comparisons to Shonen Manga, with its core revolving around the protagonist battling to overcome formidable challenges. Kamachi describes it as a story where "the protagonist directly confronts magicians or espers burdened with complex problems," and KAMIJO TOUMA's unwavering resolve in these fights forms the backbone of the narrative.

A distinctive feature is the frequent use of unique readings for Kanji (phonetic guides, primarily in Katakana) for in-universe terminology and character aliases. Kamachi also notes that explanations of the world's intricate setting frequently appear within the narration or dialogue, leading to dramatic shifts in character actions from scene to scene.

The cast of characters is incredibly diverse, with well over 100 named individuals and designs, including a substantial number of heroines. Kamachi excels at crafting new stories centered around new heroines and characters, asserting that he "throws all kinds of heroines into one series, leaving no blind spots." While early volumes rotated the central heroine to maintain reader engagement, the focus gradually shifted towards world-building around volume 9.

Kamachi aims for a narrative where stories are built around characters designated as protagonists. This means that focusing on any character within the series can generate a unique story centered on them, making everyone a potential protagonist. This approach explains the increasing number of main and secondary main characters as the plot unfolds.

Many characters possess distinctive speech patterns and verbal tics, a clever narrative device that allows readers to instantly identify who is speaking without constant descriptive interjections in dialogue.

Achievements and Recognition

As of June 2019, the original light novel series had cumulatively sold over 18 million copies, and by July of the same year, the entire "Toaru Series" had surpassed 31 million copies in print. Notably, this series was the first in Dengeki Bunko's history to have its original novel volumes exceed 10 million copies sold.

Upon the release of its first volume, the series became an instant smash hit, described by its editor as "selling like crazy" and an "unprecedented feat for an unknown rookie author," necessitating an immediate reprint shortly after its launch. According to research by Nikkei Entertainment!, the readership is predominantly men in their early twenties.

In November 2010, the series achieved an unparalleled four-crown victory in Takarajimasha's "Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! 2011" (This Light Novel is Amazing! 2011). It ranked first in the Series category, with KAMIJO TOUMA topping the Male Character category, MISAKA MIKOTO leading the Female Character category, and Kiyotaka Haimura securing first place in the Illustrator category. The series further cemented its legacy by clinching the top spot in the "Best Light Novel of the Decade" ranking in 2014, with its characters consistently dominating male and female character polls. In "Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! 2020," it ranked second in the "Overall Ranking of the 2010s," earning it a revered place in the Hall of Fame. It also secured second place in the Light Novel category of the "E-Book Award 2014."

High school student KAMIJO TOUMA, an unassuming resident of this futuristic city, unexpectedly encounters a pure white nun entangled on his balcony. She introduces herself as Index Librorum Prohibitorum and reveals she is being pursued by magicians. This fateful encounter thrusts KAMIJO TOUMA into a complex world where science and magic not only coexist but also constantly collide.

The story's divisions in the Original Series and New Testament adhere to the official timeline on Kazuma Kamachi's website.

Original Series

Academy City Arc (Volumes 1-10)

Volume 1:

On July 20th, KAMIJO TOUMA meets Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a nun claiming to be chased by magicians. Initially disbelieving, he is soon confronted by Stiyl Magnus and Kaori Kanzaki of the Anglican Church, who are indeed after Index Librorum Prohibitorum.

Volume 2:

On August 8th, KAMIJO TOUMA loses his memories while saving Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a fact he conceals from those around him. Later, Stiyl Magnus informs him that Aisa Himegami, a miko known as "Deep Blood," is held captive at Misawa Cram School. KAMIJO TOUMA is compelled to resolve this magical incident, saving Aisa from Aureolus Izzard, a former Roman Orthodox Church alchemist who has occupied the school.

Volume 3:

On August 20th, KAMIJO TOUMA encounters a girl strikingly similar to MISAKA MIKOTO, one of the Sisters. He soon uncovers a gruesome experiment taking place in Academy City's underbelly and learns of Mikoto's desperate attempts to stop it. To halt the experiment, KAMIJO TOUMA challenges Accelerator, Academy City's strongest esper, who is the subject of the experiment.

Volume 4:

On August 28th, after defeating Accelerator, KAMIJO TOUMA temporarily leaves Academy City and heads to the beach with his parents and Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Strange events unfold as people's appearances and inner selves swap, though only KAMIJO TOUMA perceives the anomaly. Motoharu Tsuchimikado and Kaori Kanzaki reveal this is the work of a grand magic called "Angel Fall," and KAMIJO TOUMA joins them to resolve the situation.

Volume 5:

On August 31st, Accelerator meets Last Order, a young girl, and finds himself striving to protect her.

Also on August 31st, MISAKA MIKOTO is frequently invited on dates by a refreshing boy, Mitsuki Unabara. Desperate, she leaps onto a passing KAMIJO TOUMA, asking him to pretend to be her boyfriend.

Later that day, KAMIJO TOUMA, relieved the commotion with MISAKA MIKOTO is over, is suddenly confronted by the magician Ayame Yamisaka, who kidnaps Index Librorum Prohibitorum.

Volume 6:

On September 1st, the first day of the new semester, Index Librorum Prohibitorum meets a girl named Hyōka Kazakiri at KAMIJO TOUMA's high school, and they become "friends." The trio visits the underground mall, where the golem-wielding magician Sherry Cromwell appears and attacks them.

Volume 7:

On September 8th, the "Book of the Law," a legendary grimoire held by the Roman Orthodox Church, and Orsola Aquinas, the nun who supposedly deciphered it, are kidnapped in Japan. The culprits are revealed to be the Amakusa-style Remix Church, where Kaori Kanzaki once belonged. The Anglican Church, wishing to keep Kanzaki uninvolved, dispatches Stiyl Magnus to Japan. Index Librorum Prohibitorum, as a grimoire expert, and KAMIJO TOUMA, her guardian, are also pressed into action to rescue Orsola.

Volume 8:

On September 14th, Teleport of the "Judgment" committee begins investigating a case of a stolen carry case within the city. Her investigation with her colleague Hatsuharu Kazari reveals the culprit to be Awaki Musujime, a higher-ranked Teleporter. A battle over "Remnants" and individual notions of justice unfolds across Academy City's nightscape.

Volumes 9-10:

On September 19th, Academy City is abuzz with the massive "Daihasei Festival." Meanwhile, the Anglican Church discovers that the Roman Orthodox Church plans to use this period to trade the "Stab Sword," a magical artifact capable of killing a Saint. Stiyl Magnus, Motoharu Tsuchimikado, and KAMIJO TOUMA—once again drawn into a magic-side incident—pursue Ludivine Lorenzetti, a Roman Orthodox nun who infiltrated the city, and Oriana Thomson, a transporter.

