Founding of Shoka Sonjuku
Shouyou Yoshida created a small school called Shoka Sonjuku to teach children who had no money or family.
He took in Gintoki Sakata after seeing him survive on a battlefield by scavenging supplies from the dead.
He gave Gintoki a sword and taught him the path of a samurai.
The Big Fire and the Start of the War
According to official character books, the burning of Shoka Sonjuku pushed Gintoki and his friends into joining the anti-government war.
On stage plays, scenes of the fire are included in the beginning to show the school's destruction.
Capture and the Tragic Choice
The government began arresting people seen as a threat during an event called the Great Prison Purge.
Shouyou Yoshida was caught and locked away.
Gintoki, Katsura, and Takasugi joined the war, hoping to save him.
However, Gintoki was cornered and forced to make a horrible choice: kill his own teacher to save his friends.
Shouyou smiled, thanked Gintoki, and let him take his life—so Gintoki wouldn't have to watch his friends die or betray their promise to protect each other.
Katsura and Takasugi felt responsible for this tragedy, and their friendship with Gintoki was damaged.
After his capture, Shouyou kept teaching, even while locked up, and gave lessons to Nobume Imai as a child.
Secret Past and Naraku
A deeper secret is revealed: Shouyou Yoshida was once the head of a shadowy group called Naraku, together with Oboro.
He later escaped Naraku and lived his life as the kind teacher Shouyou.
When he died, his gentle personality was lost, but it still touched even his dark side (known as Utsuro).
Later Events and Final Farewell
During the final arc, the part of Shouyou within Utsuro helped Gintoki win.
Two years later, Utsuro was reborn as a baby and was taken in by Gintoki.
Shouyou's kindness returned, but he was attacked by Naraku and gave away his heart to save everyone.
He ended up being used by the Star Fragment Sect, was hurt again, but was finally rescued by Gintoki and his friends.
In his last moments, he made the energy at the Terminal go backward to save the world and watched Gintoki grow up before peacefully passing away.
