Marulk was rescued by Ouzen after an accident left him stranded, becoming her apprentice. He resides permanently at the Seeker Camp because he has a unique constitution that makes him vulnerable to sunlight, preventing him from living on the surface. Though he works as Ouzen's disciple, it's believed that Ouzen remains with him primarily out of concern for his well-being.
He affectionately refers to Ouzen as "Master," showing deep respect and admiration. As a Blue Whistle, Marulk is considered a full-fledged Cave Raider, granted permission to explore the second layer of the Abyss.
Marulk hails from Juesuku and is the sole survivor of an expedition that challenged the Abyss eight years before the main story's beginning. He maintains a serious and incredibly polite personality, often speaking with formal language even to his friends.
Despite his adorable appearance and demure gestures, Marulk is a boy who uses "boku" as his personal pronoun. This, combined with instances like Jiruo's surprise at his current attire, suggests his identity as male, despite some fan speculation regarding his gender due to certain depictions.
He quickly bonded with Riko and Reg when they visited the base, particularly with Reg, considering them irreplaceable friends. Marulk was deeply saddened when they parted ways. His judgment is highly regarded, with Ouzen herself praising it as "As expected of my disciple."
However, Marulk is also emotionally fragile, perhaps even more so than Reg; he cried during survival training and had to retire, unlike Riko and Reg who completed it. He also blushes when seeing Riko naked, indicating a similar naive innocence to Reg.
Marulk's sensitivity to sunlight is a congenital condition, making him a "Shadow Child"—a term for those born in Juesuku royalty with this vulnerability. It is said that "3000 suns extinguish a Shadow Child," and many die before reaching ten years old. The "Moon's Attire," a traditional children's garment from Juesuku, is believed to protect Shadow Children by deceiving the sun. When he needs to visit the surface in Orth, he uses a parasol for protection.
When Riko and Reg arrived at the Seeker Camp, Marulk was tasked by Ouzen to keep them company. He eagerly suggested, "Well then, let's talk a lot today! Master told me to do so!"