"God's Right Seat" Arc (Volumes 11-22)

Volume 11:

On September 25th, the final day of the Daihasei Festival, KAMIJO TOUMA wins first prize in the attendance lottery: a seven-day, five-night trip to Northern Italy for two. In Chioggia, KAMIJO TOUMA and Index Librorum Prohibitorum reunite with Orsola and the Amakusa-style members. As KAMIJO TOUMA tries to enjoy his vacation, he is attacked, learning that the Roman Orthodox Church plans to use a magical artifact called the "Queen of the Adriatic" to destabilize Academy City and the Science Side itself. KAMIJO TOUMA and the Amakusa-style members confront Biagio Busoni, the bishop leading the Queen's Fleet, and the Agnes Squad in the water city.

Volumes 12-13:

On September 30th, KAMIJO TOUMA is forced to spend a day with MISAKA MIKOTO as a penalty from the Daihasei Festival. Simultaneously, Accelerator is discharged from Heaven Canceller's hospital but is immediately thrown into chaos by Last Order.

Having had their trump card, the "Queen of the Adriatic," nullified by KAMIJO TOUMA in Chioggia, the Roman Orthodox Church officially declares him an enemy. Vento of the Front, a member of the "God's Right Seat," invades Academy City, and KAMIJO TOUMA confronts her. As Academy City is paralyzed by the magic-side invasion, Aleister Crowley orders Hamura, a member of his direct dark side organization "Hound Dog," to kidnap Last Order to activate his trump card, Hyouka Kazakiri. Accelerator battles the "Hound Dog" unit to protect Last Order.

SS1 (Side Story 1):

On October 3rd, the "0930" incident—involving Vento's attack and the "Hound Dog" unit's schemes—is resolved. KAMIJO TOUMA and his classmates return to their usual daily lives. However, parents, sensing the danger in Academy City from the recent chaos, begin a movement to retrieve their children.

Amidst this, Accelerator, who has fallen into the dark side organization "Group," receives a mission from the city's upper echelons.

Volume 14:

On October 7th, with the conflict between Academy City and the Roman Orthodox Church laid bare, large-scale anti-Science Side demonstrations by Roman Orthodox followers erupt worldwide. Unaware of this, KAMIJO TOUMA is living his normal school life when he is asked for a life-or-death cooperation by Moana Oyafune, a member of the Governing Board.

Motoharu Tsuchimikado takes KAMIJO TOUMA to Avignon, France, where he learns the source of the global unrest is a Roman Orthodox magical artifact called the "C Document." In Avignon, KAMIJO TOUMA coincidentally meets Itsuwa, who is also searching for the "C Document," and they head to the Papal Palace amidst the demonstrations. There, they are ambushed by Terra of the Left, a member of the "God's Right Seat," who uses magic known as "Light Execution."

Volume 15:

On October 9th, Academy City observes its Independence Day holiday. Seizing the opportunity of relaxed security after the Avignon invasion, the city's dark side organizations "Block" and "School" initiate a rebellion. In response, dark side organizations like "Group," to which Accelerator and Motoharu Tsuchimikado belong, along with "Item" and "Member," move to suppress them. A complex conflict involving these organizations begins, each pursuing its own objectives.

Volume 16:

KAMIJO TOUMA, now pursued by the Roman Orthodox Church, tries to maintain his normal school life. Suddenly, Itsuwa of the Amakusa-style appears, informing him that Acqua of the Back, a member of the "God's Right Seat," has threatened an attack on KAMIJO TOUMA to the Anglican Church, prompting her protection assignment in Academy City. Despite the Amakusa-style's robust defenses, Acqua easily breaches them, nearly killing KAMIJO TOUMA right before Itsuwa's eyes.

Itsuwa and the Amakusa-style vow revenge, but face a dire situation against the overwhelming power of the Saint Acqua. Then, Kaori Kanzaki, a Saint and former Papess of the Amakusa-style Remix Church, appears to rescue them, igniting a battle between Saints.

SS2 (Side Story 2):

In January, a trio of skill-out boys engages in a car chase with security forces. In March, Number Seven Sogiita Gunha goes on a rampage. In May, the magician Ollerus conducts an investigation for a mysterious plan, while the self-proclaimed kunoichi girl Kuo relentlessly pursues Hanzo, a boy descended from ninjas.

As various stories unfold across seasons, a struggle over "Originals" scattered worldwide intensifies, with multiple agendas intersecting.

Volumes 17-18:

On October 17th, the "Index Librorum Prohibitorum Summons" is issued, requiring Index Librorum Prohibitorum and her guardian, KAMIJO TOUMA, to travel to England. In England, concerns rise over the bombing of the Eurotunnel, potentially involving the Magic Side. Index Librorum Prohibitorum is summoned due to this, but KAMIJO TOUMA and his group become caught in a hijacking.

It's soon revealed that these events were orchestrated by the Second Princess Carissa and the Knight faction, leading to Carissa's coup d'état. As England descends into panic, KAMIJO TOUMA acts to save Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Suddenly, Acqua, who was believed dead, reappears before Carissa and her allies.

Volume 19:

On October 17th, the dark side organization "Group" investigates "Dragon," a city secret they discovered during the inter-dark side conflicts. Amidst this, another dark side organization, "Airtight Unit," stages a terrorist attack, and "Group" receives orders to suppress it.

At the same time, Hamazura Shiage, a former low-ranking member of "Item," was living a peaceful life with the surviving Kinuhata Saiai and Takitsubo Rikou. However, as they plan to celebrate Takitsubo's hospital discharge, Takitsubo is caught in the terrorist attack. Furthermore, they are attacked by Stephanie, who vows revenge on Kinuhata, and the Accelerator, whom Hamazura believed he had killed, appears before Hamazura and Takitsubo as they flee.

Volumes 20-22:

On October 19th, the Third World War erupts as Russia declares war on Academy City. The massive conflict, involving both Science and Magic Sides, is orchestrated by Fiamma of the Right, the last member of the "God's Right Seat."

KAMIJO TOUMA, pursuing Fiamma to Russia to save Index Librorum Prohibitorum, is joined by Lesser, who wants to draw him into the British forces. Simultaneously, Accelerator searches Russia, following the word "Index Librorum Prohibitorum" given by Aiwass to save Last Order. Hamazura, having escaped Academy City, also wanders Russia to treat Takitsubo.

These three, with their individual objectives, become directly and indirectly intertwined as they converge on the Elizalina Independent Nation Alliance.

