Vice-captain of the 7th Division and President of the Men's Shinigami Association. Despite his tough appearance with sunglasses and speaking in a Hiroshima dialect, he is actually a devoted son and has a strong sense of justice. He refers to himself as "Washi." He was formerly part of the 11th Division, which may explain his occasionally combative nature. According to Ikkaku, he left the 11th Division to pay for the medical expenses of his sick mother, Iba Chitetsu, who was the vice-captain of the 3rd Division 110 years ago. Once, when he drew a picture of Komamura, he lamented that he couldn't capture the dignity and strength with his skills, but his drawing style is surprisingly pop-like. During the battle in the fake Karakura Town in the Arrancar arc, he scolded Ikkaku for not using his Bankai, which led to their defeat by the Arrancar Choe Neng Poww and the destruction of one of the pillars, triggering the transfer reversal. Later, he attempted a surprise attack on Ayon but was countered and received treatment from Kira, only to be cut down by Aizen, who had switched places with Hinamori. In the novel depicting events after his captaincy, he becomes the guardian of young werewolf boys, Uruoi and Shouma, accepting them as apprentices.

All details such as its name, release command, and abilities are unknown, making it a mysterious Zanpakuto. When sealed, it is in the form of a dagger, and upon releasing its abilities, it transforms into a shape with no guard and a branch-like blade in the middle of the wide blade.
