Character Setting

Edit

Eris Boreas Greyrat is a major heroine from the series Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, an upper noble lady of the Asura Kingdom’s Boreas Greyrat family and the hot‑blooded older cousin of the protagonist Rudeus Greyrat.

Eris is a human noblewoman from the Asura Kingdom and the only daughter of the Boreas Greyrat house.

She is Rudeus Greyrat’s second cousin and two years older than him.

She starts out as a notoriously violent noble girl, expelled from her academy and known as a “mad dog” for her aggressiveness.

After Rudeus becomes her private tutor, she grows into a powerful swordswoman whose guiding motto is to “protect the people important to her.”

Eris travels with Rudeus and Ruijerd Superdia across the Demon Continent after the Fittoa Region Displacement Incident.

Later, misunderstanding Rudeus’s intentions and feeling like a burden, she leaves to train at the Holy Land of the Sword and dedicates herself to becoming strong enough to stand beside him.

She is also the protagonist of the spinoff comic “Mushoku Tensei: Eris Works Herself to the Bone.”

In an online popularity poll by Netorabo for Mushoku Tensei characters, she ranked second.

Upon adulthood she drops her middle name “Boreas” and simply calls herself Eris Greyrat.

However, in many fan works she is still labeled as Eris Boreas Greyrat even after her coming of age.

Eris is a strikingly beautiful girl with wavy, vivid crimson hair that is her trademark.

Among the main heroines, she is notably the most well‑endowed and is often pointed out as the only clearly “busty” heroine.

Her looks attract many admirers, including Kurt, Cliff Grimoire, and Luke Notos Greyrat, who either confess to her or clearly show affection.

These confessions often come after she has already punched them, implying that even her fierce personality is part of her charm in their eyes.

In battle, her bloodlust is so intense that she can appear even more terrifying than her beastwoman mentor Ghislaine Dedoldia.

Her killing intent can overwhelm opponents and cloud their judgment, evoking the feeling of some curse‑bearer whose very presence distorts a fight.

She often dresses for practicality rather than elegance, wearing clothes suited to movement and combat rather than ornate noble dresses.

Eris does not fuss over fancy meals or luxurious beds, and she sometimes finds Rudeus’s preference for good food and comfortable inns to be “picky” or indulgent.

Eris is famous for her violent temperament and short fuse, to the point that people call her a “mad dog.”

She was expelled from a noble academy due to repeated violent incidents and had sent most of her previous tutors to the hospital.

Despite that, she is not a simple bully who uses force to dominate others.

If someone explains the reasons behind something clearly, she will accept it, even if it is unpleasant for her, and follow through with surprising earnestness.

Her core motto is “protect the people important to me.”

For family and those she holds dear, she will not hit them without cause, and she willingly puts herself in harm’s way if it means they can be safe.

After she comes to love Rudeus, she only hits him when he crosses the line with sexual harassment or says something truly provoking.

When someone insulted her beloved sword master Ghislaine Dedoldia, she restrained herself from punching them, understanding that violence would only validate their insults, and instead argued back while crying.

Eris is straightforward and not good at complicated speech, but her affection is honest and intense.

When she likes someone, she praises them openly and enthusiastically rather than hiding her feelings.

She does not lash out in jealous fits when Rudeus is with other women.

At most, she will glare at them or look displeased, but she does not do the stereotypical “jealousy punch” often associated with violent heroines.

Most of her violence has clear triggers: repeated mockery, severe insults, or sexual harassment.

The real problem is that once she starts, she often goes too far, pinning someone down and continuing to beat them even after they have already been knocked out.

With family and close friends, however, she can hold back and rarely hits them seriously.

Those who know her well generally are not afraid of her and can interact normally.

She tends not to brood over things, with a quick emotional reset and little tendency to hold grudges about everyday annoyances.

However, if someone harms or deeply hurts a person she cares about, she will continue to harbor hostility toward that person even after the immediate issue is “resolved.”

Rudeus once likened her not to a spoiled noble lady, but to the protagonist of a delinquent manga.

Her basic stance is “if someone picks a fight, I’ll take it” and “anyone who harms my people will not be forgiven.”

She does not think of herself as clever and is comfortable leaving complex plans and strategy to Rudeus or other trusted companions.

If things go badly, she generally accepts the outcome without whining, reasoning that there was nothing she personally could have done better.

Though she is a noble daughter, she is not overly attached to noble decorum or status.

Her driving ambition is not prestige but strength—specifically, enough strength to protect those important to her and fight alongside Rudeus.

Eris was born into the Boreas branch of the Greyrat family, high nobles in the Asura Kingdom.

Her grandfather Sauros Boreas Greyrat doted on her and defended her ferocity as the proper temperament for an Asuran noble.

Because her parents Philip Boreas Greyrat and Hilda Boreas Greyrat, as well as Sauros, indulged her strong personality for years, her violent behavior went unchecked.

They nevertheless worried that she might not fit the refined expectations of noble society and considered that she might become an adventurer instead.

