Character Setting

Edit

Tomi is an anime-original supporting character in the television adaptation of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, appearing in the Mugen Train Arc Episode 1 as an elderly bento seller at the station where the Mugen Train departs.

She is a human woman who runs a long-standing bento shop with her granddaughter Fuku and has a personal history with demon slayers, having been saved twice by members of the Rengoku family.

Tomi is introduced in the television version of the Mugen Train Arc, specifically in Episode 1, which expands on events prior to the main Mugen Train storyline.

She does not appear in the original manga and is therefore an anime-original character created to add emotional depth and local perspective to the arc.

She is an old woman who runs a traditional bento stand that has been passed down through her family for generations.

Together with her granddaughter Fuku, she sells boxed beef hot pot meals (beef hotpot bentos) at the station where the ill-fated Mugen Train departs.

Unlike most civilians, Tomi is aware that demons exist and that there are swordsmen who hunt them.

Her knowledge and instincts about demons stem from a traumatic attack twenty years earlier, when she and her daughter were saved by a demon slayer.

Tomi’s encounter with Kyojuro Rengoku during the Mugen Train investigation allows the story to connect past and present, linking Kyojuro to his father Shinjuro Rengoku and showing how the Rengoku family’s deeds have quietly protected ordinary people.

Her scenes emphasize gratitude, generational bonds, and the hidden cost of the demon slayers’ battles.

Daily Life at the Station

Tomi runs a small but long-established bento business near the station, specializing in beef hotpot bentos.

She sells these bentos as station lunch boxes, carrying them in a street vendor-style case while walking the platform with Fuku.

Because of her age and experience, Tomi has become something like a local grandmother figure.

She worries about Fuku, who insists on helping with the business from early morning until late at night.

Tomi knows about the dangers posed by demons in the area, so she does not want her young granddaughter out too early or too late.

However, Fuku does not believe in demons and instead focuses on practical concerns like their family’s finances.

Fuku’s mother is pregnant, and the family’s main restaurant, run by Fuku’s father, has been struggling with poor sales.

This is why Fuku insists on helping Tomi at the station, even if it means working long hours.

Recently, the station area has been affected by a string of disappearances connected to the Mugen Train, as well as a series of “slasher” attacks.

These incidents have made travelers uneasy, and as a result, Tomi’s bentos are not selling well.

First Meeting with Kyojuro Rengoku

On the day Kyojuro Rengoku arrives to investigate the Mugen Train incidents, Tomi and Fuku are once again selling beef hotpot bentos at the station.

Business is poor when Kyojuro appears and cheerfully offers to buy all of their remaining bentos at once.

Fuku is initially wary of Kyojuro, unsettled by his intense presence and flame-patterned haori.

Tomi gently reassures her granddaughter, telling her he is not a bad person and calming Fuku’s suspicions.

Kyojuro’s bulk purchase coincidentally allows Tomi and Fuku to sell out their stock for the day.

Despite the good sales, Tomi is unsettled after Kyojuro leaves and expresses a bad feeling, saying it is as if a chill runs down her spine.

Sensing something ominous in the air, Tomi decides to close up early, even though selling out is normally a reason to be happy.

Her unease hints at her past encounter with demons and the intuition she has developed since then.

The Slasher Demon Attack

The next day, Tomi again heads to the station to sell bentos, this time with Fuku who stubbornly insists on tagging along.

Unbeknownst to them, the demon responsible for the slasher incidents is targeting bento sellers in revenge for Kyojuro’s interference.

This demon bears a strong disgust toward human food and the smell of cooked meals.

Using the cover of the station’s bustle, he approaches them with the intent to kill.

When the demon suddenly attacks, Fuku is the one in immediate danger.

Reacting quickly, Tomi throws one of her bentos directly at the demon, using his aversion to human food against him.

The smell and presence of the bento cause the demon to recoil in disgust and hesitate.

Tomi takes advantage of that brief moment of hesitation to shout for Fuku to run away and escape.

