Character Setting

Edit

Yukimura Sanada is a female student of the Bujitsu Academy Middle Division (depicted as a 15-year-old first-year high school student in the anime) and a brilliant but eccentric strategist in the Hyakka Ryōran Samurai Girls universe.

She is the namesake successor of the historic strategist Yukimura (Sanada Nobushige) and becomes one of Muneakira Yagyu’s samurai masters.

Name: Yukimura Sanada

Gender: Female

Age: 13 (original setting), 15 and a first-year high school student in the anime adaptation

Affiliation: Bujitsu Academy, Yagyu Dojo, anti-Tokugawa faction

Title/Role: Samurai master (kenki), tactician, student

Yukimura is small, slender, and often mistaken for an elementary school student because of her height and delicate build.

This misunderstanding irritates her deeply and is one of her biggest complexes.

Her trademark outfit is extremely unconventional: a white school swimsuit worn under a traditional sleeveless battle coat.

In the anime version, this coat becomes her dedicated samurai-master combat costume instead of everyday wear.

She also has a notably wide forehead.

Being teased about her forehead bothers her just as much as being mistaken for a child.

She cannot wash her hair without a shampoo hat, a childish quirk that contradicts her sharp mind and arrogance.

These contrasts between her appearance and personality are a big part of her charm.

Her constant companion is a small monkey named Sarutobi Sasuke, which serves as one of her visual trademarks.

Sasuke does not appear in the first season of the anime but is introduced in the second season.

Yukimura’s personality is arrogant and imperious, and she often speaks and acts with open confidence and lack of humility.

Despite this, her tactical insight lives up to the name of the legendary strategist whose name she inherited.

She is fiercely intelligent and analytical, always thinking in terms of strategy, advantage, and long-term plans.

Although she frequently appears selfish or bossy, her actions often push others—especially Muneakira Yagyu—toward growth and decisive action.

She strongly dislikes being underestimated because of her size or youthful appearance.

Comments about her height, childish image, or forehead can provoke intense reactions.

Yukimura is born into the revived Sanada family in a world where most warrior houses have been allowed to rise again, with one major exception: the Toyotomi clan.

She inherits the alternative name “Yukimura” from Sanada Nobushige, the famous strategist and general.

Her talents are recognized early, and she becomes known within the academy as a capable tactician, matching the historic reputation of her namesake.

Academically, she is a prodigy, with her advancement from the academy up through graduate school already guaranteed.

However, she chooses to give up her fast-track path in order to stay by Muneakira Yagyu’s side.

Instead of continuing alone, she skips ahead only far enough to join Muneakira’s class, entering as a younger but hyper-competent classmate.

Yukimura first appears before Muneakira Yagyu when he is still confused by the sudden arrival of Jubei Yagyu.

She arrives accompanied by Matabei Goto and then casually occupies space at the Yagyu Dojo, essentially moving in and refusing to leave.

At that time, the Toyotomi hunt is ongoing.

Although Yukimura personally opposes the persecution of the Toyotomi, she hesitates to openly challenge the student council’s authority at first.

Seeing Muneakira’s indecisiveness, she deliberately provokes and manipulates him into becoming the leader of the anti-Tokugawa faction.

Through this, she effectively sets up Muneakira as the symbolic and practical head of the resistance, with herself as the strategist behind him.

During the mission to rescue Jubei Yagyu and Sen Tokugawa, Yukimura becomes one of Muneakira’s samurai masters alongside Matabei Goto.

After forming this bond, she moves into the annex of the Yagyu Dojo with Jubei and Matabei, turning it into their shared base of operations.

In the anime version, the contract between Yukimura and Muneakira occurs differently.

While visiting Sen Tokugawa at her invitation, Muneakira suddenly rises from his bed, and by pure accident, this movement triggers the formation of the samurai-master pact with Yukimura; Matabei is not involved in this version of events.

Among Muneakira’s samurai masters, Yukimura’s abilities stand out as being more than just increased physical prowess.

Excluding Jubei, she is the only one whose powers include clearly defined supernatural enhancements beyond bodily strength.

Once their contract is formed, Yukimura gains telepathy and clairvoyant battlefield perception.

She can perceive and understand the overall state of a battlefield or situation, making her a living command center.

These powers perfectly complement her role as a strategist.

Combined with her already considerable intellect, they turn her into an unparalleled operations coordinator for the anti-Tokugawa faction.