Before Rudeus, multiple tutors tried to educate her but were all driven away, often quite literally beaten into resigning.

The only ones she tolerated were the beastwoman “Sword King” Ghislaine Dedoldia, who taught her swordsmanship and served as her bodyguard, and her wet nurse Edna Leylune.

When Rudeus became her private tutor, he taught her reading, writing, arithmetic, and basic magic.

After he clearly explained why these studies were necessary, Eris accepted them and began to study seriously.

In the original timeline where Rudeus never reincarnates, she grows into a royal guard knight, proving she could adapt to a disciplined life when given a proper path.

In the main story timeline, her relationship with Rudeus is what truly redirects and refines her motivation toward protecting others and becoming a first‑rate warrior.

Rudeus Greyrat starts out as Eris’s private tutor, and she initially resents him for his smugness and confidence despite being younger.

Her irritation turns to respect as she sees his high ability, endless effort, and refusal to give up on teaching her even when she is difficult.

Eris gradually falls in love with Rudeus, admiring both his talents and his kindness in never abandoning her as “dead weight.”

Because Rudeus is her first love and first serious emotional anchor outside her family, her feelings for him are intense and pure, even if she struggles to express them in words.

She decides that since Rudeus is gifted with magic and intellect, she will focus on the one field where she can surpass him: swordsmanship.

Her goal becomes clear—gain enough strength with the sword that she can stand and fight alongside him as an equal.

When she senses that Rudeus is moving ahead of her in power and experience, she feels anxious and useless.

These feelings intensify during and after their travels on the Demon Continent, particularly when she sees him nearly die while she can do little to change the outcome.

Later, when Rudeus begins learning the chaotic magic technique used by Orsted, she mistakenly believes he intends to challenge Orsted again.

Terrified of being a burden in such a confrontation, she chooses to leave him and train at the Holy Land of the Sword so she can truly protect him next time.

Even when she is willing to die to delay an enemy so Rudeus can win, she is not acting out of martyrdom so much as sheer loyalty.

To her, if her death means Rudeus lives and triumphs, that is an acceptable trade.

Eris and Rudeus are caught in the Fittoa Region Displacement Incident, a catastrophe that teleports them to the Demon Continent.

There, they meet Ruijerd Superdia, a warrior of the feared Superd race, who becomes their companion and mentor.

During their long journey back toward the Fittoa Region, Ruijerd teaches Eris various demon combat techniques and battlefield experience.

She steadily grows stronger, but her perception lags behind her actual ability, and she frequently feels like she is only being protected rather than contributing.

Rudeus also later acquires a “foresight eye,” boosting his combat awareness and making Eris feel that the gap between them is widening further.

A battle beneath a red dragon’s lower jaw, in which Rudeus is nearly killed by Orsted, deeply traumatizes her and drives home just how powerless she still feels.

By the time they finally reach the Fittoa Region, they discover that Eris’s parents and grandfather have died.

This double blow of personal grief and lingering feelings of weakness sets the stage for her decision to leave and train.

When she then sees Rudeus training in the chaotic spell Orsted used, she misunderstands his intentions as preparing for a rematch against a being who nearly killed him.

In her mind, the only way not to drag him down is to become so strong with the sword that she can stand in front of that threat instead of behind him.

Eris’s main style is Sword God Style, the same school taught by Ghislaine Dedoldia.

Over time she also learns demon combat methods and techniques from other schools, so her style eventually becomes a hybrid rather than “pure” Sword God.

Her temperament is a perfect match for the aggressive, offense‑oriented Sword God Style.

Conversely, she struggles with Water God Style, which emphasizes patience and defense, and finds herself unable to properly master its techniques.

In combat, she specializes in powerful overhead blows and an unusual rhythm that throws off an opponent’s timing and guard.

Her attacks are direct and overwhelming, but not mindless—she skillfully uses feints, tempo changes, and footwork learned from her mentors.

Thanks to Rudeus’s teaching, Eris can use basic fire, water, and wind magic at the elementary level.

However, since a Sword God Style swordsman favors close‑range aggression while magicians fight at range, she practically never uses magic in real combat.

At around fifteen years old, she is already the strongest among the main heroines in pure close‑quarters combat.

Despite this, she feels overshadowed by Rudeus’s versatile power and is frustrated by her perceived inability to protect him in truly dangerous situations.

Her core battle philosophy is not “defeat the enemy” but “protect the people I care about.”

If a fight does not directly threaten them, she is not obsessed with victory for its own sake and can accept defeat without clinging to pride.

Both Ghislaine Dedoldia and Ruijerd Superdia recognize her extraordinary talent and believe she can surpass even themselves.

Combined with her relentless work ethic and refusal to yield, Eris has one of the highest ceilings of any mortal fighter in the setting.

Main Techniques

Silent Blade

This is an advanced Sword God Style technique.

The user moves with such speed and precision that the blade cuts without producing any audible wind or swishing sound.

Silent Blade is considered a lower‑tier technique compared to the pinnacle move “Light Blade,” but it has the advantage of being usable one‑handed.