New Testament

Othinus Arc (Volumes 1-10)

New Testament Volume 1:

Days after the Third World War ends, Hamazura and Accelerator return to Academy City, cutting ties with its dark underbelly to live normal lives. Separately, they learn about Fremea Seivelun, a girl pursued by a new dark side organization called "Freshmen." Hamazura cooperates with Hanzo, who is harboring Fremea, while Accelerator investigates the situation with Misaka Worst. Amidst the intense attacks from "Freshmen," Fremea is eventually kidnapped.

New Testament Volume 2:

On November 5th, KAMIJO TOUMA, Accelerator, and Hamazura gather in KAMIJO TOUMA's room, where Leivinia Birdway discusses a mysterious force that appeared after World War III and its ties to the Magic Side.

Meanwhile, a giant, unidentified aerial fortress called "Radio Sonde Fortress" begins a collision course from outer space towards Academy City. The trio springs into action to prevent its fall.

New Testament Volume 3:

On November 10th, having learned that "Gremlin," a hybrid organization of science and magic responsible for the "Radio Sonde Fortress," is active in Hawaii, KAMIJO TOUMA and his friends head there under Leivinia's guidance. Simultaneously, Robert Katze, the President of the United States, already in Hawaii, senses "Gremlin's" conspiracy within his government and acts alone to thwart it.

The "Trident" PMC, allied with "Gremlin," launches an invasion of Hawaii, revealing another mastermind: Ollerus. KAMIJO TOUMA and Robert join forces, striving to foil "Gremlin's" schemes.

New Testament Volume 4:

On November 13th, Leivinia Birdway's maneuvering leads to 27 "Anti-Academy City Science Guardian" companies declaring the "Natural Selector" superhuman martial arts tournament in Baggage City, Eastern Europe. This tournament, however, is a ploy by "Gremlin."

In response, Academy City deploys three members of the "Kihara family" to subdue Baggage City. KAMIJO TOUMA also infiltrates Baggage City alone to thwart "Gremlin's" conspiracy.

New Testament Volumes 5-6:

In November, Academy City prepares for the massive cultural festival, "Daihasei Festival." KAMIJO TOUMA, back from his battle with "Gremlin," finds himself caught up in the festival preparations, regaining a semblance of his normal life.

Suddenly, Thor, a "Gremlin" magician, appears. His objective is to rescue Fraulein Kreutune, an immortal woman targeted by Othinus, the "Gremlin" leader and Magic God, as a host for "Holistic Esper." Understanding the situation, KAMIJO TOUMA cooperates with Thor to save her.

New Testament Volume 7:

In November, due to a scheme by Motoharu Tsuchimikado, KAMIJO TOUMA is thrown into the "Scholarship Garden" to search for a magical artifact placed by a magician within Academy City. With the help of Shokuhō Misaki, Academy City's fifth-ranked esper, KAMIJO TOUMA searches for the artifact. However, just as he begins to doubt Motoharu's actions, he witnesses shocking news of his sister Maika Tsuchimikado's death.

Realizing that the root cause of these incidents is Yakumi Hisako, a member of the Governing Board, KAMIJO TOUMA rushes to find her. The situation escalates into a massive free-for-all, drawing together 7,500 "heroes" and 7 espers hidden within Academy City.

New Testament Volume 8:

Othinus, the "Gremlin" Magic God, begins creating the divine spear "Gungnir" to perfectly wield her power as a Magic God. In response, the world's magical factions form an alliance to counter "Gremlin."

Soon, the creation site of Gungnir is identified as Tokyo Bay, triggering an all-out confrontation between "Gremlin" and the allied forces. Meanwhile, KAMIJO TOUMA, crucial to the counter-Gremlin strategy, infiltrates "Sargasso," "Gremlin's" headquarters that appeared in Tokyo Bay, along with his companions.

New Testament Volume 9:

Othinus, the "Gremlin" Magic God, completes the divine spear "Gungnir" and uses it to effortlessly destroy not just "Sargasso," "Gremlin's" headquarters, but the entire world.

In a space of absolute darkness, only KAMIJO TOUMA remains, possessing the "Imagine Breaker," the world's reference and repair point.

As a god, Othinus then creates a "world" designed to break his spirit.

New Testament Volume 10:

After countless loops, Othinus finds an understanding in KAMIJO TOUMA and restores the world. However, the "Fairy-ification" magic cast by Ollerus threatens to destroy her body.

To save Othinus, KAMIJO TOUMA travels with her to Denmark, aiming for Egeskov Castle. Yet, his path is blocked by comrades from both the Science and Magic Sides, and indeed, the entire world, all of whom harbor hatred for Othinus.

Thus begins a desperate escape, a two-against-six-billion struggle.

"Magic God" Arc (Volumes 11-18)

New Testament Volume 11:

Shokuhō Misaki, a mind-controlling esper from Tokiwadai Middle School, reflects on August of the previous year, when she first met KAMIJO TOUMA.

New Testament Volume 12:

After navigating the Denmark incident and being discharged from the hospital, KAMIJO TOUMA returns to his 'ordinary' high school life with his classmates. Othinus, stripped of her Magic God powers, begins serving her punishment by residing at KAMIJO TOUMA's apartment, immediately finding herself chased by the pet Sphinx.

On December 1st, KAMIJO TOUMA, Index Librorum Prohibitorum, Sphinx, and Othinus head to the enormous multi-purpose facility, "Diamond," in the Fifteenth District after school. Simultaneously, the members of "Item" waiting for Hamazura Shiage, and the mysterious Academy City's Sixth-ranked Esper "Aihana Etsu," are also acting within the same facility.

Suddenly, the "Diamond" building is sealed off by a mysterious individual calling themselves "Saint-Germain," claiming to be a Magic God. KAMIJO TOUMA, Hamazura, "Item," and "Aihana Etsu" each pursue their objectives, directly and indirectly, as they close in on "Saint-Germain."

New Testament Volume 13:

On December 3rd, Academy City holds a "Crime Prevention Orientation" involving all school districts, and KAMIJO TOUMA is chosen as the "culprit." While evading capture within his school, he discovers a strange letter in a shoe locker near the elevator. Following the instructions to the rooftop, he finds "Bishop," a Magic God of the "True Gremlin."

KAMIJO TOUMA rejects Bishop's proposal, leading to a confrontation. Bishop attacks him with magic. In response, KAMIJO TOUMA, joined by MISAKA MIKOTO (who was at another high school for the orientation), begins a frantic escape on a high-tech bicycle called "Acro Bike." A fierce chase battle erupts across Academy City.

