Tooru Mutsuki is easily recognized by her slender figure, dark skin, and signature eye patch. She stands 165 cm tall and weighs 48 kg. Her heterochromic eyes, particularly her permanent right kagune-eye, are notable features. Mutsuki’s short, dark hair often falls over her face, which she hides behind boyish clothing. Despite being female, she cross-dresses and tries to appear masculine, contributing to her unique charm and mysterious vibe.

Mutsuki is serious, obedient, and extremely timid, especially at first. She has a strong aversion to blood and flesh, which is ironic given her occupation. Intensely loyal to Haise Sasaki—whom she affectionately calls "Sensei"—she struggles with fear and self-doubt. Over the story, Mutsuki gradually becomes more assertive and even aggressive, especially after her gender is revealed. Though once described by instructors as a "bad child," rumors of animal abuse hint at a troubled inner world.

Mutsuki grew up in a nightmarish household, suffering regular abuse from her father and neglect from her mother. Traumatized by the murder of her family at the hands of ghouls, she lost her memory of retaliating violently herself. This murky, unresolved past left her with violent urges and a tendency to hurt animals as a child. She joined the CCG Second Academy and met Haise Sasaki, who left a deep impression on her.

Despite her unusually low Rc value (only 3 during certain events), Mutsuki's kagune—a tail-type resembling an insect—becomes highly versatile as she grows stronger, allowing for advanced manipulation and the ability to imitate others' kagune, such as that of Saiko Yonebayashi. Her quinx weaponry includes Abk Xoul (Ukaku), Iflaft (Ukaku), Black Linsirgnat (Koukaku), and White Rustingnat (Koukaku). Mutsuki can fight ambidextrously and, following traumatic episodes, develops the capacity to regenerate lost limbs using her kagune.

Haise Sasaki is the guiding light in Mutsuki’s life, acting as a mentor and beloved role model. Her deepest emotional connections are to her squadmates, particularly Kuki Urie, with whom she has a complicated, often tense rapport—sometimes as allies, sometimes as rivals. The Quinx Squad forms a surrogate family for her, patching up some of her emotional wounds while also challenging her worldview. Introduction

Mutsuki debuts as a timid Quinx Squad member, deeply fearful and unable to control her kagune or her kagune-eye due to her low Rc value.

Orochi Arc

Tasked with investigating alongside Haise Sasaki, she is kidnapped by Torso after boarding his taxi. Repeated targeting by Torso deepens her trauma, while the inability to manifest her kagune highlights her vulnerability.

Human Auction Arc

While undercover to track down Nutcracker, Mutsuki is auctioned off and purchased by Big Madam. She narrowly escapes thanks to Juuzou Suzuya’s intervention. Seriously injured by Kanae von Rosewald, Mutsuki is rescued by the Quinx Squad. Manipulated by Kuki Urie and forced into combat, her kagune awakens, and her true gender is exposed. Her bravery and information-gathering lead to a two-rank promotion to First-Class Investigator.

Rose Arc

Gaining confidence and strength, Mutsuki proves valuable during the surprise attack by Aogiri Tree and the battle against Grave Robber. During the Tsukiyama Extermination operation, she defeats Noro once, but is gravely wounded and left unconscious.

Spoilers & Psychological Decay

Her childhood reveals are grim: Mutsuki killed her own parents with an axe—a memory she suppressed, instead blaming ghouls for their death. Violent tendencies surface as she abuses animals, ultimately using her knife skills learned from Instructor Tokage. During the auction, Mutsuki survives by eating investigator corpses, unlocking her kagune. After killing Torso, her suppressed killer instinct emerges, sending her on a violent spiral.

Rushima Arc

Transferring from Urie Squad to Hachikawa Squad, she plays a key support role. Captured by Torso again, Mutsuki loses all her limbs, but kills him and uses her kagune to regenerate, snapping mentally. From here, her kagune grows more ferocious. She tries to kill Akira Mado, but is stopped by the intervention of Floppy.

Black Goat vs. Clown Arc

Now part of Suzuya Squad, Mutsuki leads Kiyoko Aura in a tough battle against the Clowns, pursuing a fleeing Uta (disguised clone). Her infatuation with Haise Sasaki becomes obsessive, and she suggests to Aura they assassinate the One-Eyed King.

Koryu Nogi Arc

Ordered by Director Furuta to train the Oggai Squad, she desperately seeks a reunion and reconciliation with Sasaki, but loses him due to the squad's rebellion. Mutsuki confesses her love for Sasaki to Kuki Urie and infiltrates the Black Goat as a spy. Attempting to kill Touka Kirishima and Ken Kaneki, she is defeated, then faces off against Urie and Saiko. Although she nearly succumbs to her murderous urges, Urie and Saiko’s resolve moves her, prompting a failed suicide attempt. She chooses to continue fighting as a Qs member.

Epilogue

After the war, Mutsuki is transferred to a regional branch and eventually promoted to Special-Class Investigator.
