Character Setting

Edit

Pazu is the main character in "Castle in the Sky." He is a bright and energetic 12-year-old apprentice mechanic who lives alone after losing his parents. Pazu has a strong sense of justice and dreams of proving that the floating city, Laputa, really exists, to clear his late father's name. His life changes dramatically when he meets Sheeta, and together, they go on an adventure filled with danger, friendship, and discovery.

Pazu is a young boy, 12 or 13 years old.

He is sturdy and healthy thanks to his work in the mines.

He is often seen wearing a hat, goggles, and working clothes suitable for a mechanic.

He normally carries a trumpet, often using it to greet the morning.

Pazu is full of energy and always tries to help others.

He is hardworking, honest, and deeply kind.

Even though he lost both his parents, he does not let sadness control his life.

He is very brave, willing to risk himself to protect Sheeta and fight for what is right.

He is quick-thinking and able to read the mood and intentions of people around him.

Pazu works as an apprentice mechanic in the mines of Slag Valley, a mountain area in the south.

He was left alone after his adventurer father died—his father was blamed for claiming to see Laputa, the floating city.

Pazu lives by himself in the house his parents left behind.

Every morning, he plays his trumpet at sunrise and feeds the doves he keeps.

Because Pazu grew up in the mines, he is very tough and strong.

He has great eyesight and can spot Sheeta from hundreds of meters away, high in a tower.

He is skilled at machinery, capable of repairing engines and even piloting airships and gliders.

Pazu is quick to learn how to operate unfamiliar vehicles, like the ornithopter and flaptter.

He also shows great skill in climbing, brave actions, and creative thinking to solve difficult challenges.

His mentor is Duffi, who teaches him about machines in the mines.

He becomes close friends with Sheeta after saving her.

He teams up with the Dola family, air pirates who help him rescue Sheeta.

He has great respect for his late father and wants to clear his name.

  • Pazu always wears his father’s goggles as a keepsake, but loses them in Laputa during a fight with Muska.
  • He releases his doves when he joins the Dola family, since he can’t take care of them anymore.
  • In the novel’s epilogue, Pazu returns home and keeps in touch with Sheeta through letters, promising to visit her in Gondoa once his ornithopter is done.
  • Even though Dola’s group are pirates, Pazu helps them temporarily, making him an outlaw for a while.

  • "Boss! A girl fell from the sky!"
  • "I won't become a pirate."

Meeting Sheeta

One day, Pazu sees a mysterious girl, Sheeta, floating down from the sky.

He saves her, and they quickly become friends.

Sheeta is being chased by soldiers and pirates because she holds a powerful crystal called the Levistone, which is linked to Laputa.

Trying to Prove His Father

Pazu dreams of building his own flying machine and finding Laputa, just like his father once claimed.

He wants to clear his father’s name, as people called him a liar.

Kidnapped and Rescued

Pazu and Sheeta are captured by the army led by Muska, who is also after Laputa.

Separated from Sheeta, Pazu teams up with the Dola family, a group of pirates who also want to find Laputa.

They work together to rescue Sheeta from the military fortress.

Now or Never Adventure

Pazu joins the Dola family and works as an engine assistant on their airship, the Tiger Moth.

He shows impressive mechanical skills, repairing engines and even climbing dangerous parts of the ship during attacks.

During an attack by the large military airship Goliath, Pazu is separated from Dola’s group but still manages to reach Laputa.

Final Confrontation

In Laputa, Sheeta is captured by Muska.

Pazu bravely breaks into the castle’s center and rescues her.

Together, they say the "Spell of Destruction," causing the core of Laputa to collapse.

Muska’s evil plan is destroyed, and he is lost with the ruins of Laputa, while Pazu and Sheeta survive.

Returning Home

After the adventure, Pazu and Sheeta say goodbye to the Dola family and fly away in a glider.

In the novel, Pazu returns to his normal life, but keeps in touch with Sheeta through letters.

  • Pazu, at one point, becomes a member of the Dola pirates, risking his future to help Sheeta.
  • If discovered, Pazu and Sheeta could have been treated as pirate criminals.
  • Their happy ending was possible only because their enemies perished and the main government forces did not discover them.
  • A famous joke is that Pazu's voice actor later played a boy who wants to be the Pirate King, saying, "I will be the Pirate King," which contrasts with Pazu's words, "I won't become a pirate."
