He has a strong sense of pride due to his position as the eldest son of a third-class noble family, and he possesses an arrogant and sadistic personality, emitting a sinister sword aura. As a result, he not only discriminates against Kirito and Eugeo, who come from commoner backgrounds, but also harasses Kirito by destroying the planter of Zephilia flowers that Kirito had carefully nurtured.

After advancing to the rank of senior swordsman, he attempts to further torment Kirito and the others by using his noble decision-making authority along with Humbert to detain Ronye and Tiese, and tries to rape them in front of Eugeo. Eugeo, breaking the seal on his right eye, cuts off Humbert's left arm. When Kirito arrives, he is delighted to have an excuse to kill Eugeo and Kirito, citing his own twisted sense of justice. However, he is counterattacked by Kirito's continuous use of the Serlut-style secret technique "Whirlwind" (a dual-wielding sword skill from SAO called Cyclone), resulting in both of his arms being severed.
