Win Kirifuda is the main character in both the manga and anime Duel Masters WIN, as well as its sequel Duel Masters LOST. He first appears as a cheerful sixth grader who loves playing Duel Masters and has a laid-back, lively personality. As the story progresses, Win grows older, advancing to middle and then high school, continuing his adventures and dueling with remarkable talent. He mainly uses a deck focused on the dark civilization’s Abyss creatures, and is known for his unique way of speaking, adding "tto" to the end of his sentences. Win is a bright and positive boy, but he becomes incredibly sharp and strategic when it comes to dueling, showing both a fun and clever side that makes him stand out among Duel Masters protagonists.
Win Kirifuda is a young boy with a cheerful look.
He is usually seen with a big smile and sparkling eyes.
His clothes match his playful personality, and he has a unique hairstyle that makes him easy to recognize.
Win is usually easy-going, bright, and full of energy.
He enjoys making jokes and often says his catchphrases like “Let’s WIN-tto!” and “My heart is WIN-WIN!”
In serious duels, he suddenly becomes very focused and shows incredible dueling sense.
He is a bit of a sore loser and hates losing, but he is always true to himself and others.
Win also likes to try new things and learns quickly, whether it’s dueling or cooking.
He loves octopus-shaped sausages, which is his favorite food.
Win Kirifuda lives in a small town called Shirahama in Chiba with his father, Papa-rin (Guts Kirifuda), and a sea-lion/octopus called Gen-san.
His mother’s story is still a mystery, since she has never appeared and little is known about her.
When Win’s mom disappeared, Papa-rin came to take care of him, and Win says that’s when Papa-rin became his real dad.
He started out as a sixth-grader, then enters middle school as a first-year student after the "Duel School Arc," and later becomes a high school student in LOST.
Win’s secret strength in dueling comes from his fast learning and ability to get stronger when he is having fun.
He uses a black (dark) Abyss Royal deck, the first Duel Masters hero to use mainly dark civilization cards.
His main cards include Abyssbell = Jashin-King, Evil Dragon Jablad, and Evil Battle Sis.
He often mixes different civilizations in his deck to surprise his opponents.
During duels, Win can read and adapt quickly, predicting his opponent’s moves and turning any card into a winning card.
He even masters cooking quickly by observing others, showing his skills aren’t limited to dueling.
Win is close to Papa-rin, who looks after him like a real father.
He has a magical bond with Jashin-kun, whom he meets during a Duel Masters tournament.
Gen-san, his pet, is always with him.
He faces many rivals and friends, such as Bowie Obachiyama, D4’s Prince Kaiser, and others at Duel School.
He is admired and often surprises even his toughest opponents with his upbeat nature and clever plays.
Win Kirifuda is the first protagonist in the manga’s history not named "Katta" (Katsuta) or related to the classic Katta family.
His name still reads “Kirifuda” (trump card) and “Win” (to win), following the series tradition.
He loves octopus sausages but doesn’t obsess over them like past heroes obsessed over their favorite food.
Unlike most dark civilization users, Win is very bright and cheerful.
He is voiced by Shotaro Uzawa instead of Yumiko Kobayashi, who voiced previous main characters.
At one point, there was an early draft where Win would have been the weakest protagonist—but this was changed in the final version.
- “Let’s WIN-tto!”
- “My heart is WIN-WIN!”
- “My WIN!!”
Elementary School Beginning
Win Kirifuda first appears as a sixth grader living in Shirahama Town with Papa-rin and Gen-san.
He is cheerful and loves playing Duel Masters, often carrying his Bolshack deck to matches.
One day, while hearing the mysterious voice of Jashin-kun, Win enters a local tournament.
He finds that his deck now contains dark Abyss cards, which blend with his Bolshack deck.
During a duel with Bowie Obachiyama, Jashin-King appears in real life, and Win faces a "Jashin Duel" where creatures become real.
Even then, he stays calm and uses Jashin-King’s special ability, defeating Bowie with sharp plays and cool thinking.
Win famously says, “Jashin-King doesn’t die!” while using Bolshack as a cost for Jashin’s indestructible move.
Duel School Arc
After winning the elementary chapter, Win enters Duel School and starts the “Best Duel Masters Club.”
He is not popular at school because the top group D4 opposes him, but Win still defeats strong duelists like Bowie, Fargo, and even Prince Kaiser.
His strategy includes mixing other civilization cards and surprising opponents with unexpected moves.
It is discovered later that Win unconsciously provides dark mana, reviving Jashin-King.
He is warned that handling dark mana is difficult for humans, but instead, Win becomes more eager to duel and get stronger, especially to face Issa, who once beat him.
Win keeps climbing the Duel Wars tournament, reaching the semifinals.
In a big match with Prince Kaiser, their duel ends suddenly when they both faint and the arena is destroyed.
Afterward, Win wakes up in funny ways, like eating super-spicy Duel Mapo Tofu or smelling Gen-san’s fart.
The Opposite Win
In episode 23, Win visits a strange reversed school called Opposite Duel School.
There, another version of Win sits quietly, calls himself “I,” and claims he is weak and leads the “Worst Duel Masters Club” all alone.
This version has no passion for dueling.
Lost Arc
In Duel Masters LOST, Win is now a high schooler living alone in a Tokyo apartment.
He has lost his memories and becomes clumsy, often bumping into people or losing jobs.
At night, with friends, his old lively side pops out.
He only has his Abyss deck left.
Win sometimes shows superhuman skills, and Crysta calls him “Duel Master,” asking him to return to their world.
After reuniting with Jashin, Win defeats Tabula-Rasa, but soon faces threats tied to a Crystal Card and creatures like Barom.
Special Moments
In episode 10, a CG version of Win appears alongside a live-action character called Hollywood the Deputy Boss.
Win once used about 20 different decks, but after meeting Jashin-Kun, he mainly uses the black single-color Abyss Royal deck.
His main strategy is to fill the graveyard early, then use Abyssbell = Jashin-King’s power to summon Abyss creatures from the graveyard for a big attack.
By adding Abyss Mechraid cards, his deck became even stronger in the Duel School arc.
Later, Win uses a black-green deck combining nature and dark powers.
In special duels with no banned cards, he uses cards to summon strong creatures from his graveyard.
Win is different from earlier heroes—he is not from the Katta family and his mother’s story is a mystery.
While Papa-rin looks like Win’s dad, he is actually someone who stepped in to take care of Win after his mother disappeared.
