Tooru Honda

Tooru Honda has chestnut brown hair and eyes. In the first anime series, her eyes are shown as blue-green. She usually wears her school uniform and gives off a gentle, soft look.

Tooru is bright, hardworking, and incredibly kind. She always thinks about others before herself and has a gentle way of speaking that she learned from her father. Even when acting, she finds it hard to be angry or mean. Her kindness often makes people feel at ease.

Although she sometimes seems a bit air-headed and naïve, Tooru is very strong-willed. She describes herself as "stubborn." She is very forgiving and can accept almost anything. Even so, she often misunderstands things or acts in a quirky, offbeat way.

Tooru is very caring, almost like a mother to her friends. She avoids conflict and never wants to hurt anyone. Despite being bullied and having very few caring relatives, she never gives up and keeps trying her best.

After her parents died, Tooru was taken in by her grandfather. When her grandfather’s house was under renovation, she lived in a tent all by herself in a mountain on the Souma family property. She was soon invited by Shigure Souma to live at his house, where she became responsible for all the housework.

Tooru works hard at a building cleaning job to support herself. She does this while going to Kaibara High School, which has slightly higher-level classes, so her grades are below average—especially in physics and English.

She was raised alone by her mother, Kyouko Honda, after her father Katsuya Honda passed away when Tooru was very young. Because of this, she treasures the memories and lessons from her mother. She also admires a mysterious "boy with a hat" who helped her when she was lost as a child. She still keeps the hat he gave her.

As a child, her family was poor, and her mother was once a delinquent, leading relatives to look down on them. Her mother was cut off from her parents, so Tooru was often alone, except for her grandfather and mom, and faced bullying at school.

Tooru is born in the year of the dog, but as a child, she loved the story of the zodiac and wanted to be the year of the cat because she thought the cat was cute and pitiful.

Tooru is great at housework—cooking, cleaning, laundry, and more. She is reliable and always takes care of those around her. Her understanding heart helps her connect with people who are suffering or lonely.

She becomes close to members of the Souma family after moving in with them. Over time, she develops deep feelings for Kyou Souma. Her friendship with Yuki Souma and Kyou grows into something like a family. She is also supportive of her friends Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima.

Tooru loves her mother deeply and misses her every day after her death. She also remembers and admires the "boy with a hat" from her childhood, who turns out to be an important character in her story.

A New Beginning

After her mom’s death, Tooru lives in a tent, hiding this from everyone. When Yuki Souma and Shigure Souma find out, they invite her to live with them.

Living with the Soumas

Tooru becomes part of the Souma household. She soon learns the secret of the zodiac curse: some Soumas turn into animals of the zodiac when hugged by the opposite sex. Meeting these "cursed" family members, she wants to help them break free from their pain.

Sharing Her Warmth

Even though Tooru is often bullied or feels left out, she never loses hope. She helps the Soumas face their troubles by showing kindness and being someone they can trust.

Facing Her Own Fears

After her mother dies, Tooru is afraid to let go of her memories. She fears that loving someone else—like Kyou—means betraying her mom. She also has trauma from almost being left alone by her mother when she was very young.

Her unique way of speaking is inspired by her late father, hoping to feel closer to him.

Understanding and Forgiving

When Tooru learns that Kyou was involved with her mother’s accident, she still accepts him. She realizes her true feelings for Kyou are not just sympathy—she truly loves him.

A New Friendship

After a fight with Kyou, Tooru meets Akito Souma, who is suffering from loneliness. Seeing Akito’s pain, Tooru wishes to be her friend, offering understanding and wanting to be by her side as an equal.

Happy Ending

Tooru gets injured in a landslide but survives. After she is released from the hospital, Kyou confesses his feelings, and they become a couple. In the final chapter, Yuki tells her she was like a mother to him and calls her "Tooru" for the first time.

After graduating high school, Tooru and Kyou leave Shigure’s house together. They eventually get married in a traditional wedding and have two sons and a daughter. Their eldest son, Hajime, appears as a regular character in the sequel "Fruits Basket: another."
