Character Setting

Edit

Okiku is a cursed doll that can talk, move, and even grow her hair, appearing as a minor character in volume 2 of Konohana Kitan and later settling at the hot spring inn Konohanatei.

Okiku was originally a finely crafted traditional Japanese doll made by a famous artisan.

After being rejected and feared by her original owner as creepy, she transformed into a “cursed doll.”

A Buddhist priest, asked to perform a memorial service for her, brought Okiku to the inn Konohanatei.

There she gradually opened up to the fox attendants and ended up living at the inn instead of being laid to rest.

Her name “Okiku” was not given by a creator or priest.

Natsume casually named her that based purely on her appearance as a classic Japanese doll.

Okiku retains the refined, delicate look of a high‑quality traditional doll.

Her features are lifelike enough to be unsettling to someone who is easily spooked.

After moving into Konohanatei, she is dressed in a waitress uniform tailored by Ren.

Her hair, which can grow on its own, is styled into twin tails with tight vertical curls, emphasizing both her cuteness and her eerie nature.

Despite being labeled a “cursed doll,” Okiku is not malicious by default.

Her curse originates more from hurt feelings and rejection than from inherent evil.

She can talk and move freely, and she interacts with the inn staff much like a shy but curious girl.

Over time she becomes more comfortable at Konohanatei, showing that she can be gentle and sociable when accepted.

However, she still carries emotional scars from how she was treated in the past.

This makes her sensitive to how people look at her and how they handle her body, especially her hair.

Natsume

Natsume is the one who casually names her “Okiku.”

The name sticks, giving the doll a simple, human-like identity instead of being just “that cursed doll.”

Sakura

When Okiku first arrives at Konohanatei, Sakura cuts her hair roughly with scissors.

This experience is traumatic for Okiku, leaving her frightened and uncomfortable around Sakura afterward.

Even though her hair can grow back, the memory of that cruel, careless treatment lingers.

Because of this, Sakura is one of the few residents Okiku has difficulty getting along with.

Ren

Ren creates a waitress uniform especially for Okiku, treating her like a proper coworker and resident of the inn.

This gesture helps Okiku feel more accepted and included in daily life at Konohanatei.

Allowing Ren to dress her and restyle her hair shows the level of trust Okiku has developed.

Ren’s care contrasts sharply with the earlier mistreatment Okiku experienced.

Konohanatei and the Priest

The Buddhist priest who brings Okiku to Konohanatei intends to have her properly memorialized.

Instead, Okiku finds a new “home” among the fox attendants.

Konohanatei itself becomes a place of emotional healing for her.

Rather than being feared and discarded, she is given everyday roles and relationships, softening the curse born from loneliness.
