Iena Madaraba

Iena Madaraba has a boyish look and often dresses in male clothing. After discovering she is female, Iena tries to dress and act more like a girl for a time, even letting her brother style her hair in a feminine way. However, she quickly returns to her previous style, wearing mainly boyish outfits. Even when she is required to wear the girls’ school uniform, Iena still prefers male clothes. Her appearance makes her stand out among other students.

Iena has a strong, brave, and cool personality. She is known for her “manly” spirit and loves to fight strong opponents. Even though many hyenas and others like her, Iena thinks being alone is best and does not join any groups. She can be stubborn, determined, and sometimes misunderstood because of her actions. Deep down, she has a gentle side and is troubled by her own identity.

Iena comes from a family that hopes she will act more like a “normal” girl. Her father wishes she would wear skirts and dresses, and her brother even tries to help her look more feminine. Their family lost their mother, who was a strong hyena. Iena’s father tells her stories about how great her mother was, and Iena tries to be like her. As part of a society that is becoming more open, Iena’s family starts to accept her masculine way of living.

Iena is extremely strong in fights and can beat up even male lions with ease. She is brave and not scared of any strong enemy, including tough agents like the binturong and the mammoth Man Koorimoto. Her strength makes her well-known and respected.

Iena is classmates with Ranka Ōkami and Jin Mazama. She becomes good friends with Anne Anetani after once competing for Hitomi Hino’s attention. Iena develops feelings for Hitomi and often asks her for advice on how to be more ladylike. She has a complicated bond with her father and brother, who hope she will be more girly but also want her to be happy. Although she faces problems with Bonobo girls who often force kisses on her, Iena keeps her fighting spirit. She and King Shishino respect each other’s strength.

First Appearance and Gender Identity

Iena Madaraba appears for the first time in episode 14. She always thought she was a male because female spotted hyenas have a unique body structure that looks similar to males. This confusion is made worse by a misunderstanding with her father and older brother. Iena hates being told she is a girl.

Realizing the Truth

Jin Mazama uses his knowledge to show Iena that she is actually female. This makes Iena feel lost and unsure about herself. She tries to change by letting her brother style her hair in a feminine way and wearing girl’s clothes. For a short time, she goes to school in a girl’s uniform and tries to act more like a traditional girl.

Choosing Her Own Way

Mei Mei teaches Iena that it is best to live how she wants. Inspired by this, Iena goes back to her old style, living as she likes and dressing like a boy. Her family eventually comes to accept her for who she is, understanding that it is okay for her to live differently.

Friendship and Rivalry

Iena tries to become more ladylike to appeal to Hitomi Hino and starts to like her. She even has a contest with Anne Anetani for Hitomi’s attention, and they become friends after. Iena often gets caught up in Hitomi’s wild accidents and sometimes ends up getting kissed or “kidnapped” by Bonobo girls, losing her memory of these events due to how overwhelming they are. Each time, Iena tries to fight back, but this only encourages the Bonobo girls more.

Family Relations

Even though Iena’s dad and brother want her to be more feminine, they come to support her way of life as society becomes more understanding of gender diversity. Iena looks up to her strong mother, who has passed away.

Female spotted hyenas have both regular female organs and what looks like male organs. Because it is hard to tell the difference, many people used to think hyenas had both genders before more research was done.
