Renly Synthesis Twenty-Seven is a human knight of the Integrity Knights in the Underworld, known as the “failed” knight who overcame crippling trauma to become a key defender in the Human Empire–Dark Territory war and later the Moon Cradle and Unital Ring eras.
Renly Synthesis Twenty-Seven is one of the Integrity Knights tasked with defending the Human Empire.
As his number suggests, he was synthesized relatively late, and appears as a boy of about fifteen years old.
He is voiced by Mutsumi Tamura in the anime adaptation.
Before his memories were stolen, he was a prodigiously talented swordsman who trained with a close friend, and together they aimed to become knights.
The memories erased by the Synthesis ritual mainly concern this irreplaceable childhood friend.
Because of his gentle demeanor and calm air, he is often described as resembling Eugeo, particularly by Tiese Schtrinen.
At first glance, Renly looks like a delicate, fragile, doll-like pretty boy.
Under that appearance, however, lies the skill of a once-renowned genius swordsman, judged worthy by Quinella herself to wield one of the Underworld’s Divine Objects, the throwing blade “Twin-Winged Blades.”
Despite that talent, Renly’s unresolved trauma over killing his friend left him unable to use Weapon Full Control Art or Memory Release Art.
Quinella branded him a failure and had him sealed in deep freeze for years, until the chaos caused by Kazuto Kirigaya and Eugeo’s rebellion forced the Axiom Church to thaw him as an emergency reserve knight.
Renly’s character centers on fear, guilt, and the struggle to find real courage.
He is deeply compassionate and sensitive, but this also makes him vulnerable to psychological shock.
After accidentally killing his friend, Renly developed a terror of his own weapon and combat itself.
Even after becoming an Integrity Knight, that buried memory subconsciously shackled him, preventing him from drawing out his weapon’s true power.
He initially runs from the battlefield at the start of the Human Empire–Dark Territory war.
However, witnessing others fight to protect what they care about forces him to confront what strength really means.
By the end of the war, Renly comes to believe that true strength is to live, fight, and keep hearts and lives connected, even while afraid.
This hard-earned answer to “what is strength?” defines his growth and later life choices.
Renly’s main armament is the Divine Object throwing weapon Twin-Winged Blades.
The weapon is modeled on a pair of birds, where one bird has lost a wing and relies on its partner to stay aloft.
The Twin-Winged Blades resemble large chakram-like throwing blades that can be controlled with extraordinary precision.
When unleashed at full power, they can slice through enemies in multiple directions, cutting them apart as they ricochet through the air.
The weapon’s motif of two beings supporting one another mirrors Renly’s bond with his deceased friend and his later relationships with his comrades.
The blades’ full potential remained locked until Renly confronted his trauma and successfully invoked Memory Release Art in the midst of battle.
Before becoming an Integrity Knight, Renly was an exceptionally gifted young swordsman.
He and his closest friend trained together, dreaming of becoming honorable knights who would protect people.
During the Four Empires Unified Tournament, disaster struck.
In a tragic accident, Renly’s sword fatally wounded his friend.
As his friend lay dying, he did not curse Renly.
Instead, he told Renly to live on and become a fine knight, carrying both their dreams.
Afterward, Quinella chose Renly for Synthesis, erasing his memories and granting him the Divine Object Twin-Winged Blades.
However, even after his mind was rewritten, the deep trauma of killing his friend remained imprinted in his soul.
Because of this unresolved fear, Renly could not use Weapon Full Control Art or Memory Release Art at all.
Seeing this as a fatal flaw, Quinella judged him a defective product and placed him under Deep Freeze, sealing him away as a “failed” Integrity Knight.
Five years later, during the rebellion led by Kazuto Kirigaya and Eugeo, multiple Integrity Knights were defeated.
In desperate need of reinforcements, the Axiom Church thawed Renly, but he only regained consciousness after Quinella’s final battle had already ended.
Although Quinella had already fallen, Renly was thrown directly into the all-out war between the Human Empire and the Dark Territory.
Still burdened by terror and self-loathing, he was assigned a defensive position on the front line.
In the chaos and fear of the opening clashes, Renly’s courage failed him.
Overwhelmed, he abandoned his post and fled to the rear, hiding in a supply tent among the forces assigned to guard the back lines.
There he encountered Ronye Arabel, Tiese Schtrinen, and the unresponsive Kazuto Kirigaya, who had lost his right arm and Eugeo.
Renly immediately recognized from Kazuto’s black sword that this young man was someone who might have the power to save the entire world.
Yet he could not understand how such strength was born.
As he watched, a group of mountain goblins broke through the front and invaded the rear, threatening Ronye and Tiese.
The two trainee swordswomen drew their blades, hands trembling.
Renly himself wanted to help but found his body frozen by fear, just as in the tournament where he killed his friend.
Then he noticed Kazuto’s remaining hand shaking violently.
Even unable to stand, speak, or fight properly, Kazuto was still struggling to move, trying to protect others.
Seeing someone so broken still try to rise made Renly ashamed of his own cowardice.
He remembered the dying words and dreams of his friend, and something inside him finally pushed back against his fear.
Renly stepped forward to protect Ronye and Tiese and returned to the battlefield.
When the mountain goblin chieftain Kosogi appeared, Renly at last succeeded in channeling his Memory Release Art through the Twin-Winged Blades.
The unleashed blades cut down Kosogi and his goblin troops, preventing the collapse of the Human Empire’s defensive line.
In that moment, Renly broke the psychological chain that had bound him since the day of the tournament.
Later, when Asuna Yuuki descended with the authority of the Creation Goddess Stacia, Renly learned of the existence of the real world beyond the Underworld.
