Gettan was once the upright childhood friend of Yukime, devoted to protecting her village and building a future together.

After a catastrophic raid orchestrated by the Cult of Diablos, he lost everything and transformed into a ruthless, power-obsessed merchant king allied with the cult.

In his youth, Gettan was brave, protective, and strongly committed to justice.

He defended Yukime’s village from hostile tribes and worked side by side with her people to grow their settlement.

The destruction of the village shattered his ideals and plunged him into despair.

From that point, he became consumed by a hunger for power and revenge against anyone who tried to take something from him.

Even after his fall, Gettan retained complex emotions toward Yukime, mixing resentment, guilt, and lingering affection.

He is capable of remorse, as seen in the apology letter he leaves for her despite all he has done.

Gettan belongs to the great wolf tribe and grew up alongside Yukime.

They were close childhood friends, bonded by shared struggles and a mutual dream of developing their settlement.

He helped defend Yukime’s village from enemy tribes, earning trust as a righteous and reliable young leader.

Together with Yukime’s tribe, he contributed to the prosperity of their settlement and promised a shared future.

This hopeful life ended when a bandit group, secretly guided by the Cult of Diablos, attacked.

The assault annihilated the entire settlement, tearing away everything Gettan cared about.

The annihilation of his home drove Gettan into deep despair and a desperate craving for power.

At his lowest point, he accepted the Cult of Diablos’s offer and obtained “Diablos’s Tear,” a substance used in beastkin experiments.

Yukime’s mother tried to stop him from following this dark path.

In response, Gettan killed her, fully crossing the line into villainy.

When Yukime opposed him with the same resolve, he rejected her as no longer a comrade.

He struck her down from behind, inflicting a severe wound and severing their relationship.

At the moment of this confrontation, a man disguised as the “Stylish Bandit Slayer” appeared—actually Cid Kagenou in disguise as Shadow.

Gettan was defeated by this mysterious fighter.

In the web version of the story, Yukime, acting unconsciously, attacked during the chaos and destroyed both of Gettan’s eyes.

He survived the incident but was left completely blind.

Despite his injuries, Gettan clung to life, his hatred and lust for power only sharpened.

Blindness did not weaken his ambition; it redirected it.

Starting with nothing but his will, Gettan climbed up through the brutal world of commerce.

He seized control of Garter Trading Company, effectively stealing the organization and reshaping it to his will.

Under his leadership, Garter Trading Company grew into a great trading house.

This rise showcased his cunning, ruthlessness, and strategic talent as a merchant.

Gettan used his newfound economic influence to cooperate further with the Cult of Diablos.

His obsession with punishing anyone who “took from him” merged with the cult’s goals, making him a dangerous power broker.

At the cult’s command, Gettan targeted Mitsugoshi Company for elimination.

To accomplish this, he united multiple major trading houses into a “Great Merchant Alliance.”

The alliance launched the “Mitsugoshi Encirclement,” a coordinated effort to crush Mitsugoshi’s influence.

Gettan positioned himself as the de facto leader, confident in his strategy and manpower.

However, Cid (as John Smith) and Yukime moved faster than Gettan’s plan.

They scattered counterfeit bills issued by the Great Merchant Alliance throughout the city.

This flood of fake currency triggered a complete collapse of public trust in the alliance.

Gettan’s carefully crafted commercial empire and reputation began to crumble from within.

After the financial collapse, Yukime personally visited Gettan.

The two confronted each other, their shared past and unresolved emotions hanging over the encounter.

Yukime held back during their clash, unable to fully abandon her lingering feelings.

Because of her restraint, Gettan managed to turn the situation around and defeat her in that moment.

Soon after, Cid arrived under the alias “John Smith” and pursued Yukime.

Gettan confronted him and prepared for a decisive battle.

To maximize his power, Gettan consumed “Diablos’s Tear,” triggering a beast transformation.

In his beastkin-enhanced form, he fought John Smith head-on.

Despite this massive power-up, Gettan was completely overrun by John Smith’s superior fists and martial arts.

He was beaten without any real chance to counter, his supposed ultimate strength rendered meaningless.

Near death, Gettan was forced to face the reality of John Smith’s overwhelming strength.

This power stirred memories of the earlier encounter with the Stylish Bandit Slayer.

He sensed a resemblance between John Smith and the mysterious warrior who had defeated him in the past.

In the anime adaptation, he does not realize they are the same person, but the impression of “that strength” lingers.

With his final breath, Gettan entrusted Yukime’s future to John Smith.

He asked him to take care of Yukime, revealing a final spark of concern beneath his hardened exterior.

Gettan died shortly after, his long arc of vengeance ending in defeat and regret.

His passing, however, was not the end of his influence.

Despite his crimes, Gettan carried genuine remorse toward Yukime.

Blind and nearing his end, he wrote an apology letter to her.

In that letter, he acknowledged his wrongs and expressed contrition.

To achieve this, she forged a cooperative relationship with Shadow Garden.

In this way, Gettan’s tragic fall indirectly helped strengthen the alliance against the Cult of Diablos.

His life and death became a catalyst for Yukime’s future path and for the broader war in the shadows.
