Character Setting

Edit

Butagami is a male S-Class Rank 10 professional hero in One-Punch Man, a colossal glutton whose overwhelming body fat, bizarre physiology, and near-bottomless stomach make him both a walking fortress and a living monster-eater.

Butagami is an extremely obese man who is almost always eating, regardless of the situation.

Even during urgent hero meetings about the destruction of Earth, he calmly keeps stuffing himself with food.

He constantly consumes huge amounts of nutrition to maintain his abnormal body and powers.

When his food supply runs out, he becomes noticeably agitated and unsettled.

Despite his lazy appearance and habit of not moving much unless necessary, he is observant and acts with a clear sense of purpose.

He is deeply aware of his role as a hero and repeatedly pushes himself into dangerous situations out of what he calls his “responsibility as a hero.”

He is voiced by Daisuke Namikawa in the anime adaptation.

In the series, Namikawa also voices Genus-hakase (Dr. Genus) in the House of Evolution storyline.

Overall Combat Ability

Butagami’s reputation as S-Class Rank 10 is fully deserved.

His main combat method is grotesque but straightforward: he swallows monsters whole and defeats them from the inside.

He can gulp down monsters far larger than himself, ignoring common sense and any normal physical limits.

Witnesses describe his technique as outright defying the laws of physics.

His thick subcutaneous fat absorbs almost any impact, giving him extraordinary durability.

He combines this durability with high power, speed, and mobility that completely contradict his lazy, heavy appearance.

He has shown the ability to:

Capture and swallow fast-moving, amorphous enemies.

Burrow and travel underground at high speed while hiding multiple people inside his body.

Smash straight through buildings as if they were shortcuts.

Grapple directly with the monster association executive Gums, a powerful monster built around biting and devouring.

He can also sprint at high speed to reach disaster sites in time, despite his massive body.

All of this paints him as a powerhouse in strength, defense, and surprising mobility.

Swallowing and Digestion

Butagami’s stomach is one of his most terrifying weapons.

His gastric juices are so strong that he can instantly digest fluid-type monsters.

Once he swallows a monster, it is essentially guaranteed to be destroyed from within his body.

This includes enemies that attack from inside his stomach, whom he calmly digests regardless of the damage they try to inflict.

In addition, he appears able to control aspects of his bodily fluids, such as saliva and stomach acid.

He can selectively digest enemies while leaving allies unharmed inside his body, which implies precise internal control.

Resistance to Poisons

In the remake version, Butagami demonstrates absurd immunity to toxins.

He eats multiple varieties of deadly poison produced by the monster Eyesight, substances that would kill monsters instantly or be completely unsurvivable to any living creature.

Even after being exposed to all of Eyesight’s lethal toxins, he remains perfectly fine.

This level of immunity is so extreme that the genius hero Child Emperor simply gives up trying to rationally explain his biology.

His resistance is likely related to his habit of eating monsters regularly, building up inhuman tolerance over time.

As a result, poison is effectively useless against him in combat.

Protective Swallowing

Butagami is not limited to using his body offensively.

He can also swallow allies to protect them inside his body, shielding them from outside attacks.

During the Monster Association conflict, he hides heavily injured heroes in his stomach to keep them safe while he moves.

Despite his lethal digestive capabilities, these allies remain unharmed, reinforcing the idea that he can consciously regulate his internal environment.

This makes him a unique combination of tank, transport, and emergency shelter on the battlefield.

His body serves as both armor and ambulance for his comrades.

Hidden Trump Card and the Prophecy

During his encounter with Garou, Butagami briefly hesitates as if considering the use of a secret technique or ultimate move.

However, he decides against it, concluding that this is not yet the time foretold by the prophecy of Shibabawa.

This implies that he knows more about Shibabawa’s apocalyptic prediction than he openly admits.

It also suggests he has a dangerous trump card that may threaten his own life if used.

His calm decision not to use this technique shows his ability to weigh long-term consequences.

Even in battle, he is not reckless; he acts with awareness of a larger, looming crisis.

Extreme Body Transformation

One of Butagami’s strangest traits is his ability to dramatically alter his body volume.

Under normal conditions, he is an enormous, round giant layered with extreme fat.

However, when he reaches a state of extreme starvation, his body shrinks down to the size and shape of an average person.