Fuku manages to flee thanks to Tomi’s quick thinking, but both are still at risk as the demon continues his rampage.

Kyojuro Rengoku then arrives on the scene and rescues Fuku, swiftly confronting the demon.

The confrontation moves into the station area, where Tomi is again threatened when the demon attempts to attack her.

Kyojuro uses his flame-breathing swordsmanship to overpower and behead the slasher demon, saving Tomi’s life as well.

Connection to Shinjuro Rengoku

Once the danger has passed, Tomi is overwhelmed by the trauma of narrowly escaping death again.

At the same time, seeing Kyojuro’s flame-like techniques and his demeanor triggers a powerful memory from twenty years ago.

Back then, Tomi and her daughter (who would later become Fuku’s mother) were attacked by a demon while living in the city.

At that critical moment, they were saved by Shinjuro Rengoku, who was the Flame Hashira at the time.

Because of that incident, Tomi learned that demons are real and that there are demon slayers who risk their lives to defeat them.

She never forgot the man who saved them or the sight of his blazing sword techniques.

When Kyojuro saves her and Fuku, Tomi, shaken from the ordeal and confused by the resemblance, mistakes him for Shinjuro.

Tears in her eyes, she says to him something along the lines of “You are the one who saved us… twice now,” believing she is speaking to the same man from twenty years ago.

Realizing what she means, Kyojuro gently corrects her and explains that the man who saved her previously was his father, Shinjuro Rengoku.

He tells her that he has followed in his father’s footsteps as a demon slayer and that he is honored to have protected her just as his father once did.

This moment deeply links Tomi’s past to Kyojuro’s present, showing how the legacy of the Rengoku family has carried on across generations.

It also gives Kyojuro a rare opportunity to hear how much his father’s actions meant to ordinary people, even as Shinjuro has since fallen into despair.

Sending Kyojuro Off on the Mugen Train

Later that same day, after the slasher demon incident has been resolved, train services on the Mugen Train line resume.

Kyojuro prepares to board the train for his official mission, which will become the central story of the Mugen Train Arc.

Tomi and Fuku visit the platform again, this time not merely as vendors but as people who want to thank their savior.

As a token of gratitude for protecting them, Tomi offers Kyojuro a bento.

Kyojuro happily accepts the bento she gives him.

Then, in his typically generous way, he buys all of the remaining bentos in Tomi’s portable sales box a second time.

This second all-out purchase once again lets Tomi and Fuku sell everything, turning what had been a string of bad business days into an unexpected blessing.

It is also a warm, human moment before Kyojuro departs for a battle from which he will not return.

Before boarding, Kyojuro tells Tomi and Fuku that he will definitely tell his father Shinjuro about them.

He says that Shinjuro will be pleased to hear that the people he saved are still doing well and remain grateful.

Kyojuro and Tomi part on these hopeful words, effectively promising a future reunion or at least a message delivered on their behalf.

However, from the broader perspective of the story, it is unclear whether Tomi and Fuku ever learn that this promise will never be fulfilled due to Kyojuro’s death on the Mugen Train.

The scene of Tomi and Fuku waving goodbye as the Mugen Train departs closes her involvement in the arc.

Their prayers for Kyojuro’s safety and gratitude for both him and Shinjuro give the Mugen Train’s departure a poignant emotional weight.

Tomi is kind-hearted, gentle, and deeply maternal, both toward her own family and toward strangers like Kyojuro.

She carries herself with the warmth of a grandmother who has seen much in life but still chooses to be compassionate.

Her concern for Fuku is constant and genuine.

Even while relying on Fuku’s help for the business, Tomi is anxious about the dangers of early mornings, late nights, and the unseen threats she knows lurk in the world.

Because she has firsthand experience with demons, Tomi is cautious and has strong instincts when something feels wrong.

Her “bad premonitions” about Kyojuro’s visit are not baseless fear but the intuition of someone who has once been caught in a demon attack.

