Gedoumaru is a shikigami who works for Christel Ketsuno, a member of the powerful Ketsuno onmyoji clan. Even though Gedoumaru looks cute in her usual black kimono, her true nature is surprisingly wicked. She is very strong, using a giant metal club much bigger than herself, and her power is said to be similar to that of a demon lord. Gedoumaru was once a troublemaker on Mount Oe during the Heian period, but after being subdued by the Ketsuno clan, she was forced into their service. At first, she underestimated Gintoki Sakata, but her opinion changed after witnessing his bravery. In the end, she comes to respect and serve both Christel and Gintoki.
- Birthday: December 6
- Height: 147 cm
- Weight: 38 kg
Gedoumaru almost always wears a black kimono, which makes her look mysterious and a bit old-fashioned. Even though she usually hides her body shape, when she puts on a T-shirt, it's noticeable that she actually has a large chest for her size. Her weapon is a massive metal club much bigger than herself.
Though she looks adorable, Gedoumaru is known for her very nasty personality. She can lie, trick, and even attack others without a second thought. Being cunning and not afraid to use dirty tricks, she truly lives up to her name. However, deep down, she shows respect and loyalty to those she considers worthy.
In the Heian era, Gedoumaru caused lots of trouble at Mount Oe. Because of her wild behavior, the Ketsuno clan had to step in and capture her. Since then, she has served under Christel Ketsuno, one of the leaders of the clan. Her name and story are inspired by the legendary youth name of the famous Japanese demon, Shuten-douji.
Gedoumaru is extremely strong, using a giant metal club as a weapon. She is able to wipe out multiple demons with one swing. Her true power is so high that even western demons and monsters consider her to be demon-lord level. Even though she is a shikigami and doesn’t use onmyoji magic, her physical strength is more than enough to make her a dangerous opponent.
Gedoumaru is the shikigami of Christel Ketsuno and follows her orders. Even though she starts out thinking Gintoki Sakata is weak, Gedoumaru grows to admire him after seeing how he tries to protect others even without the power of the onmyoji. Eventually, she comes to see Gintoki as a “second master.”
Onmyoji Clan Incident
When Christel Ketsuno needed help at the main home of the Ketsuno family, Gedoumaru was sent to assist. Christel gave Gedoumaru to help Gintoki Sakata and his friends. At first, Gedoumaru thought Gintoki was just weak and silly. However, when Gintoki and the Yorozuya tried to face the powerful Mirino clan (another onmyoji family) even without magical powers, Gedoumaru was impressed by their bravery.
Change of Heart
Seeing how much Gintoki was willing to risk himself for Christel and others, Gedoumaru changed her mind. In the end, she started to respect and even care about Gintoki, calling him her “other master.”
True Strength
According to her western demon “cousins,” Gedoumaru’s power is equal to that of a demon king. This makes her one of the most powerful beings among not only Japanese spirits but also monsters from around the world.
Inspiration and Myth
Gedoumaru is named after the childhood name of Shuten-douji, one of the most famous oni (Japanese demons) in folklore. During the story, she says she comes from Mount Oe, which is also Shuten-douji’s home in the old legends. There is a fun twist because Gintoki Sakata’s name is based on Kintaro, the folk hero who helped defeat Shuten-douji.
- Gedoumaru is modeled after the young name of the famous demon Shuten-douji.
- Her weapon is much larger than her body, showing her amazing strength.
- Gintoki Sakata’s name comes from Kintaro, a hero connected to the legend of Shuten-douji, making their meeting ironic.