New Testament Volume 14:

On the night of December 3rd, KAMIJO TOUMA learns from Nephthys, who appeared at his home, that Kamisato Kakeru, wielding "World Rejecter," has infiltrated Academy City. Meanwhile, Patricia Birdway becomes parasitized by "Sample Shoggoth," and after being shuttled between treatment facilities, she arrives in Academy City. Her sister, Leivinia Birdway, enters the city, risking her own life to save Patricia. While KAMIJO TOUMA protects Leivinia, Patricia is taken in by Kamisato, and she asks for his cooperation to prevent her sister's sacrifice. KAMIJO TOUMA confronts Kamisato, who appeared at his dormitory in pursuit of a "Magic God." They temporarily cease hostilities to work together to save Patricia, and through their efforts and Nephthys's sacrifice, the sisters are saved from mortal danger. KAMIJO TOUMA then clashes with Kamisato again; although his "Imagine Breaker" is nullified, he repels Kamisato with "something" hidden within it. Kamisato then fights Kihara Byoukan, obliterating his "Anti-Magic System Driving Armor" and leaving him mortally wounded. Kihara Yuiitsu vows to surpass all existing "Kihara" members and become a unique entity, fulfilling Byoukan's dying wish.

New Testament Volume 15:

On December 4th, with his school destroyed by Bishop's incident, KAMIJO TOUMA and his classmates are temporarily relocated to another school. There, KAMIJO TOUMA encounters Kamisato Kakeru again. Simultaneously, Saku, Kamisato's adopted sister and an "Extermination Criminal" who infiltrated Academy City, contacts Hamazura—a "target"—to destabilize "KAMIJO TOUMA's faction," then clashes with MISAKA MIKOTO. MISAKA MIKOTO, despairing over her own developmental path, becomes intrigued by Saku's unknown powers.

KAMIJO TOUMA interacts with Asuka Kasei, the student council president of the host school, and Akikawa Mie, who looks after her, and also works alongside Kamisato, who helps the student council. Although KAMIJO TOUMA cooperates with Kamisato's proposed plan against Saku, Kamisato's offer turns out to be a trap, and KAMIJO TOUMA is attacked by Kamisato's faction. However, Saku intervenes, confronting Kamisato and rousing Accelerator to rescue KAMIJO TOUMA. Saku realizes that KAMIJO TOUMA's power is essential to awaken Kamisato and forms an alliance with him.

Akikawa notices a change in Asuka Kasei's behavior and confides in KAMIJO TOUMA. When KAMIJO TOUMA and Saku learn that the rumor about the incinerator is Kamisato's doing, they suspect the real student council president is trapped there and rush to stop students from lighting it. Finding nothing inside, KAMIJO TOUMA disappoints the students and becomes isolated. When Kamisato appears, Saku and Akikawa are furious, but Kamisato denies knowing about the student council president, claiming the rumor had another purpose. As the four are confused, Asuka Kasei appears, severing Kamisato's "World Rejecter" as Kihara Yuiitsu reveals her true identity.

With "World Rejecter" in hand, Yuiitsu battles Saku's faction, who seek to reclaim Kamisato's right hand, and KAMIJO TOUMA. Despite Saku's "External Offering" providing ample attacks and "World Rejecter" being ineffective, they fight well until a Magic God created by Yuiitsu obliterates them. KAMIJO TOUMA and Saku are rescued by MISAKA MIKOTO, but Yuiitsu's pursuit scatters them. MISAKA MIKOTO, alone and falling into a building, contacts "Anti-Magic System Driving Armor." Yuiitsu's focus shifts to MISAKA MIKOTO, fearing her touching the memento, giving KAMIJO TOUMA and Saku a chance. However, their hesitation creates an opening, and KAMIJO TOUMA is captured by Yuiitsu. Witnessing this, MISAKA MIKOTO impulsively uses the "Anti-Magic System Driving Armor," fearing KAMIJO TOUMA's loss, and vaporizes Yuiitsu's physical body.

Afterward, MISAKA MIKOTO wanders the night, trembling with the knowledge of a new world beyond the "Anti-Magic System Driving Armor." However, a concerned security guard makes her realize she's bleeding from her nose, and she puzzles over the reason. Meanwhile, Kamisato, still revered by his faction's girls despite losing "World Rejecter," realizes their affection was unrelated to his power. Embracing this newfound understanding, he prepares for a final confrontation to return to their normal lives with them. Yuiitsu, who barely survived, vows revenge on Aleister Crowley and accepts his proposal to share the task of "erasing Kamisato Kakeru and MISAKA MIKOTO," which would impact Crowley's plans.

New Testament Volume 16:

On December 7th, Academy City is struck by an unexplained heatwave, and mysterious creatures called "Elements" run rampant. KAMIJO TOUMA, along with Fukiyose Seiri and Pierce Aogami, continue their daily search for water. Rescued by MISAKA MIKOTO, KAMIJO TOUMA is led to Tokiwadai Middle School.

New Testament Volume 17:

On December 9th, Kamisato Kakeru, having reclaimed his right hand from Kihara Yuiitsu, is transported to a new dimension by his own power, "World Rejecter." To escape Kihara Yuiitsu, who controls Kamisato's faction using "World Rejecter" as a shield, KAMIJO TOUMA cooperates with Furean to rescue Kamisato.

New Testament Volume 18:

On December 11th, Motoharu Tsuchimikado and Furean attempt to escape Academy City, but Motoharu Tsuchimikado's sister, Maika Tsuchimikado, is afflicted by Aleister Crowley's magic. To resolve the situation, KAMIJO TOUMA, alongside the Tsuchimikado siblings, Index Librorum Prohibitorum, Othinus, and Karamaru Furean, infiltrate the "Windowless Building," the headquarters of Academy City's Board Chairman. There, following an invitation from a woman claiming to be Mina Mathers, KAMIJO TOUMA experiences the trajectory of "human" Aleister Crowley. He witnesses the death of Aleister's beloved daughter, Lilith—the cause of his hatred for magic—and glimpses the arrow containing the previous Imagine Breaker during the "Battle of Blythe Road." Guided by Mina, KAMIJO TOUMA finally confronts Aleister, learning that Academy City was built for him. He struggles against Aiwass, summoned during their battle, but with the help of those around him, he manages to temporarily dissipate Aiwass. KAMIJO TOUMA finally defeats Aleister.

After KAMIJO TOUMA's victory, Laura Stuart appears in the Windowless Building. She reveals her true identity as Coronzon, possessing Aleister's second daughter, "Laura," and, to fulfill a past "contract," kills Aleister with the Sword of Damocles. However, immediately after, "1.083 billion and 9,2867" possibilities hidden within Aleister are unleashed, declaring war on Coronzon. Countless Aleister forces swiftly begin to conquer England and its allied nations. Ultimately, one of these possibilities, a feminized Aleister, makes contact with KAMIJO TOUMA.