He was initially terrified by the real-world humans fighting on the Dark Territory side, who spoke a different language and fought with brutal hatred.
However, realizing that those who had come to help the Human Empire, like Asuna, were also from the real world, Renly reconsidered his assumptions.
He decided that the real world was not simply a source of evil, but a place with both enemies and allies.
By the time Kazuto defeated Gabriel Miller and ended the war, Renly had reached his own answer about strength.
To him, strength meant choosing to live, to fight through fear, and to keep hearts and lives connected rather than giving in to despair.
After the war against the Dark Territory, Renly survived and continued serving the new Human Empire order.
He became a senior member of the Human Empire Unification Council, taking on political and administrative responsibilities as well as military duties.
During this period, he grew closer to Tiese Schtrinen, with whom he had survived the harshest battles.
Renly eventually confessed his feelings and proposed marriage to her.
Tiese, however, still carried unresolved feelings for Eugeo, who had died saving the world.
She also felt that Renly’s demeanor and atmosphere strongly reminded her of Eugeo, which complicated her emotions.
Because of this, Tiese asked to put off giving an answer for a time.
Renly accepted her uncertainty and told her that he did not mind if she could not forget Eugeo.
In the end, Tiese did accept Renly’s feelings, and the two were married.
This union symbolically tied Renly not only to Tiese but also to Eugeo’s memory and hopes.
In the Unital Ring timeline, Renly and Tiese have children, and their family line continues into the distant future.
However, Renly’s life and body are affected by the same kind of life-span freezing techniques used on other top Integrity Knights.
Renly’s Life was placed under a freezing technique that prevented him from aging.
As the years passed, Tiese continued to grow older as a normal human, while Renly’s appearance remained that of a youthful boy.
This difference caused Renly deep inner conflict and sadness, as he watched the woman he loved grow old while he stayed unchanged.
By that time, however, Selka Zuberg and others had succeeded in reconstructing the Life Freezing Art.
Using this technique, Tiese, along with Selka and Ronye Arabel, had their Life frozen as well.
Later, they each entered a Deep Freeze state, sleeping in suspended animation so they would no longer age.
Just like Fanatio Synthesis Two and Deusolbert Synthesis Seven, Renly eventually underwent a petrification and freezing procedure.
He was enshrined on the 99th floor of the Central Cathedral, preserved for an unknown future.
Even after centuries, Renly and Tiese’s lineage endured.
Two hundred years later, a seventh-generation descendant named Stica Schtrinen was born, said to be the spitting image of Tiese in her youth.
Eugeo
Eugeo is the person to whom Renly is most often compared in appearance and aura.
Both are gentle, introspective swordsmen who struggle with the meaning of strength and the weight of responsibility.
Although they never met in life, Renly inherits some of Eugeo’s unresolved emotional space through Tiese’s feelings.
Renly’s willingness to accept that Tiese will never completely forget Eugeo is one of his most mature traits.
Tiese Schtrinen
Tiese is both Renly’s comrade in war and his eventual wife.
They share the trauma and memories of the Human Empire–Dark Territory war, particularly the moment when Renly chose to protect Tiese and Ronye for the first time.
Tiese initially hesitates to accept Renly’s proposal because of her enduring love for Eugeo.
Renly’s calm acceptance of that truth and his readiness to shoulder both her present and her past eventually win her heart.
Their marriage and descendants, including Stica Schtrinen, show that their bond remains important to Underworld history even centuries later.
Their story also emphasizes one of the series’ central themes: that love and memory can coexist with grief without cancelling each other out.
Ronye Arabel
Ronye is present at the turning point where Renly overcomes his fear.
Along with Tiese, she stands her ground against the invading goblins, despite shaking with fear.
Renly’s decision to protect Ronye and Tiese marks his first real act of courage as an Integrity Knight.
Ronye later joins Tiese in having her Life frozen, tying her future indirectly to Renly’s extended existence.
Kazuto Kirigaya
Kazuto is the catalyst for Renly’s awakening as a true knight.
Even severely injured and mentally broken, Kazuto’s trembling hand reaching for his sword embodies the will to fight for others.
Renly is deeply moved by this silent determination.
Through Kazuto’s example, he realizes that courage is not the absence of fear but the decision to act in spite of it.
Although they have limited direct interaction, Kazuto’s influence defines Renly’s new understanding of strength and responsibility.
Renly also recognizes Kazuto as someone who could save not only the Underworld but also its future connections to the real world.
Quinella
Quinella, the Administrator of the Axiom Church, is the one who branded Renly a failure.
She saw the inability to fully control his weapon and memories as an unacceptable defect in a tool meant solely for perfect obedience and combat performance.
By sealing Renly away in Deep Freeze on the Cathedral’s upper floors, Quinella denied him any chance to grow past his trauma.
Ironically, it was only after her fall that Renly was able to awaken and find his own path as a knight.
Renly’s combat style is based on high-speed, high-precision throwing weapon techniques using the Twin-Winged Blades.
He excels at mid- to long-range control, sending the blades curving through the air to attack multiple enemies from unexpected angles.
Before conquering his trauma, he could only use this skill at a basic level, severely limiting his effectiveness as an Integrity Knight.
After awakening his Memory Release Art, he can fully synchronize with his weapon’s true form and destructive potential.
In his Memory Release state, the Twin-Winged Blades move like living extensions of Renly’s will.
They swirl and dance through the battlefield, cutting down enemies from every direction, reminiscent of bird wings slicing through the air.
Renly’s strength is not raw power compared to some other Integrity Knights, but finesse, control, and adaptability.
His growth arc turns him from a paralyzed prodigy into a dependable knight who fights to protect his comrades until the very end of the war.
