Ai Haibara

Ai Haibara has wavy, reddish-brown hair and sharp eyes, which give her a mature, striking look even as a child. She is usually seen wearing simple, stylish clothes and is a bit taller than her fellow Detective Boys Ayumi and Conan, but shorter than Mitsuhiko. Her face looks Japanese, and most people don't notice her mixed heritage right away.

Ai is cool, quiet, and often distant, especially when she meets new people. She is very clever, sometimes sarcastic, and dislikes showing her true emotions. Over time, thanks to her friends, she starts opening up and expresses more feelings. While often serious, she can act playful, show excitement for cute things, and tease her friends. She’s very sensitive when it comes to her sister and is easily moved by acts of kindness. Despite her intelligence, Ai can be stubborn, dislikes losing, and sometimes puts herself in dangerous situations to help her friends.

Ai’s real name is Shiho Miyano. Her father was Japanese, and her mother was a quarter English, making Ai part British. Both her parents died when she was a baby, and she and her older sister Akemi were raised by the Black Organization. Ai became a leading scientist and had special treatment within the group. Most of her research was forced, including work on the mysterious APTX4869 drug. After her sister was killed by the Organization as punishment, Ai defied her bosses, took the risky drug herself, and turned into a child, which let her escape.

Ai is a genius in chemistry and pharmacology, able to create and understand complex drugs like APTX4869 and its antidote. She is also skilled with computers, can understand English and some Russian, and is quick to solve scientific or physical puzzles. Although not physically strong like Conan, her logical thinking often helps the Detective Boys in their cases.

Detective Boys

Ai attends Teitan Elementary School and is friends with Conan Edogawa, Ayumi Yoshida, George Kojima, and Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya. She was distant at first but developed close bonds, especially with Ayumi, who is like her best friend.

Conan Edogawa / Jimmy Kudo

Ai knows Conan’s true identity from the start—both share the secret of turning into children after taking APTX4869. Their relationship begins with some tension, but eventually, they trust each other deeply and work as a team. Ai sometimes shows hints of affection or jealousy towards Conan.

Ayumi Yoshida

Ayumi admires Ai and calls her “Ai-chan.” Ai opens up most with Ayumi, showing her softer side.

Hershel Agasa

Agasa is her guardian and the first person who helped her after her transformation. He’s like a father figure, and Ai depends on him for support and a safe home.

Rachel Moore

Ai feels jealous of Rachel at first, since Conan likes her, but later befriends her and cares deeply about her happiness.

Black Organization

Ai was known in the Organization as “Sherry.” She fears and hates the Organization members, especially Gin, who killed her sister, and Vermouth, who wants Ai dead for secret reasons. Her escape from them is still risky since some members know her childhood face.

She has connections to many key figures, such as Harley Hartwell and Serena Sebastian, but usually keeps her distance. Ai is a big fan of soccer player Ryusuke Higo and quietly adores celebrities.

From Scientist to Child

Ai Haibara was born Shiho Miyano. Both of her parents were scientists working for the Black Organization. After their death, Ai joined the Organization and became the lead scientist on Project APTX4869, a drug that was supposed to have a mysterious purpose. When her older sister Akemi was killed for trying to leave the Organization, Ai refused to continue her research. She was locked up as punishment.

Fearing for her life, Ai decided to take APTX4869, the same drug that shrank Jimmy Kudo into a child. She expected to die but instead turned into a child, managed to escape through a trash chute, and wandered to Jimmy's house, where Hershel Agasa took her in.

Life as Ai Haibara

Now with a new name, Ai enrolls at Teitan Elementary and hides from the Organization. She helps Conan and joins the Detective Boys, using her intelligence to help solve cases. She’s always careful, knowing the Organization might find her.

Struggle With the Organization

Ai is always worried about being found by Gin, Vermouth, or other Organization members. Some, like Piško, recognize her. Her knowledge of APTX4869 is sought by both friends and enemies. Conan sometimes relies on her advice during dangerous investigations involving the Organization.

Changes in Personality

Spending time with the Detective Boys, Ai slowly warms up, starts to enjoy normal life, and takes pleasure in little joys—like soccer games and cute accessories. Despite wanting to blend in, she keeps her hair wavy, which sometimes puts her at risk.

Ongoing Mystery

Many secrets about the Organization, her family, and the real purpose of the drug remain unsolved. Ai often hides key information even from her friends, making her story complex and full of suspense.

Ai’s popularity is very high among fans of Case Closed, often ranking in the top three in official polls. Creator Gosho Aoyama himself was surprised by her popularity and credits her voice actress for much of her appeal. She plays a central role in many anime original episodes and movies, and her character design is based on Tetsu Morohata from Aoyama’s earlier manga, Yaiba. Ai is called the "100 billion yen girl" after the movie “Black Iron Submarine” went over 10 billion yen in ticket sales.
