Hamaguchi is a tall boy from Nishikata’s neighboring class. He is good friends with Nishikata, Kimura, and Takao. Even though he looks cool, he does not seem to be very popular. Hamaguchi has a crush on his childhood friend Houjou, but is too shy to confess his feelings directly. Trying to look more mature for her, he listens to Kimura’s advice and starts carrying black canned coffee, acting “grown-up” whenever she is around. His story varies in the manga, anime, and live-action versions, showing both hopeful and awkward moments in his relationship with Houjou.

Manga: A Little Progress
In the final chapter of the manga, Hamaguchi is seen going to a summer festival with Houjou.
This hints that they might have finally become a couple.
Anime: No Progress
In the anime, Hamaguchi goes shopping with Houjou before summer school.
He still cannot confess during summer vacation.
He feels frustrated and hopeless about his crush.
Live-Action: Ups and Downs
In the live-action adaptation, Hamaguchi starts dating Houjou after middle school.
They break up and get back together several times because of arguments.
By the time of the movie, set ten years later, they are separated.
Hamaguchi still has feelings for Houjou and even tries to get back together at a class reunion while he is drunk.
Hamaguchi does not appear in the (ex)Takagi-san spin-off, which takes place about ten years later.
