Ojiya is Dororo's mother, known for her deep love and sacrifice for her child. After her husband Hibukuro's death, she cared for little Dororo alone and gave up her own food to feed her daughter, growing weaker day by day. Her most remarkable point is her enduring spirit and motherly love, placing Dororo above herself even in the harshest times.
Ojiya is depicted as a frail woman with a worn face, showing signs of exhaustion and hunger. Her hands become burned while she tries to get food for Dororo, showing her willingness to suffer for her daughter.
Ojiya has a strong will and a gentle heart. She hates samurai for the suffering they have caused, but never becomes bitter. She refuses to sell her body no matter how desperate things get. Her love for Dororo is her greatest strength.
Hard Life After Hibukuro's Death
Ojiya becomes the sole carer for young Dororo after Hibukuro dies. She gives almost all her food to Dororo and starts to weaken.
The Incident with the Burned Hands
When Itachi, a former ally, runs a soup kitchen, Ojiya tries to get porridge for Dororo. She catches the boiling food in her bare hands and gets burned, showing her selflessness.
Final Days in the Flower Field
Ojiya grows weaker and dies in a field of red spider lilies, holding Dororo. She passes away before her hand burns heal, showing how much she gave up for her child.
The Map on Dororo's Back
Hibukuro wanted to tell her where he hid treasure, but Ojiya feared she would use it only for Dororo, not for the greater good. She asked Hibukuro to tattoo the map on her back, out of her own sight, and told Dororo to remember the map well.
No Selling Her Body
Even in the worst poverty, Ojiya never sells her body. Dororo, later, tells Mio about this, saying her mother died because she chose not to do so.
The 2019 Anime
The anime follows a similar story. After Hibukuro tries to share the secret of the treasure, Ojiya has half the map carved on her back and half on Dororo's. Ojiya never sells her body and gives all food to Dororo, but dies of hunger in a flower field. Her grave is later disturbed by Itachi, who copies the map from her back.
Ojiya's most famous line is, "Drink for me, too," showing her self-sacrifice until the end.
"Drink for me, too."
