Character Setting

Edit

Lux is a female player character and Sword Art Online survivor from the Sword Art Online: Girls’ Ops side stories, known for her long hair, soft demeanor in real life, and her painful past of being forced to serve under the murder guild Laughing Coffin.

Lux’s real name is Hiyori, a gentle, polite girl in the real world who becomes more casual and rough-spoken when she plays VRMMO games.

She has a curvy figure, long hair, and a slightly airheaded, laid-back personality that contrasts with the heaviness of her past.

She is both a returning player from Sword Art Online and an Alfheim Online player.

In Girls’ Ops, she first appears in Alfheim Online under the avatar name Kuro, and later switches to the avatar Lux, based on her original SAO data.

Her birthday is April 12, though her exact age, height, and other physical measurements are not disclosed in the source material.

Her voice actress is Chinatsu Akasaki.

Lux admires Kazuto Kirigaya deeply for clearing Sword Art Online and initially calls him with an honorific equivalent to “Kazuto Kirigaya-sama,” treating him like a distant hero.

After interacting with his friends Silica and Lisbeth, she gradually shifts from idolizing him to understanding him as a real person and role model.

Following her return from the SAO incident, Lux attends a special “returnee school” for former SAO players, the same type of institution Silica (Keiko Ayano) and Lisbeth (Rika Shinozaki) attend.

She becomes genuine friends with them and begins to move forward from her trauma.

Name: Lux (in-game avatar), real first name Hiyori

Gender: Female

Birthday: April 12

Status: Sword Art Online survivor, Alfheim Online player

First Appearance: Sword Art Online: Girls’ Ops manga (volume 6 extra comic specified for some data)

Voice Actress: Chinatsu Akasaki

In reality, Lux is kind, considerate, and uses polite, refined speech.

She tends to be gentle and hesitant, with a strong sense of guilt and responsibility stemming from her past in SAO.

In VR games, her speech becomes much rougher and more casual, almost “boyish” or tomboy-like.

Lisbeth jokingly describes her as someone whose “personality changes when she’s holding the steering wheel,” meaning she turns into a different person once she starts playing.

Even after she stops imitating Kazuto Kirigaya and switches from Kuro to Lux, she keeps that more masculine way of speaking in-game.

She explains that this habit existed even before she ever used the Kuro avatar, so it is not part of her Kazuto Kirigaya imitation but her own gaming persona.

Visually, she is noted to have a large bust; Silica even compares her to Suguha Kirigaya (Leafa), implying Lux’s chest size is on a similar, impressive level.

Despite her looks, she is shy and self-conscious, especially because of her traumatic experiences and her feelings of unworthiness.

During the Sword Art Online incident, Hiyori participated as a male avatar at first.

However, when Kayaba Akihiko distributed the special mirror item that showed players’ true appearances, her avatar was forcibly changed to match her real-world female body.

At some point in SAO, Lux became trapped in a dangerous dungeon situation, cornered and close to death.

There she encountered the infamous murder guild Laughing Coffin.

To survive, she begged for her life and agreed to become subordinate to one of Laughing Coffin’s lower branches or sub-organizations.

This was not a willing choice but a desperate survival decision, and it left her with deep moral guilt.

Although she was never one of the core members of Laughing Coffin, she was compelled to cooperate and thus became involved in their crimes, which torments her later.

After the collapse and downfall of Laughing Coffin, Lux somehow managed to escape punishment due to her minor role and complicated circumstances.

Even so, she feels she never properly atoned for what she did under Laughing Coffin’s control.

She also lost important friends during this period, including a fellow player named Gwen, whose similar suffering made their bond very important to her.

Being separated from Gwen hurt her deeply, leaving a scar that did not fade even after she was freed from Sword Art Online.

To make matters worse, she later lost another precious friend, Blossom, who had helped and supported her.

These repeated tragedies during and after SAO shaped Lux into a person who believes she does not deserve happiness.