In the anime, when she activates her samurai-master state, she uses the activation shout “Fushaku Shinmyo,” which expresses her readiness to devote body and life without regret.

This catchphrase highlights the contrast between her small body and her extreme resolve.

Yukimura’s main weapons are two enormous iron fans, each roughly as large and heavy as a metal baseball bat.

The outer edges of these fans are lined with metal pieces, making them well-suited for defense and parrying.

She often uses them to block attacks and to control enemy movements in close and mid-range combat.

Their size and weight allow her to create solid defensive walls despite her small frame.

For offense, Yukimura sometimes throws the fans like boomerangs.

This attack can be very powerful and far-reaching but comes with a critical drawback: while a fan is in flight, she is left with a major opening in her defenses.

Because of this, she must time her throws carefully and often relies on allies or her strategic foresight to cover her vulnerabilities.

Her fighting style is thus a blend of defensive technique, risky ranged strikes, and tactical positioning.

Muneakira Yagyu

Muneakira Yagyu is both Yukimura’s partner as a samurai master and the person she chooses to remain with instead of pursuing her solitary academic fast-track.

She pushes him to take decisive leadership against the Tokugawa-controlled student council, turning him into a symbol of resistance.

Their relationship is complex: she treats him as both a useful asset and someone she genuinely wants to support and guide.

Her decision to join his class and to live at the Yagyu Dojo shows that her attachment to him goes beyond pure calculation.

Jubei Yagyu

Jubei Yagyu affectionately calls her “Yukki,” a nickname that reflects their growing familiarity.

Yukimura often plays the role of the level-headed strategist trying to manage Jubei’s unpredictability and immense power.

They live together in the annex of the Yagyu Dojo.

Through their shared experience as Muneakira’s samurai masters, they develop a mixture of rivalry, camaraderie, and mutual reliance.

Matabei Goto

Matabei Goto initially appears alongside Yukimura as her subordinate.

Yukimura’s tactical mind and Matabei’s combat strength form a complementary partnership on the battlefield.

They fight together during the operation to rescue Jubei and Sen Tokugawa.

After becoming samurai masters to Muneakira, they both take up residence in the Yagyu Dojo annex with Jubei.

Sen Tokugawa

Sen Tokugawa is first involved with Yukimura during the events surrounding Jubei’s and Sen’s rescue.

Although their political positions can be at odds—Sen being part of the Tokugawa family and system Yukimura opposes—their connections through Muneakira and the Yagyu Dojo complicate things.

In the anime, Sen is directly involved in the circumstances leading to Yukimura’s contract with Muneakira, since it occurs while Muneakira is visiting her.

This creates a triangle of personal and political tension among Sen, Yukimura, and Muneakira.

Sarutobi Sasuke

Sarutobi Sasuke is Yukimura’s pet and partner, a small monkey that acts as an extension of her presence.

Sasuke is part mascot, part assistant, and helps reinforce her image as a quirky, genius strategist.

Sasuke does not appear in the first season of the anime adaptation.

The character is introduced in the second season, aligning the anime more closely with Yukimura’s original portrayal.

Yukimura’s daily life at the Yagyu Dojo is a mix of rigorous strategizing and unexpectedly childish habits.

Her inability to wash her hair without a shampoo hat contrasts humorously with her genius-level intellect and tactical gravity.

Her appetite is enormous despite her petite body.

She eats so much that she significantly drives up the “Engel coefficient” of the Yagyu Dojo—that is, the proportion of household spending consumed by food.

She cares a great deal about how she is perceived, especially about seeming childish or physically underdeveloped.

Accidental insults about her height, build, or forehead can instantly shift her from composed tactician to outraged young girl.

Yukimura is a recognized prodigy within Bujitsu Academy.

Her academic performance is so exceptional that her advancement all the way through graduate school had already been secured.

Despite this, she deliberately abandons the long-term academic fast track to remain with Muneakira Yagyu.

Instead of leaving everyone behind, she accelerates just enough to transfer into his class, aligning her education with his.

She also manages her own financial resources through stock trading.

By the fifth volume of the original story, she has amassed roughly one billion yen in capital as her personal war fund.

However, her fortune is wiped out by the aftermath of a financial event known as the “Reiman Shock.”

The resulting stock market crash leaves her completely broke, turning the once well-funded strategist into someone who must again rely on the Yagyu Dojo’s resources.
