Steve Mason

Steve Mason serves as the Director of the FBI when L Lawliet first begins investigating the mysterious killer known as Kira.

At L’s request, Mason authorizes the dispatch of 12 FBI agents to Japan to secretly investigate members of the Japanese police who may be connected to Kira.

All 12 of these agents are eventually killed by Kira.

Their deaths create a major scandal and place severe pressure and fear on Mason as the person who approved the mission.

Frightened of becoming a target of Kira himself and facing heavy criticism for the loss of his agents, Mason decides to terminate the FBI’s cooperation with L.

He also publicly reveals that the FBI had been secretly investigating Japanese police personnel, effectively exposing L’s operation and withdrawing from the joint investigation.

In the second part of Death Note, Steve Mason appears again as a member of the Special Provision for Kira (SPK), the organization formed in the United States to capture Kira.

This time he works under Near, supporting the formation and operations of the SPK.

Mason helps Near gather resources and political backing, functioning as an important supporter in the early stages of the SPK’s existence.

Despite his earlier fear of Kira, he reenters the conflict and aligns himself with Near’s efforts to expose and defeat Kira.

However, Mason ultimately dies at the hands of Mello.

His death underscores how dangerous the struggle around the Death Note remains, even for high-ranking officials.

In the live-action Death Note films, Steve Mason’s role is significantly reduced compared to the original story.

He is used as part of the setup for the FBI agent killings and dies of a heart attack, a method consistent with Kira’s typical style of murder.

While he does not receive as much characterization in the films, his death still serves to highlight Kira’s ability to eliminate even foreign law enforcement officials.

This reinforces the global scope of fear and tension created by Kira’s actions.