Coronzon Arc (Volumes 19-22 Reverse)

New Testament Volume 19:

Aleister Crowley launches the Windowless Building, with Coronzon aboard, into space. Aiwass then appears, allowing Mina to escape the building back to Earth before engaging Coronzon in battle in space. To counter Coronzon's threat, who manipulates the "A.O. Francisca" (a medium based on Karamaru Furean) from space to seize control of Academy City, KAMIJO TOUMA and the feminized Aleister begin to work together.

Meanwhile, Hamazura Shiage inexplicably finds himself clad in an unidentified protective suit, the "Processor Suit," and targeted by Accelerator and another figure in a similar suit, the mysterious "A.O. Francisca." He discovers a mysterious baby named Lilith and reunites with Takitsubo, but Lilith suddenly develops a fever. At the hospital he takes her to, he finds medical databases inaccessible, realizing his Processor Suit is the cause. The suit is actually the Academy City's integrated database, the "Bank." "A.O. Francisca," one of Coronzon's mediums, had stolen the Processor Suit to take over Academy City and put a spare suit on Hamazura as a decoy. However, an unintended SIM conflict occurred between the suits, and the spare suit (Hamazura) became a target. Accelerator, who had quickly noticed this anomaly, pursues "his own ability-reproducing suit" and Francisca—the source of the commotion—and encounters Mina, engaging her in battle. Later, he suggests to Hamazura, who mistakenly believed Lilith was the anomaly's core, that their understandings differ.

Hamazura, cornered by Francisca, is saved by Lilith, who exhibits a mysterious power. Through the wooden doll she controls, she introduces herself as "Nuit Ma Asanour Hecate Sappho Isabella Lilith" and speaks to her absent "father," Aleister Crowley. Later, she is reunited with her father, and Aleister holds his beloved daughter in his arms for the first time in a century.

Mina rescues the automatically writing Index Librorum Prohibitorum who appeared as an enemy before KAMIJO TOUMA, while Aleister saves Furean, who had been made Coronzon's medium. It seems the threats surrounding Academy City have been momentarily averted. However, Coronzon, having defeated Aiwass, then causes the Windowless Building, which was moving in outer space, to fall towards Academy City. This, however, was a trap set by Aiwass and Aleister; the Windowless Building actually crashed into the "New World."

Aleister Crowley then declares the "Freezing of Academy City" and the "Recapture of his other daughter (Laura), who was made a medium," targeting Coronzon, who had returned from the New World.

New Testament Volume 20:

Aleister Crowley, abandoning Academy City, launches a full-scale assault on London to uncover the weaknesses of the Great Demon Coronzon.

New Testament Volume 21:

KAMIJO TOUMA, Accelerator, and Aleister Crowley arrive at Westminster Abbey's cemetery. There, they behold Mathers, the man Aleister Crowley supposedly severed at the fated Blythe Road a century ago.

New Testament Volume 22:

The Great Demon Coronzon reveals her true form and defeats Aleister Crowley. The fate of the world now rests on KAMIJO TOUMA, Accelerator, and Hamazura Shiage.

New Testament Volume 22 Reverse:

After the battle with Coronzon, KAMIJO TOUMA, Index Librorum Prohibitorum, MISAKA MIKOTO, and Shokuhō Misaki are invited to a celebration at Windsor Castle. Amidst the festivities, a dragon suddenly attacks Windsor Castle. From within the dragon emerges another KAMIJO TOUMA.

Genesis Testament

Genesis Testament Volume 2:

KAMIJO TOUMA wakes up in a hospital, only to find himself overwhelmed by a rush of care from beautiful girls. Meanwhile, MISAKA MIKOTO and Shokuhō Misaki, realizing Anna's intentions, team up for a common goal.

Genesis Testament Volume 3:

Teleport is tasked with "Operation Name: Handcuffs," a plan to dismantle all of Academy City's "Dark Sides." The key to breaking the deadlock lies in the mysterious phrase, "Academy City's Greatest Taboo."

Genesis Testament Volume 4:

Escaping his hospital bed, KAMIJO TOUMA finds himself in Los Angeles, which, despite its normally warm climate, has become bitterly cold and completely devoid of its population. Under these abnormal circumstances, caused by Anna and her R&C Occultics, KAMIJO TOUMA and Index Librorum Prohibitorum embark on a mission to solve the incident. Evading attacking enemy magicians, they encounter the sole survivor: a young girl with silver hair and tanned skin, along with "traces" of her mother.

Genesis Testament Volume 5:

During the winter break, in Academy City at year-end, KAMIJO TOUMA wakes up one morning to find a mysterious blonde girl named Alice in his blanket. Then, chaos erupts. An armored train, carrying survivors of the "Dark Side" destroyed by "Handcuffs," crashes, unleashing dangerous prisoners. The battle escalates, revealing the true terror of the "Dark Side." However, KAMIJO TOUMA and his friends, unaware of the full danger, instinctively reach out to help none other than the fiercely dangerous Hanafu Youen.

Genesis Testament Volume 6:

On December 31st, the perpetually unlucky KAMIJO TOUMA, enticed by his reliable senior Seria Kumokawa, takes a part-time job in Shibuya. In this unfamiliar environment, Aradia, an extraordinary witch believed to be Alice's comrade, attacks him, targeting his very life. Amidst the Shibuya bustle and a fleeting隙 (gap), Aradia's right hand seemingly destroys KAMIJO TOUMA's body, completing his assassination. However, in that precise moment, he is rescued by a stunning, sexy woman calling herself Bologna Succubus. Led by her, a hellish escape begins.

Genesis Testament Volume 7:

On January 1st, after an "unlucky" New Year's Eve, KAMIJO TOUMA decides to start fresh with a visit to a shrine. While enjoying food stalls in the Twelfth District, a hub of myths and religions, he reunites with MISAKA MIKOTO in a kimono and Shokuhō Misaki, among other troublesome girls from Tokiwadai, to offer prayers at the shrine. There, KAMIJO TOUMA resolves to locate the headquarters of the "Bridge Builder Society," which is subtly cornering Academy City. He realizes he can achieve this with the tracking device Seria Kumokawa placed on Bologna Succubus.

Genesis Testament Volume 8:

KAMIJO TOUMA, having accidentally shielded his enemy, the "Embodiment of Malice" Anna, finds himself in an unprecedented predicament. He faces three overwhelming "threats": Mutou Tebe, the "Bridge Builder Society's" assassin for transcendent beings; Academy City, now managed by its new Governing Board Chairman, Accelerator; and Anna's sworn enemy, Kingsford. Yet, Anna herself remains surprisingly composed. She's not just escaping; she seems to have a secret, game-changing plan—a scheme only a "wicked woman" could devise. The true objective of the "Bridge Builder Society" is about to be revealed.

