Character Setting

Edit

Sophitia is a mysterious being who appears before the protagonist, Kakeru Niimi, in the world of 9-nine-, quickly becoming one of the most important characters across the series. She usually manifests as a floating, oddly adorable yet eerie plush doll—a self-proclaimed “temporary form.” In reality, she insists she is a beautiful girl, but this puppet-like body is merely a vessel, capable of transforming, disappearing, and reviving if destroyed. Her presence is intrinsically linked to the world of Artifacts, where she is a key member of the organization known as Sephiroth, tasked with Artifact management. With a sharp tongue, realistic outlook, and willingness to make tough decisions for the greater good, Sophitia often treads the line between cold rationalist and deeply caring guardian—especially towards the Niimi siblings.

Sophitia’s default appearance is that of a floating, slightly unsettling yet cute stuffed doll, which gives off a mystical aura.

This plushie body is not her true self, but a manipulated vessel.

She can shapeshift, vanish into thin air, and instantly regenerate if “destroyed.”

It is explicitly stated that this is a “temporary form,” and she claims her real form is that of a beautiful girl, though no one verifies this directly.

Her true silhouette is only revealed briefly at crucial moments in the story.

Sophitia is brazen, forthright, and not afraid to speak harsh truths.

She’s pragmatic—ready to do whatever it takes to mitigate risk, even making seemingly ruthless calls.

Despite her realist nature, she frequently shows genuine concern and gentle support, especially for the protagonist and his allies.

She can be playful and exasperating, often poking fun at others and asserting her seniority or “greater wisdom.”

She abides strictly by “rules,” believing order is essential for the organization’s survival.

She also displays a “finder’s keepers” attitude toward lost items.

Sophitia is an Artifact researcher and a founding member of the Sephiroth organization.

She originally hails from a parallel world where Artifacts are naturally present.

Her main role within Sephiroth is managing and regulating the use and retrieval of Artifacts, particularly when they cross over into the protagonist’s world.

She employs layers of enchantments: only Artifact users can perceive her or understand her speech, which is dynamically translated by referencing both parties’ conceptual vocabularies.

Sophitia’s true identity is that of Eirith, a fabled figure who, 1000 years earlier, returned the Artifacts during a disastrous overflow incident.

After that, she established Sephiroth to safeguard the world from further dangers, but contracted away much of her former power—leaving her considerably weakened compared to her past self.

Sophitia wields the Artifact known as the “Eye of the World,” which allows her awareness of experiences and memories from other parallel worlds or timelines.

Using this, she can anticipate opponents, gather intel, and provide guidance—though she rarely shares the full extent of her insights with the protagonist’s group.

She’s layered lower-ranked Artifacts’ enchantments upon herself, becoming invisible to non-users and immune to most Artifact-based detection or interference.

She collects information at lightning speed, able to deduce personal data, real names, ages, and even addresses of new Artifact users within a single day.

Her temporary body can morph and instantly revive if destroyed.

She’s notably immune to certain overpowered Artifacts—like the Mystic Eye or Sora Niimi’s own ability.

Kakeru Niimi (Protagonist): Acts as both guide and antagonist, alternately helping and testing him.

Miyako Kujou: Works closely with her to retrieve and control Artifacts.

Sora Niimi & Noa Yuuki: Monitors their powers closely, often acting as a cautious adviser.

Sephiroth (Organization): A senior agent and one of its founders, tasked with overseeing all Artifact activities.

Haruka Kousaka, Renya Takamine: Quickly gathers intelligence about them and involves them as needed.

Eirith (Her Former Self): Struggles with her legacy and decisions, frequently pitted against Eirith’s will and actions.

Only visible and audible to Artifact Users, thanks to multilayered enchantments.

Regular humans perceive her solely as a bizarre stuffed animal—if at all.

Fond of quipping that her “real form” is that of a stunning beauty.

She admits to being “a scavenger”: anything found is fair game.

Her in-game role doubles as a mascot character for the 9-nine- series.

References and pokes fun at her own limitations and peculiarities, such as her ephemeral body and strict adherence to rules.

“It’s precisely because you’re in charge that you have to follow the rules. If you do whatever you want, the organization can’t function.”

“How something appears doesn’t matter. Reality is what counts.”