In this malnourished form, his clothes hang off him so loosely that they are mistaken for a tent.

In the remake storyline, he becomes severely emaciated after Fubuki extracts energy from him to heal the critically wounded Tanktop Master.

His appearance changes so drastically that Sweet Mask, meeting him in this thin form, never realizes he is actually Butagami.

Despite being visibly skeletal, he continues to devour monsters with the same horrifying intensity.

After consuming Gums, he quickly regains his original massive form, implying an unrealistically fast conversion of absorbed energy into muscle and fat.

This body transformation emphasizes his inhuman biology and reinforces how directly his power is tied to nutrition and stored mass.

He is essentially a living battery whose charge level is visible in the size of his body.

Battle with Evil Natural Water

After the complete destruction of the Monster Association, Butagami suspects that Evil Natural Water has survived.

Despite being hospitalized and severely injured, he sneaks out of the hospital and returns to the battlefield ruins.

There, he discovers Evil Natural Water, massively reduced in size after being blown apart by a single punch from Saitama.

Without hesitation, Butagami swallows the creature whole.

Evil Natural Water retaliates from inside his body, firing powerful water lasers that pierce his abdomen and riddling his torso with holes.

Even so, Butagami remains unfazed and continues to digest the creature until it is completely destroyed.

This episode highlights his thoroughness, his refusal to leave threats unfinished, and his willingness to risk his life to eliminate remaining dangers.

It also shows the near-absurd resilience of his body, which withstands lethal internal attacks while still functioning.

Monster Association War

Throughout the Monster Association arc, Butagami repeatedly plays important support and combat roles.

He protects heavily wounded heroes by sheltering them inside his body, moves underground at high speed, and directly engages powerful monsters like Gums.

He displays great presence of mind, calmly assessing situations even while eating or fighting.

He also appears to have insight into Shibabawa’s prophecy and into the broader danger that hangs over Earth.

At one point, he hints at having a dangerous secret technique that could be used in a crisis.

However, he chooses not to use it yet, believing the critical moment foretold by the prophecy has not arrived.

This restraint, combined with his power, frames him as more than a gag character.

He is a mysterious heavyweight whose full capabilities are still not completely revealed.

Repeated Reckless Deployments

Even after sustaining heavy injuries and being outfitted with a tracking device by the Hero Association, Butagami continues to head out to the field whenever needed.

The Association monitors him, likely worried about his condition and his tendency to push himself too far.

Despite this, he still breaks out and participates in dangerous missions, as with Evil Natural Water.

He dismisses the risks and surveillance as simply part of his duty.

He openly states that he does all of this because it is his “responsibility as a hero.”

His actions show that this is not empty rhetoric; he consistently chooses duty over personal safety.

Butagami’s personality contrasts sharply with his monstrous fighting style.

Outside of eating and combat, he is calm, grounded, and surprisingly gentle.

He has strong professional awareness as a hero and a deep sense of responsibility.

He does not hesitate to act, even when it means fighting in a badly wounded state or ignoring medical advice.

He takes care to encourage Child Emperor, supporting the young genius emotionally when needed.

He also remains composed and kind even when people treat him poorly.

In one instance, after rescuing an injured person, he is met not with gratitude but with violence and verbal abuse for “not helping fast enough.”

Rather than getting angry, he responds with quiet encouragement, showing patience and empathy.

Financially, he appears to be well off, as expected of a top-ranked hero.

He does not exploit his appetite to cheat restaurants out of money.

Instead of abusing “ten-person portion challenge” meals to get free food, he pays the full price and orders them multiple times as a convenient way to get lots of food at once.

He approaches these challenges as a practical menu choice, not a scam.

At one such restaurant, Saitama, who is poor and genuinely trying to beat a food challenge to save money, is eating there as well.

Butagami notices that Saitama is close to finishing and discreetly pays for his meal in advance so Saitama can eat without feeling guilty or obligated.

He does this quietly, without seeking recognition.

This small act reveals his considerate nature and shows that he respects fellow heroes, even those whose power he might not fully understand.

Overall, Butagami is a responsible, observant, and kind-hearted hero hidden beneath a gluttonous and monstrous exterior.

He may look like a simple gag character at first glance, but his actions, mysterious abilities, and connection to the prophecy make him one of the more quietly intriguing figures in One-Punch Man.
