Kabane was born as a half-yokai child of a human and a bloodless demon-yokai called a Cooler.
Before he was old enough to remember his parents, a treasure hunter found him together with a mysterious stone and entrusted him to the treasure hunter’s younger sister.
Because of this, Kabane has no memories of his mother or father.
The surname Kusaka comes from his aunt, the woman who raised him.
His childhood was harsh and close to abusive, leaving him with very little emotional expression.
Fear, disgust, and similar reactions were almost absent from him, giving him an eerie calm even in dangerous situations.
However, Kabane is not emotionless.
He cares deeply for his companions, worries about their safety, and even shows anger when Kon’s life is put at risk by Nobimaru.
After meeting Kohachi Inugami and beginning life with Shiki Tademaru and Akira, Kabane gradually starts to grow as a person.
Through his new companions, he learns the weight of friendship and begins to understand feelings he once barely recognized.

Even if his head is shot or severed, a flame-like force bursts from the wound and restores his body almost instantly.
As long as his head remains, missing body parts can regenerate.
There is currently no clear limit shown to his healing ability.
Because he has no blood, indirect attacks such as poison are ineffective against him.
This makes him extremely difficult to defeat through ordinary biological methods.
Kabane can still be knocked unconscious by impact.
He can also be rendered helpless if his body is confined in a space where regeneration cannot properly occur.
Kabane wears a magatama-shaped stone around his neck called the Life Stone.
This stone suppresses the instincts of the Cooler while also enhancing his abilities.
When the Life Stone is with him, Kabane can use his yokai power while maintaining his sense of self.
It helps him stay in control instead of being swallowed by his monstrous instincts.
If the stone is completely separated from his body, his regeneration weakens.
He may also be consumed by the instincts of the Cooler, transforming into a monstrous form and going berserk.
Because of this, the Life Stone is not just an accessory.
It is the key to Kabane remaining Kabane while drawing on the terrifying power of his yokai blood.