Genesis Testament Volume 9:

Magic Gods, transcendent beings, espers, and magicians—all are surpassed by Christian Rosenkreutz (CRC). This silver-haired young man, possessing terrifying power, effortlessly annihilates even the formidable Alice. He strides through Academy City as if a natural disaster, trampling people underfoot. His relentless advance is aimed at assassinating Anna Sprengel, who sleeps in the Frog Doctor's hospital. KAMIJO TOUMA cannot abandon the girl who was once his enemy. Never. In this desperate situation, KAMIJO TOUMA stands before CRC, clenching his fist.

Genesis Testament Volume 10:

Alice Anotherbible, a girl who should have been dead, is resurrected in an unexpected form, throwing Index Librorum Prohibitorum into crisis. However, she manages to escape with Othinus, successfully relaying the danger to the hospitalized KAMIJO TOUMA. Hearing Othinus's account, KAMIJO TOUMA clenches his fist once more.

Genesis Testament Volume 11:

KAMIJO TOUMA stood still, powerless, to save Alice. But her life activities had already ceased. On the last day of winter break, a certain boy in Academy City is confirmed dead. Void. A space of nothingness. When KAMIJO TOUMA awakens, a woman, Anna Kingsford, descends before him. A surprised KAMIJO TOUMA hears a certain proposal.

Apocrypha Library

This collection compiles various special bonus novels.

Kaori Kanzaki Arc:

This long-form side story, originally titled "A Certain Magical Index SS" and included as a bonus with the Blu-ray/DVD limited edition of the anime A Certain Scientific Railgun, stars Kaori Kanzaki.

It's an anthology-style narrative where Kaori Kanzaki, a Jeans Shop Owner, and a Tour Guide Girl travel the world, resolving various magical troubles. Each episode's beginning provides an overview of the incident as an investigation request (except for Episode 8). All incidents involve matters related to Norse Mythology, which also forms the subtitle of each episode.

Episode 1: "Gleipnir, Where Restraint Leads": Kaori Kanzaki, the Jeans Shop Owner, and the Tour Guide Girl are tasked with finding the missing restraint artisan, Eraser. Following his trail, they hear about Seacher. Further investigation reveals Eraser's plan to attack St. Julian's Cathedral and his intricate connection with Seacher and the Bishop of St. Julian's Cathedral. Kaori Kanzaki thwarts Eraser's plot, confronts him about his misconceptions, and defeats him.

Episode 2: "When Will We Graduate from the South Seas? Ymir's Ocean": Instructed to search for a magician and prevent a large-scale magic ritual on the isolated Apple Hill Island in Micronesia, Kaori Kanzaki and her companions investigate, uncovering the history of conflicts with neighboring islands. Kaori Kanzaki then confronts a girl around 10 years old, referred to as "Crimson Flood," at a suspicious reef site. She overcomes the girl's magic by exploiting its characteristics. After the battle, Kaori Kanzaki tries to persuade the girl to leave the island but, understanding the deep-rooted problems of the island and the girl's stance, leaves without capturing her.

Episode 3: "The True Meaning of Environmental Protection: Rulic Letters": Ordered to prevent destructive magical activities, Kaori Kanzaki and her team go to a large ironworks in an industrial area of a Danish port city. While investigating traces of enemy runes, explosions suddenly erupt in various locations. Kaori Kanzaki manages to prevent the worst, then deduces the enemy magician, Reasick's location from the magic's mechanism, catches up to him, and captures him. Hearing Reasick's self-serving claims, Kaori Kanzaki quietly seethes with anger and defeats him.

Episode 4: "Various Lives: Alfarr": Kaori Kanzaki is tasked with reclaiming the Brick Wharf, a crucial Anglican Church stronghold in northern Scotland, which has been occupied by Alfarr. After hearing details from Slapper, Kaori Kanzaki bypasses the Brick Wharf's defensive magic and infiltrates alone. She encounters and confronts Alfarr, questioning his true intentions. The truth of the incident gradually comes to light through Alfarr's story and Slapper's revealed true nature. After defeating and capturing Slapper, Kaori Kanzaki and her team safely relocate Alfarr to an appropriate facility.

Episode 5: "Oceanic Prison: Naglfar": One of the submarine-type giant facilities for housing and transporting dangerous enemy magicians worldwide, the Oceanic Prison, goes out of control while sailing in the Indian Ocean. Kaori Kanzaki and her team disregard orders from high command for a massacre solution and investigate to peacefully regain control, eventually discovering that the "Naglfar" legend is being used to seize control. Kaori Kanzaki and her team directly board the Oceanic Prison to dispel the magic, but a female colleague magician, "Veidar's Shoe Woman," appears, intending to carry out the high command's orders. Kaori Kanzaki engages her in an offshore battle to stop her, sees through the weakness of her magical artifact, and defeats her. She then warns the Oceanic Prison's inmates, intimidating them into surrender with her sheer presence.

Episode 6: "The Best Moment: Bifrost": Kaori Kanzaki, receiving news of the tracked magician Orenz Torais's stronghold, heads to the location. Upon infiltration, she encounters Leivinia and Mark, but due to the peculiar nature of the transport container they are in, they are forced to a temporary ceasefire. Kaori Kanzaki and Leivinia, whose personalities clash, find their animosity and irritation growing despite Mark's attempts to mediate. Upon the container's arrival, the two, reaching their breaking point, engage in a fierce battle, casually defeating Orenz, who was waiting for them, as collateral damage.

Episode 7: "The Destination of Salvation: Gungnir": Investigating a series of attacks on five major Norse Mythology-affiliated magic societies by a mysterious culprit, Kaori Kanzaki and her team deduce the possibility of a Saint's involvement from the crime scenes. They then preemptively ambush the next predicted attack site, encountering Brynhildr Eiktobel, a Saint and Valkyrie. Kaori Kanzaki and Brynhildr clash, but Brynhildr, realizing her disadvantage, escapes. Afterward, Kaori Kanzaki and her team question the magician victims, asking one, Seturua, about Brynhildr. At that moment, Brynhildr interrupts their conversation with a provocation. Kaori Kanzaki triangulates her location using the communication magic and rushes to the site.