Her survivor’s guilt and unresolved remorse explain why she has trouble going back to normal life.

After being released from Sword Art Online, Hiyori’s emotional wounds did not heal quickly.

She found it difficult to return to her previous routine and was unable to attend school for a while.

Eventually she enrolls in a special school for returning SAO survivors, similar to the one Silica and Lisbeth attend.

There she meets them face-to-face in the real world as Keiko Ayano (Silica) and Rika Shinozaki (Lisbeth), and they officially become friends outside the game.

These connections are crucial for Hiyori’s recovery.

Through daily contact with other survivors who truly understand what happened in SAO, she slowly begins to accept her past.

Her decision to stop imitating Kazuto Kirigaya and to use her own SAO-based avatar Lux reflects a conscious desire to live as herself instead of hiding behind someone else’s identity.

It marks a turning point where she chooses to face both her trauma and her future more honestly.

When Hiyori starts playing the rebooted version of Alfheim Online, she creates a new character.

The system randomly generates an avatar that ends up looking very similar to Kazuto Kirigaya’s appearance during the Sword Art Online days.

This avatar, named Kuro, is a female-type avatar despite strongly resembling Kazuto Kirigaya’s iconic black-clad look.

Kuro becomes Hiyori’s initial persona in ALO before she later switches to Lux.

Inspired and obsessed with her hero, Hiyori decides to fully mimic Kazuto Kirigaya’s appearance and fighting style using Kuro.

She wears black coat-style armor and uses two swords: a white sword and a black sword, directly mirroring his famous dual-wield setup.

Because of a misunderstanding on her part, the colors of the swords are reversed from Kazuto Kirigaya’s original configuration.

In practice, she fights using self-taught dual wielding, but her skill does not reach his level.

As a result, her left-hand sword ends up being used almost exclusively for defense rather than true dual-wield offensive techniques.

Even so, her fighting style clearly pays homage to Kazuto Kirigaya and shows how much she idolizes him.

At this period, she even adopts speech patterns and mannerisms similar to Kazuto Kirigaya’s in-game persona.

She wants to become a “fake Kazuto Kirigaya,” as if copying him could make her as strong and “worthy” as he is in her eyes.

In Alfheim Online, Lux (still using Kuro at the time) sets her sights on obtaining the rare item known as the Angel’s Ring entirely by her own strength.

She challenges the related quest alone, determined not to rely on anyone and to prove something to herself.

At the same time, Silica, Lisbeth, and Leafa independently come to challenge the same quest.

They meet Kuro by chance while preparing for or moving through the quest area.

At first, Kuro is cold and rejecting toward them.

She refuses their help and insists on challenging the boss by herself, reflecting her isolation and self-punishing mindset.

Silica, however, is deeply moved by Kuro’s pain and continues to pursue her.

She confronts Kuro not as a rival but as a fellow survivor who can understand suffering and regret.

Silica’s sincerity finally reaches Kuro.

Kuro opens up enough to reconcile with her and agree to cooperate with Silica, Lisbeth, and Leafa.

The four of them tackle the boss fight together and successfully clear the quest, securing the Angel’s Ring item.

Through this joint effort, Kuro experiences the warmth of true camaraderie instead of the twisted, coerced bonds she had under Laughing Coffin.

This experience becomes a turning point.

She realizes that Kazuto Kirigaya is not just a distant hero to be copied but a person who values his friends and fights alongside them.

After the quest and her reconciliation with Silica, Lisbeth, and Leafa, Hiyori reexamines her obsession with copying Kazuto Kirigaya.

She comes to understand that simply imitating his gear, manner of speech, and fighting style does not make her him, nor does it solve her guilt.

She decides it is time to stop the “Kazuto Kirigaya cosplay” and live as her own person in the game.

To do this, she abandons the Kuro avatar and creates a new avatar using the data from her original Sword Art Online character.