“When you fall, you pick yourself back up and try again; that’s how this world works.”

"The others can’t see or hear me—but that’s for the best, really."

"To protect the world, some things must remain hidden—even from you."

9-nine- Shihaisha no Oukan

Sophitia first appears as a lost plush doll found at a shrine by the protagonist, only to mysteriously sneak into his room.

When a fire breaks out at school, she guides Kakeru Niimi and Miyako Kujou to discover its source—an Artifact gone berserk.

She eventually reveals her identity, urging Miyako and Kakeru to aid her with Artifact recovery.

Thanks to her astonishing information-gathering speed, she soon unmasks Haruka Kousaka and Noa Yuuki as key figures in the Artifact user network.

Sophitia is blunt about deaths or threats—telling Kakeru about the user who caused the fire dying soon after.

When Miyako learns about the Mystic Eye artifact and is defeated by its user, Sophitia tries to stimulate a power awakening in Kakeru, but without success.

If the player “restarts” with new choices, Sophitia adjusts her guidance accordingly, reflecting her multi-branch awareness.

Her continued interventions and hints are a constant, yet she occasionally vanishes if she deems progress at a standstill.

9-nine- Sora no Uta no Oto

Sophitia reacts to the growing differences between parallel branches.

She sternly warns Sora Niimi as her Artifact use becomes dangerously excessive.

During a Ghost assault, Sophitia helps by blocking the enemy’s sight and thus neutralizing the Mystic Eye attack.

When Sora’s powers spiral out of control, Sophitia presents her with a mystical elixir that can sever Artifact contracts.

After Sora relinquishes her powers, Sophitia warns of the Ghost’s sudden resurrection and hands Kakeru an Artifact.

Later, she helps the protagonist group nullify further threats and observes their attempts to defeat the Mystic Eye user.

In a shocking twist, the end of this route shows Sophitia in secretive conference with Yoichi Fukazawa—the mastermind antagonist.

9-nine- Haru no Kaze

Previews hinted at betrayal from Sophitia.

Suspicious of new groups like Rig Veda Asura, she scrutinizes Kakeru’s hunches and offers ambiguous hints about possible abilities like Overload.

Sophitia investigates why the Ghost can only eat gum, suggesting he’s merely Yoichi Fukazawa’s avatar.

A daring scheme involving a crane game helps expose Yoichi’s identity.

As events escalate, Sophitia covertly follows enemy movements but with mixed success.

When Kakeru’s team attempts to use the elixir against Rig Veda Asura, they instead unintentionally kill him—only to be immediately defeated by Eirith, who now possesses the Mystic Eye.

Sophitia reveals she only supports Kakeru’s group, that the “Sophitia” seen speaking with Rig Veda Asura was an impostor, and that she let everyone die because of time loop mechanics.

Successive “branches” see her adapting responses, deducing which items are fake and exposing more about her conflict with Eirith, leading to increasingly dire confrontations.

9-nine- Yuki no Ato

Once the player adjusts to the Overload ability, Sophitia’s true silhouette is exposed.

She tries to use Noa’s power, The Order, to eliminate Eirith, but fails due to hesitation, tasking the protagonist with uncovering why.

She shares crucial intelligence, explains the true nature of the “familiarization” process for Artifact abilities, and exposes risks she withheld from the team.

As monstrous puppet crowds overrun the city, previously invisible clues—such as allies being able to see her—build up to plot twists.

After the defeat of Eirith, Sophitia reports back and urges a pause in Artifact recovery, but new threats loom.

In the later timeline, Sophitia and the protagonist strategize against time-traveling Eirith.

She arranges for Noa to jointly attack Eirith across all timelines, sacrificing herself in a climactic clash.

In the aftermath, she gently watches over the protagonist as he finally rests, and elsewhere, calmly reports the new order to her remaining allies—with the promise of a final, decisive pruning yet to come.

Voiced by Satomi Arai in the animated adaptation.

Serves as both mascot and information broker throughout all routes.

Subtly breaks the fourth wall, as her powers and limitations mirror the branching, save/load structure of visual novels.

The title "Nine" directly references Sophitia herself—her role as the “ninth Artifact User,” tying her to the player as the pivotal character.

Despite moments of emotional coldness, she values her companions deeply and continuously aids them in their struggles, often at her own risk.
