Character Setting

Edit

Narugami is a poor male high school student and part-time worker whose true identity is Thor, the Norse god of thunder, appearing in the series Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok.

Despite his divine status and being the second in line to the throne of the Norse gods, he has largely forgotten his godly dignity and lives like a broke human teenager.

Narugami is a classmate of Daidouji Mayura and is outwardly portrayed as a penniless student who constantly takes part-time jobs.

In reality, he is Thor, the thunder god from Norse mythology.

He was originally sent to the human world as an assassin by Odin, tasked with eliminating Loki.

Narugami spent a long time observing Loki, questioning whether Loki’s past crimes truly warranted death and why he himself had to carry out the execution.

After watching Loki and reflecting on their shared history, he ultimately refused to kill him.

He concluded that their long-standing connection mattered more than his mission as Odin’s killer.

Narugami is the son of the supreme god Odin and is the second heir to the throne of the gods, although he is totally unaware of this status.

Because he has become so accustomed to the human world and behaves nothing like a majestic deity, he is mockingly referred to by some Norse gods as a “god of dire poverty.”

Narugami has a stubborn and single-minded personality.

Once he comes up with an idea, he tends to cling to it, which often causes trouble for Loki.

Despite this, Narugami is one of the people Loki trusts the most and functions as his closest partner.

Their relationship is a long, tangled bond that goes back to their days in the world of the gods.

By birth, Loki would technically be Narugami’s step-uncle, since Loki is related to Odin in the divine family tree.

However, rather than acting like relatives, they behave more like bickering friends and reluctant allies.

Narugami’s given name is never revealed in the main story.

Loki calls him “Narugami-kun” as a kind of metaphorical way of referring to him as the thunder god, and this nickname becomes his de facto name.

In a bonus comic drawn by the author, Narugami protests to the creator about not having a first name.

The joke resolution is that he is temporarily labeled “Narugami Usagi,” though this is clearly not meant to be canon.

Narugami has completely blended into human society as a “steel-armed part-timer,” constantly working odd jobs to make ends meet.

His lifestyle is so grounded and un-godlike that his divine origin is easy to forget.

He usually wears a traditional boy’s school uniform, a black stand-collar style.

According to the author, this uniform is modeled after the real-life uniform of a high school in Shizuoka known for its soccer team.

Even when he returns to the world of the gods, Narugami keeps wearing his student uniform.

The contrast between his divine status and his plain school outfit adds to the comedic tone of his character.

Narugami is rarely seen without his wooden sword.

This simple practice sword is affectionately named “Mjolnir,” after the legendary hammer of Thor.

The wooden sword is not originally magical, but it represents Narugami’s identity as Thor and acts like his lifeline.

When Narugami is separated from it, he weakens dramatically and “shrivels up like a withered green onion,” becoming listless and dried out.

Once he gets the wooden sword back into his hands, he recovers almost instantly, regaining his strength and energy.

Because of this, he treats the sword as indispensable and carries it around constantly.

At one point in the story, Baldr forces the real Mjolnir to possess Narugami’s wooden sword.

Baldr also takes control of Narugami’s mind, turning him into a weapon and sending him to attack Loki.

Narugami’s initial wooden sword is destroyed by Loki during this forced confrontation.

Afterward, a second wooden sword appears, given to him as a souvenir by Yamino Ryusuke.

Under Baldr’s manipulation, Narugami fails to kill Loki.

In the end, Baldr, disguised as Odin, reduces Narugami to dust, apparently destroying him.

Later, after Baldr is defeated by Loki, Narugami is revived along with other gods such as Freyr.

Upon his return, he finds himself caught up in a comedic struggle over the royal succession among the gods.

Narugami’s home is described as unimaginably messy and chaotic.

Despite the shocking level of clutter, he somehow remembers where everything is and can locate his belongings within the chaos.

However, he often leaves perishable items lying around unattended.

As a result, food frequently rots in his room, adding an unpleasant side to his living conditions.

This contrast between a divine heritage and extremely sloppy daily habits reinforces his image as a “poverty god.”

He is less like a majestic deity and more like a broke, disorganized college student.

In the earlier parts of Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok, Narugami exists mainly in the human world as Loki’s uneasy ally and Odin’s failed assassin.

His story mixes comedy with moments of genuine loyalty and moral conflict over his mission to kill Loki.

After his apparent destruction at the hands of the Odin-disguised Baldr, Narugami is later revived.

Upon revival, he gets involved in humorous skirmishes over the right to inherit the divine throne alongside Freyr and others.

Even back in the world of the gods, Narugami shows no intention of acting dignified or royal.

He continues to behave like a casual, slightly irresponsible young man in a school uniform.

In the third part of the story, often referred to as “New World of the Gods,” Narugami is officially sent from the world of the gods to act as Loki’s bodyguard.

This marks a shift from would-be assassin to protector, formalizing the trust that had already grown between them.

Narugami takes a part-time job working at a café during this arc.

He still juggles divine duties and human world employment, staying true to his “hardworking part-timer” image.

It is revealed in this part that Narugami has two sons, Magni and Modi.

They describe him as a neglectful parent who abandons housework and childcare, drinks heavily, and goes on wild rampages at home.

These revelations paint Narugami as a deeply flawed but oddly charming father.

His divine family life is dysfunctional, yet it fits his overall portrayal as an undignified, chaotic god.

Freyr later performs a human-body modification on Narugami, turning him into a living device called the “Heimdall Detector,” nicknamed the “Hem-Radar.”

In this form, Narugami is effectively used as a sensor to track Kazumi Higashiyama (Heimdall), adding another layer of absurd comedy to his role.