This new avatar is Lux, a Sylph swordswoman.

By converting her old SAO data into Alfheim Online, Lux becomes a continuation of who she truly was back then, rather than a copy of someone else.

Lux keeps her somewhat rough in-game speech, but now it is clearly her own habit rather than an imitation.

Her adventures continue alongside Silica and Lisbeth as part of the Girls’ Ops cast.

The switch from Kuro to Lux symbolizes her acceptance of both her trauma in SAO and her desire to move forward as Hiyori, not as “fake Kazuto Kirigaya.”

It is also a gesture of respect toward Kazuto Kirigaya: she admires him enough to stop pretending to be him.

Kazuto Kirigaya

Kazuto Kirigaya is Lux’s greatest hero and the model for her early playstyle in Alfheim Online.

She first sees him as an almost mythic savior for clearing Sword Art Online.

She calls him with an honorific equivalent to “Kazuto Kirigaya-sama,” placing him on a pedestal.

Her Kuro avatar, black coat, dual swords, and speech all imitate his SAO persona.

Through her interactions with his close friends, she learns that he is a flawed but kind human being, not an unreachable legend.

This understanding encourages her to stop copying him and to respect him by becoming strong in her own way.

Silica (Keiko Ayano)

Silica is the one who emotionally breaks through Lux’s defenses.

When Kuro tries to keep everyone at a distance, Silica refuses to give up on her.

Silica empathizes with Lux’s pain and insists on helping her, even chasing her into a solo boss fight.

Lux is moved by Silica’s genuine concern and ultimately accepts her hand.

They become close friends both in Alfheim Online and in the real world, where they attend the same returnee school.

Their friendship gives Lux a sense of belonging she lost after SAO.

Lisbeth (Rika Shinozaki)

Lisbeth quickly picks up on Lux’s “two personalities” – one in real life and one in-game – and teases her playfully about it.

She calls Lux the type whose “personality changes when she takes the wheel,” highlighting how different Lux is when immersed in the game.

Lisbeth becomes another pillar of support for Lux.

Through banter and shared quests, she helps Lux feel comfortable being herself.

Leafa (Suguha Kirigaya)

Leafa participates in the Angel’s Ring quest with Silica and Lisbeth and thus becomes involved in Lux’s story.

Silica’s comment about Lux’s bust size even compares her to Suguha, implying a bit of playful rivalry or at least comparison between them.

While Leafa is not as central to Lux’s healing as Silica or Lisbeth, she contributes to the teamwork that helps Lux overcome her isolation.

Her presence also subtly links Lux to Kazuto Kirigaya’s family circle, which Lux admires from afar.

Gwen and Blossom

Gwen is a friend Lux met under circumstances similar to her own during Sword Art Online.

They shared suffering and fear, and their bond meant a great deal to Lux.

Being separated from Gwen left a deep wound in Lux’s heart, reinforcing her feelings of loss.

This separation becomes one of the core sources of her emotional trauma.

Blossom is another dear friend who helped Lux after those dark times.

Tragically, Blossom dies, striking Lux with yet another heavy blow.

Losing Blossom after Gwen makes Lux feel cursed and undeserving of happiness.

These repeated losses are a major reason she initially isolates herself and tries to carry her burdens alone.

Lux is canonically confirmed to have her birthday on April 12, which is discovered when her friends see her settings data on her gaming device.

This detail is revealed in bonus material associated with the Girls’ Ops manga.

Her chest size is explicitly remarked upon in the story, with Silica comparing her to Suguha Kirigaya.

This emphasizes her voluptuous figure, which contrasts with her gentle, somewhat self-effacing personality.

In SAO, she started the game with a male avatar, but the mirror item distributed by Kayaba revealed and reverted her to her real female appearance.

This early forced reveal foreshadows how, later in Alfheim Online, she also has to drop the mask of being “fake Kazuto Kirigaya” and accept her true self as Lux.
