SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist is a light novel series by Akagi Hirotaka, illustrated by Eito Shimotsuki.

The story is set in a near-future Japan, where laws have completely banned all lewd jokes and sexual talk.

Our protagonist, Tanukichi Okuma, joins a prestigious school, only to find himself drawn into a rebellious underground movement spreading "forbidden" dirty jokes.

The series is famous for its witty, outrageous humor, clever satire of censorship, and unforgettable cast—including the iconic "Blue Snow", Ayame Kajou.

It has been adapted into manga and anime, and is loved for blending riotous comedy with sharp social commentary.

The series was awarded the Excellent Prize in the 6th Shogakukan Light Novel Awards.

Akagi Hirotaka crafted the idea as a satire on censorship and a playful commentary on modern morality.

The publication ran from 2012 to 2016 under Gagaga Bunko, inspiring manga adaptations and a 2015 TV anime.

Its originality, gutsy comedy, and willingness to go where few stories dared made it an instant cult favorite.

Set 16 years after the "Law for Public Morals and Proper Social Conduct" banned all sexual speech and expression in Japan.

Every citizen wears a device called the "Peace Maker" (PM), which monitors language, gestures, and attempts to create or spread any forbidden content.

Because of these harsh rules, teenagers grow up clueless about biology and sex, sometimes not even knowing how reproduction works.

This dystopian society has led to an underground explosion of resistance—characters risk everything to reintroduce "dirty jokes" back into daily life.

The world is a wild blend of strict surveillance, clueless youth, and a few brave (or crazy) freedom fighters.

Tanukichi Okuma, son of the infamous lewd terrorist Zenjuro Okuma, enrolls at Tokioka Academy hoping to get closer to his pure-hearted crush, Anna Nishikinomiya.

He ends up entangled with Ayame Kajou, the vice president of the student council—who is secretly the masked lewd terrorist "Blue Snow."

Forced into Ayame’s underground group "SOX," Tanukichi quickly finds himself organizing outlandish "dirty joke" terror attacks, dodging relentless government censors.

Meanwhile, Anna transforms into a delusional, aggressive force of nature after falling for Tanukichi, not understanding her own desires thanks to the lack of sexual education.

Other unforgettable allies and rivals emerge, including Otome Saotome, a pint-sized artistic genius who longs to paint explicit art, and Hyouka Fuwa, a mad scientist obsessed with how pregnancy works.

The cast battles against the oppressive morals police, defends freedom of expression, and, always, finds creative ways to unleash chaos in a "boring" world.

Law for Public Morals and Proper Social Conduct:

A draconian law that outlaws any sexual material and even basic sexual education, enforced by the "Peace Makers" everyone must wear.

Break the rules, and you're punished immediately.

Peace Maker (PM):

A futuristic monitoring system—a collar and wristband combo—that flags and reports any "dirty" words, gestures, or even artistic creations.

To escape detection, rebels use wordplay, academic terms, or clever loopholes.

The PM system lies at the center of the dystopian surveillance state.

SOX:

The notorious underground group, led by Ayame Kajou, devoted to breaking the monotony with lewd joke terrorism.

Membership is unpredictable, and their methods range from childish pranks to epic public stunts.

H Ban Law:

A proposed legislation to further clamp down on sexuality—would have required devices to monitor people’s genitals, essentially a governmentally enforced chastity belt!

This law is eventually scrapped due to its extreme nature.

Hell Sound:

A maximum-security prison where the worst "lewd criminals" are kept—yes, including our heroes at some points.

Light Novels: 12 volumes (11 main story, 1 short story collection), released between 2012 and 2016.

Manga: "SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist - Man● Arc" was serialized from 2014 to 2016, spanning 4 volumes.

Anime: A 12-episode TV adaption by J.C.STAFF aired from July to September 2015, known for its bold visuals and irreverent style.

The anime was directed by Yohei Suzuki with series composition by Masahiro Yokotani.

Character designs were handled by Masahiro Fujii, and music composed by Shuuhei Mutsuki.

It aired on AT-X, Tokyo MX, BS11, among others, often with additional censorship to meet broadcast standards.

Voice talent included Yusuke Kobayashi (Tanukichi), Shizuka Ishigami (Ayame), Miyu Matsuki (Anna), Satomi Arai (Otome), and Saori Gotou (Hyouka).

Sadly, Miyu Matsuki, Anna's voice actress, passed away shortly after the anime's airing, making this her last major anime role.

Opening Theme: "B-Chiku Sentai SOX" performed by the SOX voice cast—it's a riotous, tongue-in-cheek song matching the series’ playful spirit.

Ending Theme: "Inner Urge" by Sumire Uesaka, featuring energetic pop with cheeky lyrics.

  • Won an Excellent Prize in the 6th Shogakukan Light Novel Awards.
  • Radio program "The Boring Radio Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist" won the "BEST SEXY RADIO Erotic Radio Award (Newcomer Division)" at the 2nd Aniraji Awards.

Praised for its boldness, inventive premise, and fearless joking about taboo topics.

Critics noted the genius use of body fluids in animation—strangely both absurd and visually impactful!

Despite its extreme comedy, the series was recognized for social satire about censorship and freedom of speech.

It became a cult hit among anime fans who loved its blend of slapstick, satire, and unique character dynamics.

The series inspired discussion regarding freedom of expression, censorship, and the significance of open sexual education in society.

With memorable characters, outrageous jokes, and clever worldbuilding, SHIMONETA remains a benchmark for daring comedy in anime and light novels.
