Character Setting

Edit

Mariko Konjo is a member of the Seishun Academy and a master of Martial Arts Cheerleading. Her unique style of cheering actually involves fighting and sabotaging the opponents to make sure her team wins. She falls in love with Tatewaki Kuno, and this creates lots of chaos, especially when she faces Akane Tendou and Ranma Saotome. Her energetic cheerleading hides a sneaky and ruthless side, making her both entertaining and dangerous. She appears as a main character in the "Martial Arts Cheer Girl" arc in Ranma ½.

Mariko Konjo is a lively high school girl.

She dresses in a classic cheerleader outfit, often with a big bright smile on her face.

She always carries around pompoms and sometimes a microphone, ready to cheer on her team or do a dramatic performance.

Charming and Positive

Mariko seems super cheerful, outgoing, and kind.

She acts like the main character in a youth sports anime, bringing lots of energy to everything she does.

She often uses her own microphone for flashy announcements as if she’s performing on a stage.

Ruthless and Cunning

Beneath her bright attitude, Mariko is actually ruthless.

She will do anything to help her team win.

She throws objects, uses poisons, and does sneaky things to mess up the other team.

She is not afraid to break rules or seriously hurt others if it helps her friends win.

She always says she does it all for love, making her look like a hero—even when what she does is actually bad.

Martial Arts Cheerleading

Mariko is skilled in a unique form of fighting called Martial Arts Cheerleading.

She uses her cheerleading moves in real fights, attacking other teams with batons, pompoms, and dangerous tricks.

Strategic Sabotage

She is very clever and often finds strange ways to cheat.

She buys off referees, sneaks poisons to rival teams, and plans complicated traps.

Her physical skills are also impressive, so she can easily fight normal students.

Tatewaki Kuno

Mariko falls for Tatewaki Kuno at first sight.

She cheers for him with all her heart, even though he is interested in Ranma (as a girl) and Akane Tendou.

She finds his odd behavior charming, which actually makes her his biggest fan.

Akane Tendou and Ranma Saotome

Mariko sees Akane Tendou as a rival after Akane’s team loses unfairly because of her tricks.

She challenges Ranma Saotome because people think Ranma (as a girl) is Kuno’s favorite.

Together, Akane and Ranma teach Mariko what real partnership and love mean.

"O-H-E-N? No, I’m not cheating. I’m just cheering!"

"K-U-N-O! Go, Kuno, go!"

"Cheering is love. I’ll use any way I can to help the person I cheer for win. Even if people hate me for it. That’s my way of cheering and loving."

"That’s Martial Arts Cheerleading."

"(Cheering… that’s love… always trusting your partner and fighting for their win…)”

"I lost! I lost to your love!!"

"D-E-M-O, don’t give up, Mariko! Go, Mariko!"

The Deadly Cheerleader Appears

Mariko Konjo is a cheerleader from Seishun Academy with a powerful style: Martial Arts Cheerleading.

She helps her team win by attacking their opponents during matches.

She shouts catchy cheers and even uses a microphone to encourage her team.

But what makes her different is how she will cheat, use hidden weapons, and even hurt others to make sure her team wins.

A Match Against Akane’s Team

Akane Tendou helps the Furinkan High School girls’ volleyball team in a match against Seishun Academy.

Mariko’s sneaky tricks put all the Furinkan players out of action except Akane.

Akane complains to the referee and Mariko, but they ignore her.

The referee, secretly working for Mariko, does not count Akane’s protest as a game break, and the Seishun team scores many points while the Furinkan team is helpless.

Akane’s team loses badly, leaving her upset and frustrated.

Mariko Falls in Love with Kuno

After the volleyball match, Mariko sees Tatewaki Kuno for the first time and instantly falls in love.

She even loves that he is interested in multiple people, making her think she truly understands him.

Rivalry with Ranma and Akane

Mariko decides to cheer for Kuno and views female Ranma as a rival for his attention.

She challenges Ranma Saotome and tries to win by using her usual dirty tricks.

The next big match is a kendo (sword fighting) game, but with Mariko involved, it turns into another Martial Arts Cheerleading match.

She even poisons her own team to make sure Kuno, the one she loves, is the only one left to fight.

The Big Battle and Defeat

Ranma struggles against Mariko’s underhanded tactics.

But Akane, disguised as a mysterious swordsman, joins the match secretly.

With teamwork, Ranma and Akane defeat Mariko and show her what real love and partnership are all about.

Mariko, in dramatic style, cries out that she has been beaten by their love.

She finally gives up on her love for Kuno and leaves.

After Her Arc

Mariko does not return in later stories, but her over-the-top cheering style and wild actions make her memorable.

Based on her attitude, it’s likely she never changed her ways.

  • Mariko Konjo also appears as an enemy character in the Game Boy game "Ranma ½ Kakutou Q&A."
  • In the Ranma ½ anime, after Mariko’s story, the original episodes began because the anime caught up to the manga.
  • The story right after Mariko’s first appearance introduces Nodoka Saotome and is the last main story arc of the TV series.
