Character Setting

Edit

Kenichi Natsuki is a supporting character in the light novel series Re:Zero, known as the biological father of Subaru Natsuki and as a larger-than-life, cheerful figure who deeply influences Subaru’s personality and psychology.

Kenichi Natsuki is a highly sociable and free-spirited man who is widely liked by the people around him.

He is characterized by his loud energy, easygoing nature, and a presence that fills any room he enters.

He is married to Naoko Natsuki, and the two have one son, Subaru Natsuki, the protagonist of Re:Zero.

Although he appears only in a specific story arc, his impact on Subaru’s growth is enormous.

Kenichi is an outgoing, bold, and carefree person with a naturally bright temperament.

He is the type who will loudly greet people, joke around, and casually break through social distance.

His behavior is famously over-the-top; he charges into Subaru’s room with a booming “Good moooorning, son!”-style greeting.

Despite his age, he matches or even exceeds Subaru’s hyper energy, making him feel more like an overenthusiastic friend than a typical strict father.

Kenichi is described as having a “sweet” or handsome face, in contrast to Subaru’s somewhat sharp, intimidating eyes.

Subaru’s bad-boy eye shape actually comes from his mother Naoko, while Kenichi is the one who looks like the handsome dad with a warm smile.

He is a devoted “mayonnaise lover,” to the point of it being a defining quirk.

As a member of the Natsuki family, he shares this love of mayonnaise with the rest of the household.

People around him tend to like him quickly because of his openness and lack of pretense.

His boldness can sometimes be overwhelming, but it rarely comes from a bad place; he simply lives at maximum volume.

Kenichi is the father of Subaru Natsuki, Re:Zero’s main protagonist.

His wife is Naoko Natsuki, and together they form the core of the Natsuki family.

Subaru’s tendency to be overly familiar with others and his reckless, charge-ahead behavior are habits he picked up from observing his father.

As a child, Subaru admired Kenichi and consciously imitated his personality and behavior patterns.

Kenichi’s charisma and popularity made Subaru proud, but also quietly pressured him.

Subaru began to feel that he had to live up to his father’s image, to be interesting, likable, and impressive to everyone around him.

This imitation, however, did not always work out in Subaru’s favor.

Where Kenichi’s natural charm drew people in, Subaru’s forced imitation sometimes came off as annoying or try-hard, causing social friction.

Over time, this mismatch became one of the factors leading to Subaru’s growing isolation at school.

The more he tried to be like Kenichi, the more he failed to connect, and the heavier his sense of inferiority became.

Despite this psychological burden, Kenichi himself is not portrayed as malicious or abusive.

He is caring, affectionate, and genuinely loves Subaru, even if he does not fully understand his son’s inner struggles.

Appearance in the Sanctuary Arc

Kenichi appears during the Sanctuary arc (Arc 4) of Re:Zero.

His role is tied to the first trial in the tomb of Echidna, also known as the “trial to face one’s past.”

Inside Echidna’s tomb, Subaru is forced to confront the painful roots of his past.

This includes his “cringe-worthy” behavior, emotional scars, and the period that led to his withdrawal from society.

Within this recreated past, Kenichi appears as part of a memory-based, illusionary world constructed from Subaru’s mind.

There, father and son have a heartfelt conversation, which becomes a turning point for Subaru.

Subaru’s fear of disappointing Kenichi and his dread of betraying his father’s expectations had become a heavy chain around his heart.

These fears contributed to his withdrawal and to his reluctance to face reality.

Through their talk in the trial, Kenichi gives Subaru the emotional push he needs to confront those fears.

He helps Subaru realize that he does not have to be a perfect copy of his father and that it is okay to walk his own path.

At this point in the series, Subaru has already met people in the other world who matter deeply to him, including someone he wants to risk everything to save and a girl who gave him courage and emotional support.

Because of these experiences, the “answer” Subaru chooses in the trial is, in a sense, decided from the very beginning: he wants to move forward, not backward.

Illusion Versus Reality

It is crucial to note that the Kenichi who appears in the Sanctuary trial is not the real Kenichi.

He is an illusion, a construct created by Echidna based on Subaru’s memories, idealizations, and inner desires.

The trial world is designed to be “convenient” for Subaru, presenting an idealized version of his family and past.

Kenichi and Naoko, in that space, speak words that perfectly fit Subaru’s emotional needs because they are born from his own heart.

Everything they say and do in the tomb is technically false, a reproduction rather than an independent consciousness.

From an objective viewpoint, their dialogue is just Subaru’s mind talking to itself through familiar faces.

However, the emotional impact on Subaru is very real.

The trial allows him to finally put his past in order, accept his failures, and step forward without being chained down by guilt and inferiority.

The Real Kenichi’s Situation

Outside of the illusion, in the real world of Subaru’s original life, Kenichi and Naoko have no idea what has happened to their son.

From their perspective, Subaru simply vanished one day, transported to another world without any explanation.

They do not know that Subaru is fighting for his life in a different world.

All they can do in reality is worry and wonder where their missing son has gone.

The kind and encouraging words they speak in the trial are, in truth, only reproductions of what Subaru believes they would say.

Even so, because these words arise from Subaru’s genuine understanding of his parents, they feel emotionally authentic to him.

By the end of the trial, Subaru successfully “settles” his past.

He accepts the love of his parents—real and imagined—and chooses to live forward in the other world with his own will.

Kenichi is voiced by Kousuke Toriumi in adaptations, giving him a smooth yet energetic vocal presence.

This performance captures both his playful loudness and his underlying warmth.

His iconic greeting to Subaru is an exaggerated, drawn-out “Good morning, son!” shouted with ridiculous enthusiasm.

This line perfectly showcases his shameless affection and his tendency to steamroll over normal levels of energy.

Kenichi’s obsession with mayonnaise marks him as a full-fledged member of the Natsuki family mayonnaise cult.

This little quirk adds a comedic flavor to his characterization and helps keep his scenes light even when the themes are serious.

Though he appears only briefly, Kenichi serves as a symbolic figure representing Subaru’s origin, burdens, and unresolved issues.

Once Subaru has truly faced Kenichi—even a recreated version—he is finally able to move on from being “the son imitating his father” to being himself.
