Character Setting

Edit

Ground Dragon is a mole-type monster created by Genus-hakase for the House of Evolution, appearing in the manga and anime series One-Punch Man as a minor villain who is swiftly defeated by Saitama.

Ground Dragon is a subterranean monster engineered by Genus-hakase as part of the House of Evolution’s artificial monster program.

He works as a support combatant, primarily assisting Juu Ou and other monsters in capturing targets.

His name comes from the direct English translation of the kanji for mole, “土竜” (“earth dragon”), rendered as “Ground Dragon.”

He belongs to the same monster group as Armored Gorilla and Juu Ou, deployed together on a mission to capture Saitama.

His official disaster level is not specified.

Despite this, he displays impressive raw power and mobility when moving through the ground.

Ground Dragon is quickly eliminated by Saitama during their first encounter.

His brief appearance has still made him a memorable joke character among fans and even in the official monster data materials.

Ground Dragon resembles a mole standing upright on two legs.

His overall height reaches about Saitama’s waist, suggesting he is roughly 1 meter tall.

Compared to a real mole, his limbs and neck are slender and relatively long, giving him a slightly lean and agile silhouette.

In contrast, his nose is shorter and more rounded than that of an actual mole, which gives his face a more compact look.

He has sharp, pointed claws on both his hands and feet, befitting a digging specialist.

His eyes are narrowed and sharp, giving him a somewhat fierce and alert expression.

One of his most distinctive visual traits is the large kanji “土竜” written on his torso.

This functions almost like a logo or emblem, visually emphasizing his identity as a mole-type monster.

Ground Dragon serves under Juu Ou, but their relationship does not appear strictly hierarchical.

Juu Ou speaks to him in a slightly condescending “good job” tone, while Ground Dragon casually uses informal speech back, suggesting a loose, comrade-like dynamic.

He is not hot-headed and tends to act with a degree of caution.

In battle, he recognizes the difference in combat ability between himself and Juu Ou and therefore focuses on support instead of direct confrontation.

Rather than rushing in recklessly, he prefers to attack from below or assist stronger allies.

This shows a relatively rational mindset compared to some more aggressive monsters.

However, he still fails to gauge Saitama’s overwhelming power at first.

When Juu Ou is instantly killed, Ground Dragon is terrified and immediately makes the logical choice to retreat underground.

His reaction underground, when Saitama suddenly appears in front of him, reveals genuine shock and disbelief.

He clearly understands that he has encountered an opponent far beyond any reasonable expectation, and his panic highlights how outmatched he is.

Ground Dragon’s core ability is high-speed subterranean movement and excavation.

Using the claws on his hands and feet, he can rapidly dig through soil and even break through harder materials like concrete.

In reality, normal moles dig at a very slow pace.

Ground Dragon, being a bio-engineered monster of the House of Evolution, surpasses natural limits and tunnels through man-made structures with remarkable speed.

His digging skill allows him to launch surprise attacks from underground.

He successfully drags Saitama down into the earth up to his neck in an instant, which implies a surprisingly high level of physical strength.

This feat means he can apply enough force to pull an adult human deep into the ground in one smooth motion.

Although Saitama escapes effortlessly, that is due to Saitama’s absurd strength rather than any weakness in Ground Dragon’s own ability.

His combat style is built around ambush and hit-and-run tactics, relying on the terrain of the underground.

He does not seem to possess notable ranged attacks or complex techniques beyond his tunneling and grappling power.

Ground Dragon appears during the House of Evolution arc.

Under orders from Genus-hakase, he joins Armored Gorilla, Juu Ou, and other monsters on a mission to capture Saitama.

His assigned role is to operate from underground as support.

He emerges beneath Saitama and attempts to restrain him by dragging him into the earth.

Although he succeeds for a moment and buries Saitama up to the neck, Saitama immediately frees himself without difficulty.

Juu Ou then engages Saitama in close combat, only to be killed instantly.

Witnessing Juu Ou’s one-hit defeat, Ground Dragon realizes the situation is hopeless.

Overwhelmed by fear, he chooses to flee by diving deep into the ground, believing he can escape in his natural domain.

However, Saitama casually follows him underground with ease, completely undermining Ground Dragon’s supposed home-field advantage.

When Ground Dragon sees Saitama appear ahead of him even in the subterranean environment, he is stunned and horrified.

Saitama then punches him from below, sending him crashing upward through the ground and into the sky.

Ground Dragon dies on the spot, his escape attempt ending abruptly and comically.

In the anime version, his corpse is shown smashed against the side of a building, blood splattered around, confirming his death.

His demise is treated humorously, emphasizing the massive gap between ordinary monsters of the House of Evolution and Saitama.

Official monster encyclopedias and fan discussions often reference how unfortunate and outclassed he was.

Ground Dragon has since become a minor running joke character: competent in his niche, but utterly doomed once Saitama enters the picture.

In the anime adaptation, Ground Dragon is voiced by Shinya Hamazoe.

Hamazoe’s performance gives the character a slightly edgy yet comedic tone that fits Ground Dragon’s brief but memorable appearance.
