This loss caused Gambino to develop a deep resentment toward Guts, whom he began to blame for bringing disaster upon their lives.

Gambino treated Guts harshly, being rough and strict with him, even when Guts tried his best to please Gambino and take care of him.

Eventually, Gambino went so far as to sell Guts as a night companion to Donovan, a fellow mercenary with a predilection for young boys, for the price of three silver coins.

Later, Gambino lost a leg on the battlefield and could no longer fight.

He started taking all of Guts’ earnings but only cared for the dog he named after his deceased wife.

Even the other mercenaries frowned at how cruelly Gambino behaved toward Guts at this point.

As Gambino’s spirit became more and more bitter, he irrationally blamed Guts for every misfortune in his life.

One night, drunk and enraged, Gambino tried to kill Guts.

In a reflexive act of self-defense, Guts stabbed Gambino through the throat with his sword.

Even though it was an accident, Guts was deeply shaken by the fact that he had killed his foster father.

He had no choice but to escape, leaving behind everything except his sword.