Despite her fear, Tomi does not hesitate to act when Fuku is in danger.

She uses whatever she has on hand—her bento—to protect her granddaughter and distract the demon, even at great risk to herself.

Her gratitude toward those who save her family is deep and enduring.

Twenty years after Shinjuro saved her and her daughter, she still remembers him clearly and becomes emotional when she realizes Kyojuro has done the same for her and Fuku.

Tomi is also humble and respectful toward Kyojuro.

She recognizes his bravery and speaks to him with reverence, while still treating him with the warmth of someone who has known his family’s kindness for decades.

Fuku

Fuku is Tomi’s granddaughter and partner in running the bento stand.

The two of them are very close, with a relationship that blends family affection and workplace cooperation.

Tomi worries about Fuku’s safety and health, wanting her to avoid working such long, tiring hours.

Fuku, however, insists on helping because the family is struggling financially and her mother is pregnant.

Fuku does not believe in demons at first and sees Tomi’s warnings as old-fashioned superstition.

This disbelief creates a quiet gap between their perspectives, even though their bond remains strong.

When the slasher demon attacks, Tomi risks herself to save Fuku, throwing bentos and urging her to escape.

Her actions make it clear that she prioritizes Fuku’s safety above everything else, including her business and her own life.

After Kyojuro rescues them, Tomi and Fuku stand together to thank him.

Their shared gratitude ties them closer and sets them side-by-side as they see Kyojuro off on the Mugen Train.

Shinjuro Rengoku

Shinjuro Rengoku is the former Flame Hashira and Kyojuro’s father.

Twenty years before the Mugen Train events, he saved Tomi and her daughter from a demon attack in the city.

Tomi’s knowledge of demons and demon slayers originates from this encounter.

She never forgot the Flame Hashira who came to their rescue or the way his swordsmanship burned like fire.

In the present, Tomi initially mistakes Kyojuro for Shinjuro because they share the same distinct flame-like appearance and fighting style.

Emotionally overwhelmed, she tells Kyojuro that he has saved her “twice,” blending her old memory of Shinjuro and the current event together.

When Kyojuro explains the truth, Tomi realizes that the man who saved her in the past and the man here now are father and son.

This connection reinforces her respect for the Rengoku family and deepens her gratitude.

Kyojuro promises Tomi that he will tell Shinjuro about her and Fuku, believing his father would be happy to hear that the people he once saved are living well.

Whether Shinjuro ever receives that message or remembers Tomi is left unstated in the story, giving their connection a bittersweet edge.

Kyojuro Rengoku

Kyojuro Rengoku is the Flame Hashira at the time of the Mugen Train Arc and the main demon slayer who interacts with Tomi.

He buys her bentos twice, protects her and Fuku from the slasher demon, and becomes a bridge between Tomi’s past and present.

From Tomi’s perspective, Kyojuro is both a stranger and a reflection of a savior she once knew.

His heroic actions echo Shinjuro’s, reinforcing Tomi’s belief in the courage of the demon slayers.

Tomi shows deep respect and affection toward Kyojuro, thanking him with tears after he rescues them.

She also expresses a sense of awe at his bravery and the way he stands unshaken in front of terrifying demons.

By telling Tomi about his father and where he comes from, Kyojuro honors her memories and the bond she unknowingly shared with his family.

Their short relationship adds emotional weight to Kyojuro’s departure and to the tragedy that the audience knows awaits him.

When Tomi and Fuku hand Kyojuro bentos as a farewell gift, it serves as a quiet, human send-off.

Their hope for his safe return contrasts with the reality that both they and the audience will face later, making her role especially poignant within the Mugen Train Arc.

Tomi is voiced by Kikuko Inoue in the anime adaptation of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

Inoue’s performance emphasizes Tomi’s warmth, age, and emotional vulnerability, particularly in the scenes where she recalls being saved by a demon slayer and when she thanks Kyojuro through tears.
