One of the main characters of the series. A male student in Class 2-B → Class 3-A of the high school division. He is the student council president and was previously the student council secretary. Born on September 9th, blood type O.
He lives with his father and younger sister. His father looks very similar to him, and his sister attends the middle school division of the same academy. He refers to himself as "ore." Although his hair color is light, it is merely a manga-style expression, and he is purely Japanese. Due to long hours of studying, he has become nearsighted and is self-conscious about his tired-looking eyes caused by extreme sleep deprivation. His favorite food is oysters. He comes from a general social class, which is a minority in the academy, and entered from an external school starting in high school. He commutes (a two-hour round trip) using a mom's bike. He does not conform to those around him and did not own a smartphone for a while after the story began. He considers himself a "genius" and consistently maintains the top academic rank in the academy, boasting a deviation score of around 77, and competes for the top spot in national mock exams. Additionally, his exemplary behavior has earned him the admiration of the students, who see him in an idealized light, believing he has no worldly desires.
He has obtained numerous qualifications, including the second level of the Kanji Kentei, the pre-first level of the Eiken, a hazardous materials handler (乙4), and a chick sexer. He is also skilled in cooking, making his own bento (though he cannot handle raw fish). Despite appearing perfect, he has many weaknesses: he is bad at solving riddles, a poor swimmer to the point of nearly drowning in his home bath, has a strong aversion to insects, is tone-deaf to the extent that Chika compares his singing to "sea cucumber innards," lacks rhythm and cannot dance the Soran Bushi properly, is terrible at rapping, has the fashion sense of a middle schooler, cannot make balloon art without repeatedly popping the balloons, and cannot wear contact lenses due to extreme fear despite his poor eyesight. However, he makes extraordinary efforts to overcome these weaknesses to maintain his image, and some have improved significantly. Although he is clumsy in sports, this is due to a lack of sense, and his basic physical strength and abilities are very high due to his bike commute and part-time jobs, including newspaper delivery and moving work. His lack of fashion sense is due to his family's poverty, and he wears his school uniform even in private life. He also has many stories of frugality, such as making golden fried rice (fried rice without ingredients) and adding bean sprouts and sausages to Peyoung (cup yakisoba) while making soup with the discarded hot water by adding consommé.
In contrast to Kaguya, who is naturally gifted, he is a "genius through hard work," studying for 10 hours a day and working part-time in his spare time. His love for effort and work has become an addiction, and he sometimes involves others without ill intent. His chronic sleep deprivation from his busy schedule causes him to fall asleep suddenly if he does not consume caffeine every three hours.
Maintaining the top academic rank in the academy comes with immense pressure. His ranks in the first year were 9th → 4th → 1st. He is acutely aware that his only weapon is his studies, unlike the versatile Kaguya, and believes that if he loses to Kaguya in academics, she will drift away to a distant world. Therefore, he strives to maintain grades that surpass hers. However, he never shows this psychological pressure to others.
Aside from his high pride and slight stubbornness, he is an extremely kind person, sincerely helping with others' concerns and problems. He cannot ignore people in trouble and is skilled at finding such individuals. He also has a romantic side, enjoying stargazing, and has an artistic temperament. He sometimes utters cheesy lines, which he later regrets as "cringe-worthy" when he calms down.
A week after entering Shuchiin Academy, he participated in a pond cleaning volunteer activity recommended by the previous student council president. He fell for Kaguya when she saved a girl who had fallen into the pond and decided to aim for the student council president. Since then, he has had feelings for Kaguya but worries about the difference in their family backgrounds and talents, believing that confessing himself would not make them equals. Therefore, he tries to make Kaguya confess to him. He is misunderstood by those around him as being experienced in love, and although he is popular with girls, they have all been eccentric, so he has never dated anyone. The narration describes him as a "monster virgin," with his confidence in love growing despite his lack of experience, leading to a love perspective that even Kaguya finds absurd.
He often imagines Kaguya looking at him with contempt and saying, "How cute..." This image seems to come from the Ice Kaguya era, and in the story, he was not actually called "How cute..." in a derogatory sense until Chapter 132 (Volume 15, Chapter 142).
His home environment before moving was poor, and he shared a room with his sister, separated by a curtain.
In the live-action adaptation, he is portrayed by Shō Hirano, but in the story, Miko says, "His (Shirogane's) face is not my type at all," and "My favorite face is Shō Hirano's."
His dream is to study management at a top university and reclaim his father's company, which was taken by the Shinomiya Group.
