Character Setting

Edit

Tsurara Halestone is a small, extremely powerful ice mage and one of the Divine Visionaries, bearing the title of Ice Cane, and serving as Director of the Magic Research Administration Bureau in *Mashle: Magic and Muscles*.

Name: Tsurara Halestone

Gender: Female

Affiliation: Magic Research Administration Bureau (Director), Divine Visionary

Divine Visionary Title: Ice Cane

Age: 20

Birthday: February 2

Height: 152 cm

First Appearance: Volume 5 (manga)

Voice Actor (Anime): Tomori Kusunoki (Japanese)

Tsurara Halestone is one of the mages chosen by God, known as a Divine Visionary, who specializes in ice magic.

Despite commanding terrifying ice powers, she is ironically very sensitive to cold and constantly complains about how freezing she feels.

She has an innate body condition where her perceived temperature is always about minus 5 degrees Celsius.

Because of this, she is usually bundled up in heavy clothing, even when indoors.

Her first appearance is during the emergency interrogation regarding Mash Burnedead’s concealed magic deficiency.

Summoned alongside other Divine Visionaries, she shows almost no interest in the proceedings and focuses more on how cold she feels.

After a long absence from the story, she returns in volume 13 with a dramatic combat showcase.

She freezes and annihilates a group of invading monsters, including a centaur-type creature and its followers, in an instant.

However, she is later defeated by Epidem, the third son of Innocent Zero, without her battle being properly shown on-panel.

She is killed once, then displayed crucified in midair with the other defeated Divine Visionaries, before eventually being revived due to Innocent Zero’s magic.

Tsurara’s defining gag is that she is constantly cold and never stops saying so.

Her repeated lines such as “Ugh, cold” and “So… so cold…” highlight her chronic discomfort.

She openly complains about her own ice magic, saying things like “I really hate my magic, it’s seriously cold” and wishing she had a warm element like fire instead.

This self-deprecating attitude gives her a humorous contrast to the usual “cool” ice mage archetype.

Despite her authority as a bureau director and Divine Visionary, she often comes across as listless and disinterested.

Her laid-back, almost apathetic reactions make her stand out among the more serious or intense Divine Visionaries.

Her gender was debated among readers for some time due to her androgynous design and bundled clothing.

It was later confirmed that Tsurara is a girl through the program “MASH RADIO.”

From a meta perspective, Tsurara is often considered one of the most unfortunate characters in the series.

Her appearances are sparse, and when she finally gets screentime, the narrative tends to treat her roughly.

After her debut, she disappears from the story for a long stretch.

When she finally returns, she demonstrates overwhelming power, but then quickly becomes a victim of comedic and off-screen misfortune.

At one point she slips on her own ice, falls, and suffers heavy bleeding, turning her incredible abilities into a slapstick hazard.

Soon after, she is used as a “jobber” or sacrificial example, being instantly defeated by Epidem without even getting a proper fight scene.

In front of the nation’s citizens, she and the other Divine Visionaries are shown crucified in the sky, a humiliating symbol of their defeat.

Considering her rank and title, this string of events makes her treatment feel especially harsh and “too unfair” compared to her status.

Tsurara is notably short at 152 cm, making her likely the smallest among the Divine Visionaries and possibly the shortest of the major cast.

Her petite size, combined with her heavy winter clothing, often makes her look even smaller and more compact.

She wears an eyepatch over her right eye, decorated with a snowflake pattern.

On her head she wears a beret-like hat, adding to her cozy, bundled-up aesthetic.

Due to her severe sensitivity to cold, Tsurara is almost always in thick clothing and a scarf, even when indoors.

Her outfit gives her a layered, winter-ready silhouette that visually reinforces her element.

Her hair has a gradient coloration similar to Abel Walker’s, with longer straight strands that are somewhat hidden by her bulky clothes.

She also has two distinctive parallel, angular marks under her left eye, which resemble two squared-off lines.

The eyepatch is particularly notable in-universe: according to Kaise TSUKKOMI, anyone who brings it up risks being frozen solid by her.

This implies it covers something deeply personal, and fans often speculate it conceals a special magical eye, possibly similar to Abyss Razor’s Evil Eye or another type of magic eye.

Ice Magic

Tsurara is an ice-element mage with a powerful, yet unnamed ice magic.

Her spells allow her to freeze wide areas and enemies with overwhelming efficiency.

She is capable of freezing entire groups of enemies instantly, as shown when she annihilates a monster unit, including a centaur-like creature called Parto Tort, along with its followers.

The frozen targets eventually crumble apart after some time, indicating that her freezing can lead to complete structural collapse.

The freezing effect seems to originate from contact points with herself or her magic, spreading outward rapidly.

Some aspects of her freezing seem to trigger almost automatically, suggesting a partially passive or always-on element to her ability.

Due to the influence of her unique ice magic, her perceived body temperature is constantly minus 5 degrees Celsius.

This biological side effect explains both her constant shivering and her hatred of her own element.

While her magic is devastating in combat, it is also a curse from her point of view.

She openly states that she wishes she had fire or another warm element instead, reflecting a rare case of a top-tier mage disliking her own powers.

Combat Record

In the city invasion incident, Tsurara demonstrates her power by freezing an attacking monster troop in an instant.

This confirms her as someone with Divine Visionary–level combat capabilities.

However, during the counterattack on Innocent Zero’s main base, she faces Epidem, the third son of Innocent Zero.

Her battle is not fully depicted, and she is instead shown already defeated, implying she was swiftly overwhelmed.

She dies once as a result of this defeat, then later appears crucified along with the other Divine Visionaries as part of Innocent Zero’s spectacle.

Subsequently, she is revived through Innocent Zero’s magic, continuing her streak of harsh, almost comedic misfortune.

Tsurara’s first narrative role is as one of the Divine Visionaries called to interrogate Mash Burnedead about his supposed magic.

While others debate and pressure Mash, she shows little interest and complains about the cold, adding a hint of humor to a tense scene.

Later, in volume 13, she finally receives a more active role by confronting monsters that attack the nation.

Her instant victory over them briefly frames her as an overwhelming, reliable defender.

This momentum is quickly undercut when she is defeated off-screen by Epidem in the later arc involving Innocent Zero’s main base.

Her status then shifts from “hidden powerhouse” to “tragically underused and mistreated powerhouse,” which has become part of her charm among fans.

Tsurara’s constant “It’s cold” catchphrases are one of her most recognizable traits and a recurring comedic beat.

She is the epitome of “the ice mage who hates the cold,” a clear subversion of typical element-user stereotypes.

Her right eyepatch is a major source of fan speculation.

Because characters are warned that asking about it might result in being frozen, it is presumed to conceal a secret, possibly a magic eye with dangerous or sorrowful implications.

Fan discussions frequently highlight how underused she is compared to other Divine Visionaries like Rayne Ames or Orter Mádl.

Her brief, intense moments of strength contrasted with humiliating defeats enhance her reputation as a “wasted but lovable” character.

For a long time, her gender was a hot topic among readers due to her small frame, heavy clothes, and neutral fashion.

Her confirmation as a girl on “MASH RADIO” finally settled the debate and cemented her role as a very unfortunate, very cold, but very memorable female Divine Visionary.