Episode 8: "The One Who Delivers the Hidden Script: Valkyrie": Kaori Kanzaki arrives at the secluded abandoned factory where Brynhildr is, engaging her in a fierce battle. However, she struggles against "Gungnir" and the "Last Rune," forced to retreat and regroup. A communication from the Jeans Shop Owner reveals the existence of Seilie Flatley, a boy who seems to be Brynhildr's motive. Despite Brynhildr interfering with the communication and provocatively interrupting, Kaori Kanzaki tries to persuade her of the futility of her actions based on her own experiences, but to no avail. The two begin their final confrontation, with Kaori Kanzaki ultimately emerging victorious. Later, Kaori Kanzaki and her team discover the plot of Richard's faction, who are targeting Seilie, and head to the location to thwart their scheme.

Official Parody Spin-offs

These works are all official parody gag stories, with no direct chronological or story connection to the main series. They often contain strong meta-fictional elements, with characters referencing the series' settings or even the series itself.

A Certain School Index Librorum Prohibitorum:

This parody spin-off re-imagines the characters in a "school life" setting, incorporating numerous elements from adventure games. It humorously features Accelerator disguised as Suzushina Yuriko, a character KAMIJO TOUMA idly imagined in volume 6. The characters and descriptions are based on the setting at the time of volume 6's publication.

KAMIJO TOUMA wakes up to find everyone around him acting strangely. He learns that for some reason, Academy City has been subjected to "rules," and everyone must play a role as a character in a school life story. Various individuals, from those acting normally or with somewhat related roles to those forced into exaggerated personas, gather around KAMIJO TOUMA, leading to chaotic events.

A Certain Magical Index? A Certain March Gift Exchange & A Certain March 201st Volume:

These parody spin-offs revolve around White Day and a graduation ceremony. As works published in "Dengeki BUNKOYOMI" were themed according to their respective months, these stories align with March. While not strictly connected to the main story, they are loosely set several months to years after, with any intervening events summarily dismissed as "various things happened." The characters and descriptions align with the period around volume 11's publication.

A Certain March Gift Exchange: This White Day-themed parody highlights KAMIJO TOUMA's propensity for attracting romantic flags with women.

On March 14th, KAMIJO TOUMA, spending his day as usual, is inexplicably demanded "Valentine's Day returns" by various women around him, with no recollection of giving anything. It's eventually revealed that a month prior, convinced he "wouldn't get any chocolates anyway," he got drunk and, in a fit of delusion, wandered around the world, making countless women fall for him, all while blackout drunk. Plagued by these unexpected consequences of his unconscious actions, KAMIJO TOUMA laments his misfortune.

A Certain March 201st Volume: This graduation-themed parody plays on the series' extensive volume count, exploring graduation scenarios that are typically not featured in the main story.

In March, KAMIJO TOUMA and his fellow third-year students celebrate their graduation, reflecting on their long school days. After the ceremony, KAMIJO TOUMA wonders about his post-graduation path. He is immediately bombarded with conflicting recruitment offers—from the "Necessarius," to becoming a "Judgment" officer, and various other individuals—leaving him utterly confused.

I Hate the First Episode of "A Certain Magical Index"!! Or I Hate the Final Episode!!:

As the title suggests, this parody spin-off focuses on "imaginary first or final episodes." "Dengeki h&p" typically divides into "h (hajimari/beginning) part" for "I Hate the First Episode" and "p (period) part" for "I Hate the Final Episode." However, this work is titled "? (hatena/question) part," intentionally ambiguous. Within the story, characters try to deduce if it's the first or final episode. This piece is the most meta of the parody spin-offs, featuring an utterly chaotic plot. The characters and descriptions are based on the setting around volume 14's publication.

On July 19th, KAMIJO TOUMA and MISAKA MIKOTO confront each other on a railway bridge in the 7th District, attempting to recreate the scene from Volume 1. However, Kaori Kanzaki suddenly intervenes, suggesting that this might actually be the world of the final volume, "July 19th, one year after Volume 1." As MISAKA MIKOTO and Kaori Kanzaki unleash a fierce battle, raging about the lack of proper screentime for their characters, KAMIJO TOUMA systematically tries to determine if this world is truly the first or final volume.

One day, Seria Kumokawa visits KAMIJO TOUMA's classroom to find him absent. She entrusts Fukiyose Seiri with a love letter for him. The love letter then passes through the hands of various characters.

Organizations and Groups

British Puritan Church: This is a faction of Christianity. It encompasses various groups, including the combat organization "Necessarius," the Amakusa-style Remix Church, and the Agnes Squad, with many magicians belonging to it.

Roman Orthodox Church: This is the largest Christian denomination, a massive force of 2 billion followers led by the Pope. Beyond its numerical strength and historical magical artifacts, it harbors its deepest and true highest organization, known as the "God's Right Seat."

The world of "A Certain Magical Index" initially appears similar to our reality but is imbued with magic and superpowers. This creates two dominant factions: the "Science Side," focused on scientific technology, and the "Magic Side," rooted in magical practices.

Science Side

Academy City is a collective of scientific organizations. In a broader sense, it refers to modern society as a whole that utilizes scientific technology, but in practice, the term "Science Side" largely denotes Academy City itself, as outside areas have only shallow involvement. Unlike the Magic Side, the Science Side has no other organizations equal to Academy City, which effectively reigns as its dominant stronghold.

Academy City is a fully independent educational and research institution located in western Tokyo. It possesses advanced scientific technology, decades ahead of the outside world. It conducts scientific research on superpowers, creating Espers through brain development. Beyond Esper abilities, it holds various futuristic over-technologies and next-generation weapons. Most ordinary residents of Academy City are unaware of magic's existence, but the upper echelons and parts of the dark side, including the Board Chairman Aleister Crowley, are aware of the Magic Side and maintain diplomatic relations with it.

Magic Side

The Magic Side is a collection of various organizations, including magical groups and magic departments operated by religious organizations, all operating in secret. Since magic itself is generally kept hidden from the public, its existence is mostly unknown to the Science Side and general society.

Existing in the shadows of the world since ancient times when magic first emerged, the Magic Side possesses a rich history. In contrast to the Science Side, which is dominated by Academy City, the Magic Side consists of multiple influential organizations with opposing goals and agendas, far from being unified. In fact, conflicts within the Magic Side are common, such as clashes between various Christian denominations or between Christian factions and magical societies. Moreover, due to magicians' unique beliefs, many prioritize personal matters over organizational loyalty, and some operate independently.

Unlike the Science Side and general society, most individuals on the Magic Side do not live conventional lifestyles (e.g., attending school or working) but pursue their own unique objectives. While Magic Side individuals use scientific technology for essential daily needs (like mobile phones or airplanes), they tend to avoid or dislike scientific norms, ideologies, and Academy City's advanced technology. Some even struggle with basic scientific devices.

