Character Setting

Edit

Reiya Oshima is a fictional character from the series Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok, introduced as a wealthy heiress whose true identity is the goddess of love and fertility, Freyja, sent to assassinate Loki under Odin’s orders.

Reiya Oshima appears to the world as the daughter of an ultra-rich family, living the life of a sheltered high-class girl.

Behind this façade, she is actually the Norse goddess Freyja, acting on the command of Odin.

She is able to see prophetic dreams and uses this ability to foresee Loki’s future fate.

Her involvement with Loki begins as a mission but gradually turns into complicated affection and jealousy.

Reiya is voiced by Rika Komatsu in adaptations where the character is given a voice performance.

She was carefully designed by the creator to visually match Loki’s proportions so she could work as a “same-scale” heroine.

Reiya is introduced as a rich young lady who transfers into Loki’s orbit, seemingly by coincidence.

In reality, she has been sent specifically to kill Loki, who has been exiled from the divine realm.

Odin orders Freyja to take on the identity of Reiya Oshima, impersonating a human girl who is supposed to have already died.

Under this assumed identity, she approaches Loki as part of a divine plot against him.

At first, Reiya functions mainly as a vessel for Freyja, with little awareness of her goddess side.

Over time, however, her own emotions start to surface strongly, especially towards Loki.

Reiya grows progressively fond of Loki, shifting from an unknowing pawn of Odin into someone with genuine feelings.

This emotional evolution makes her role much more than “assassin”; she becomes a key figure in Loki’s personal relationships.

Reiya’s true self is Freyja, the goddess who presides over love and fertility in the Norse pantheon.

In the story, this divine aspect is hidden behind the persona of an ordinary human girl.

Freyja’s power is sealed and can be triggered by a special necklace called Brising, a mystical choker.

When Reiya wears Brising, she transforms into her goddess form, Freyja, with enhanced powers and a very different demeanor.

In Freyja form, she acts decisively and with a clear awareness of her mission to kill Loki.

However, these transformed states do not leave memories behind for Reiya’s human personality.

Because of this, Reiya is often unaware of what she does while she is awakened as Freyja.

This split leads to a tragic dual existence, where one self acts against Loki while the other grows closer to him.

Under normal circumstances, Reiya must put on the Brising necklace to awaken as Freyja.

The necklace functions as both a catalyst and a symbol of her divine identity.

As Reiya’s feelings for Loki grow deeper, an intense emotion similar to jealousy begins to take root in her heart.

When this jealousy towards Loki becomes strong enough, Freyja can awaken even without the Brising necklace.

This emotional-triggered awakening shows how closely Reiya’s human heart is tied to her goddess nature.

Her love, jealousy, and conflict all become fuel for Freyja’s emergence, blurring the line between the two identities.

The more she is drawn to Loki, the more unstable the barrier between Reiya and Freyja becomes.

This makes her both a potential ally and a dangerous threat in Loki’s life.

Reiya’s relationship with Loki is the core of her character arc.

She enters his life as a tool of Odin, yet slowly becomes someone who genuinely cares about Loki’s well-being.

At first, Reiya is innocent and largely unaware of the divine politics surrounding Loki.

Loki sees her as a normal girl, even as her goddess form, Freyja, is plotting his death.

Over time, Reiya’s affection for Loki grows into romantic feelings.

These emotions cause inner turmoil, especially because her other self is supposed to kill him.

Jealousy is a major factor in her development, as Reiya struggles with how important Loki is to others and to the divine realm.

This jealousy becomes so powerful that it literally triggers her transformation into Freyja.

Their relationship is bittersweet, filled with affection, danger, and the constant risk that Freyja will carry out Odin’s command.

In the end, Loki’s decisions about Freyja and the divine realm directly affect whether Reiya can continue to exist.

Eventually, Freyja is returned to the divine realm by Loki, resolving the immediate threat she poses.

However, this act has a severe consequence for Reiya’s human existence.

Because Reiya’s identity is tied to Freyja’s presence in the human world, sending Freyja back causes the Reiya persona to vanish completely.

As a result, Reiya Oshima’s existence is erased, leaving no trace in the mortal world.

This disappearance makes her arc tragically poignant, as the girl who grew to love Loki is effectively sacrificed to restore divine order.

Her absence marks a turning point in the story and deeply influences how Loki views his own connections to humans and gods.

In the third part of the series, titled “New Gods of the New World”, Reiya has a brief appearance in the opening first episode.

This early appearance serves as a bridge between the previous storyline and the new narrative.

After that, she is reincarnated through a contract with Vár, a goddess associated with oaths and contracts.

Through this pact, she is reborn under a new identity: Rin Ichijo.

As Rin Ichijo, she once again encounters Loki, restarting their connection from a new angle.

However, the details of what happens between them in this new life are left with a sense of tension and uncertainty, hinting at further drama.

Her reincarnation highlights the theme that bonds between souls can persist across lives and forms.

Even though Reiya Oshima as such was erased, her essence continues to orbit Loki in a new shape.

According to the creator, Kinoshita, Reiya’s design went through a long and difficult development process.

She was the character who took the most effort to finalize before appearing in the story.

The main reason was visual balance with Loki.

Another heroine, Daidouji Mayura, tended to look like an older “big sister” type when drawn next to Loki.

To correct this, the creator wanted a heroine whose proportions matched Loki’s, making them look like peers.

After many iterations of character design, Reiya Oshima was finally created as the solution.

This design goal explains why Reiya and Loki visually complement each other so well on the page.

Her role as a same-scale heroine makes her stand out both as a romantic interest and as a central figure in the series’ visuals.

Reiya Oshima’s voice is provided by Rika Komatsu in animated adaptations.

Komatsu’s performance emphasizes Reiya’s innocence while also capturing the contrast between her human side and the goddess Freyja.