Eris employs it to catch opponents off guard, striking faster than their senses can properly process.

Boreas Punch

This is a hand‑to‑hand technique passed down in the Boreas Greyrat family.

The user targets the point of the opponent’s chin with a focused punch, aiming to knock them out in a single blow.

Eris uses Boreas Punch both in rough brawls and as a sudden finishing move when unarmed.

Given her physical strength, a properly landed Boreas Punch can knock out even a trained fighter instantly.

Nameless Sword

Eris’s main weapon is a short, wide, single‑edged blade about sixty centimeters long, shaped similarly to a cutlass.

She received it on the Demon Continent from Rowin Migurdia.

The sword was forged by Julian Harrisco, a legendary “master craftsman of the demon realm.”

While it is not a magic sword and has no special supernatural abilities, its balance and quality are exceptional.

Even the Sword God Gal Farion, a connoisseur who collects swords as a hobby, praises it as a “good sword.”

In Eris’s hands, its lightness and durability perfectly complement her fast, aggressive style.

Beastfolk Hood

This is a cloak with a hood originally intended for beastfolk, with special pockets for animal ears.

Rudeus bought it on the Demon Continent so that Eris’s red hair would attract less attention.

Because it was a gift from Rudeus, Eris cherishes it and wears it frequently while traveling.

It is both sentimental and practical, helping her blend in when needed.

Headband with Metal Plate

Eris also wears a headband in which an iron plate is sewn.

She chose it as a form of lightweight protection that would not interfere with the speed‑centric Sword God Style.

Rudeus and Ruijerd both own similar headbands in different colors.

The three matching pieces help symbolize their bonds as traveling companions.

Rudeus Greyrat

Rudeus Greyrat is Eris’s private tutor, traveling companion, and first love.

He teaches her literacy, arithmetic, and basic magic, and eventually becomes the person she respects and treasures most.

She admires his genius, but even more so his tireless effort and refusal to waste his abilities.

The fact that he never abandons her, even when she feels like a burden, cements her mixture of love, respect, and gratitude.

In contrast to some violent heroines who abuse the protagonist, Eris’s hits are usually responses to clear provocation like harassment or cruel remarks.

Most of the time, she supports him fiercely and wants nothing more than to fight at his side and protect his back.

Ghislaine Dedoldia

Ghislaine Dedoldia is Eris’s sword master, bodyguard, and older‑sister‑like figure.

Eris and her grandfather Sauros once found Ghislaine collapsed and helped her, which created a powerful bond of mutual gratitude.

Ghislaine sees her younger self in Eris and treats her with unusual tenderness and strict but caring discipline.

Eris loves and respects Ghislaine deeply, and even after learning from many other masters, she insists that Ghislaine alone is her true “sword master” (while Rudeus and Ruijerd are “teachers”).

Ruijerd Superdia

Ruijerd Superdia is a warrior of the Superd race who becomes Eris’s comrade on the Demon Continent.

He recognizes her drive to get stronger and teaches her various demon combat methods, tactical thinking, and the mindset of a warrior.

Ruijerd himself can be extremely dangerous when angered, at times arguably more ruthless than Eris.

Still, he values Eris’s straightforwardness and is one of the people who affirm that she can become stronger than he is.

Sauros Boreas Greyrat

Sauros Boreas Greyrat is Eris’s grandfather.

He dotes on her and defends her fierce personality, saying that Asura nobles must be this strong‑willed.

However, he is not blind to her flaws and will scold her when she behaves rudely toward Rudeus, especially when it interferes with her education.

In the anime adaptation, he even gives her a trial at her birthday party, pushing her to grow beyond mere tantrums.

Philip Boreas Greyrat and Hilda Boreas Greyrat

Philip Boreas Greyrat and Hilda Boreas Greyrat are Eris’s parents.

They care about her deeply but are also anxious about the consequences of her violent upbringing.

Because Sauros often excuses Eris’s behavior as acceptable for an Asura noble, they are hesitant to crack down too harshly.

At the same time, Philip pragmatically arranges for Ghislaine to teach Eris swordsmanship, planning for the possibility that Eris will live as an adventurer rather than as a conventional noble lady.

The voice actress for Eris, Ai Kakuma, reportedly watched videos of lions and wolves growling to capture Eris’s feral intensity and vocal tone.

This preparation contributes to Eris’s uniquely wild energy in the animated adaptation.

Fans sometimes refer to Eris as a “violent heroine” in a special sense.

Her aggression goes far beyond the typical slapstick violence seen in some romantic comedies, to the point that she has been jokingly described as embodying “heroine‑class violence.”

Even so, her violence is rarely arbitrary: her punches and beatings almost always have a clear reason, making her anger feel harsh but not entirely unreasonable.

Her sense of justice is blunt, but it is grounded in protecting herself and her loved ones rather than in sadism.

In some anime pin‑ups and promotional art, the animators have emphasized Eris’s muscular, well‑defined abs.

This is partly artistic indulgence and partly a visual way to show how intensely she trains and how physically powerful she is.