Relationship Between the Two Sides

The Science Side and Magic Side are fundamentally incompatible and often in conflict. Technical information regarding science and magic is monopolized by each side and considered mutually exclusive; research into the opposing side's technology or direct combat between the two sides is forbidden. Both sides have established boundaries and agreements to avoid encroaching on each other's territory, with penalties imposed on those who cross the line. However, as long as these agreements are upheld, their relationship remains relatively stable, without overt conflict. When common enemies or problems arise and their interests align, they sometimes cooperate, sharing information, etc. The balance of power is believed to be evenly maintained, partly due to the Magic Side's lack of a unified front.

Espers and Magic

In the world of this series, superpowers (Espers) and magic are distinctly separate entities. Esper abilities are "scientific" phenomena developed artificially by modifying brain structures, categorized into precise levels and types. In contrast, magic is an "occult" phenomenon generated using religious laws and traditions, existing in diverse systems based on rituals and methods. As seen by the restriction preventing Espers from using magic, the two are fundamentally incompatible.

World Structure and Concepts

As supernatural phenomena genuinely exist in this world, divine, high-tier beings such as Gods, angels, and spirits are real, as are other worlds like Heaven and Hell, believed to reside in "alternate phases" with different wavelengths, making them difficult to perceive. Concepts like souls also exist, and some mythological events are treated as historical facts. Yet, simultaneously, it is a world governed by scientific laws, so the Earth, universe, and DNA structure, of course, also exist.

General Side

This refers to general society and nations outside Academy City and the Magic Side. These societies enjoy modern life supported by scientific technology from Academy City, while also belonging to religions and indirectly involved in the Magic Side's power struggles, often unknowingly. Thus, they are the "others" who are influenced by both sides but deeply committed to neither.

Regarding nations, many do not recognize magic and are generally counted as part of the Science Side (e.g., the United States and Japan). However, in some cases (e.g., England and France), the core of the state is deeply involved with the Magic Side or explicitly recognizes its existence.

Other Differences from the Real World

Aside from the aforementioned, the world of the series is largely identical to the real world, though there are some differences in national systems and social conditions. In-universe history also sometimes features magical elements woven into historical events, notable figures connected to magic, or modern history subtly altered by Academy City's influence.

It is unclear what year the story takes place, but based on in-story descriptions and dialogue, it is presumed to be the early 21st century (e.g., Aleister Crowley is officially reported to have died in 1947, and the text mentions "already more than sixty years ago, official reports stated he had died").

Main Series Manga

The main series manga of A Certain Magical Index has been serialized in Square Enix's "Monthly Shonen Gangan" since the May 2007 issue. The artwork is by Chuya Kogino, following the original story by Kazuma Kamachi and character designs by Kiyotaka Haimura.

The story progression in the manga largely mirrors the light novel series. However, it's worth noting that content equivalent to original light novel volumes 2 and 4 has been omitted. The author mentioned in the afterword of manga Volume 2 that this was partly due to popular demand for MISAKA MIKOTO to appear earlier in the story.

Fujishoji (JFJ), a subsidiary of Fujishoji, has released Pachinko and Pachislot machines based on A Certain Magical Index. As of February 25, 2025, including A Certain Scientific Railgun, Fujishoji (though Index Librorum Prohibitorum machines are manufactured by JFJ, they are sold by Fujishoji) has introduced 6 Pachinko models and 3 Pachislot models.

*P A Certain Magical Index*: The 319-version from JFJ was released in November 2020, followed by the 129-version Light PREMIUM ver. in March 2022. The 319-version is a mid-spec machine with a jackpot probability of 1/319, while the Light PREMIUM ver. (1/129) has a lighter jackpot probability and added effects. Both are ST machines with a 100% rush (probability variation) entry rate, meaning a jackpot guarantees entry into ST mode. While primarily using footage from the A Certain Magical Index III anime, it also includes numerous newly animated scenes specifically for this machine.

*Smart Slot A Certain Magical Index*: Released by JFJ in November 2023, this is a Smart Slot machine. It increases payouts through a "Gensou Goroshi RUSH" (Imagine Breaker RUSH) AT (Assault Time) system managed by the number of medals. Like its Pachinko counterpart, the visuals are based on the anime but include new, original scenes not found in the anime or light novel (such as KAMIJO TOUMA VS Teitoku Kakine, MISAKA MIKOTO VS Teitoku Kakine, etc.).

*P A Certain Magical Index 2*: The 319-version from JFJ was released in January 2024 as the successor to *P A Certain Magical Index*. It features new effects, songs, and a revamped spec. While the previous model offered a stable 100% ST entry, this new version has a 70% ST entry rate. However, it introduces jackpots that allow for a larger payout at once, shifting from a stable to a more volatile output performance.

*P A Certain Magical Index 2 Light PREMIUM 2000 ver.*: This is the sweet spot version of *P A Certain Magical Index 2*, released in January 2024. It is the first machine in the series to feature a Lucky Trigger. While the normal jackpot probability is increased to 1/99, the ST entry and continuation rates are lower compared to the mid-spec version (ST entry rate 50%, continuation rate approx. 65%). However, approximately 11% of jackpots during right-side play trigger the "Strongest Domain" (Lucky Trigger), the machine's biggest feature, boosting the continuation rate from around 65% to approximately 91%, significantly increasing continuous payout potential. The visuals are based on the mid-spec version of Index 2 but include many new effects. For example, the "Dragon Strike" (Ryuuou no Ago) prediction, a highly anticipated effect for jackpots, and existing effects like "Spell Intercept" (Kyousei Eishou) prediction and "Railgun" (Choudenjigou) prediction have been revamped. In the custom mode, players can choose a "Saki Rorirori Mode" featuring Index Librorum Prohibitorum, Last Order, Komoe Tsukuyomi, Birdway, and Frenda. Each character has different activation conditions, not only indicating jackpot expectations but also notifying of ST jackpots. In the ST mode, "A Certain Magical Strongest Clash" (Heroes RUSH & Strongest Domain), in addition to "Index Librorum Prohibitorum Mode," "Railgun Mode," "Accelerator Mode," and "Heroine Mode," a new "Heroine Nap Mode" has been added. If the heroine wakes up, it's a jackpot, and players can choose from Index Librorum Prohibitorum, MISAKA MIKOTO, Lesser, Oriana Thomson, and Major Heart. Furthermore, the machine features an original song, "Real," sung by Yuka Iguchi, specially written for this model.

The series is featured in "Dengeki Bunko Recitation Tried It," a project where voice actors recite Dengeki Bunko novels. A recitation by Yuka Iguchi for A Certain Magical Index, lasting about 7 and a half minutes, was released on July 20, 2021.
