Subaru Natsuki

The protagonist of the work. Born on April 1st. A boy with short black hair, an ordinary face, and a muscular build. He is faster than the average Japanese person and is characterized by his sharp eyes (sanpaku eyes). He is 17 years old (at the start). He lives with his father and mother as a family of three. He led a lazy life, sleeping and playing as much as he wanted without attending school. His motto is "If you're unsure whether to do something or not, don't do it." He has a tendency towards chuunibyou and is knowledgeable about mythology and star names. During junior high, he was a member of the kendo club and has the courage and strength to win a fight against three street thugs barehanded, but he doesn't have any outstanding physical skills. He has a personality that disregards the atmosphere and irritates others with his playful attitude, but on the other hand, he is deeply compassionate and will not hesitate to sacrifice himself to protect those he cares about.

One night, on his way back from buying a late-night snack at a convenience store, he is suddenly summoned to another world. Confused, he is helped by Emilia without expecting anything in return, and he develops feelings for her, prioritizing her protection above all else. Meanwhile, he also cherishes Rem, who gives him unconditional love and support, and her presence becomes a significant emotional support for him in his lonely battle of returning by death.

He uses his only given power, the ability called "Return by Death," to struggle to save those around him from the fate of death. However, when he tries to talk about the "Return by Death" ability to others, he is struck by excruciating pain as if a mysterious black hand is crushing his heart, preventing him from speaking about it. Additionally, when he ignored the pain and revealed "Return by Death" to Emilia, it was Emilia's heart that was crushed instead of Subaru's. With each repetition of "Return by Death," the peculiar scent said to be emitted by the witch becomes stronger, causing those sensitive to the "scent," like Rem, to become wary of him.

He has a slight aptitude for magic of the shadow attribute and can use the magic "Shamak," which creates darkness, but his gate is uncontrollable, making him prone to mana depletion. However, by the middle of the story, he gains some control over it. During a battle with Garfiel, excessive use of his gate causes it to completely collapse, rendering him unable to use magic on his own thereafter. As a result, he cannot expel the mana accumulating in his body, so he supplies the excess mana by holding hands with Beatrice.

He has an extraordinary aptitude for something called "Witch Factors." When he killed Petelgeuse and Regulus, the Witch Factors they possessed entered him, allowing him to later use the Authority of Sloth, "Invisible Hand" (later named "Invisible Providence"), and the Authority of Greed, "Little King" (later named "Cor Leonis"). However, excessive use of these powers results in severe headaches. Additionally, for some reason, the effects of the Authority that devours others' memories and names do not affect him, allowing him to remember those who fell victim to the White Whale and the Sin Archbishop of Gluttony.
