Masayoshi Komi

Shōko's father. A silent and dandy middle-aged man with a cool and intimidating presence. He has a good relationship with his beloved daughter, and they communicate almost without words, understanding each other through gestures or telepathy-like intuition. His relationship with his son is also not bad. He seems to like sea creatures and is knowledgeable about them, although he once talked about them so passionately that it overwhelmed his children.

During his high school days, he was expressionless and silent, yet a student who displayed a wide variety of talents. His mysterious character attracted his classmate Hideko Niimi, and eventually, Masayoshi, who was also aware of Hideko, confessed to her, leading to their relationship and later marriage. On dates with Hideko, they would ride tandem on a motorcycle.

He learned about his beloved daughter's relationship with Tadano from Manbagi, who was visiting their home. He interrupted Shōko and Tadano's Valentine's date, abducted Tadano when he visited their home, and, accompanied by Shōsuke, went to the aquarium to spend the day and assess Tadano's character. From this incident, he came to acknowledge Tadano and even grew to like him. When they deepened their friendship in the sauna, he pretended to collapse to test Tadano, resulting in Tadano performing artificial respiration as a medical act, thus kissing Tadano before his daughter did.
