Character Setting

Edit

Hanyuu Furude is a mysterious, otherworldly girl from the "When They Cry" series, taking center stage as the true identity of the deity worshipped in Hinamizawa Village and forming a vital partnership with Rika Furude through countless tragic time loops.

Hanyuu appears as a petite girl, with a stature similar to that of an upper elementary school student.

She has long, blue-purple hair and wears a distinctive shrine maiden outfit, which exposes her shoulders and arms.

A notable feature is the presence of two black, sharp horns on her head—one with a chipped tip, a mark of her self-consciousness.

In later story arcs, she dons the Hinamizawa school uniform to blend in as "Hanyuu Furude," introduced as Rika’s distant relative.

Depending on the adaptation, her bust size varies widely, ranging from flat-chested to notably well-endowed.

Her eyes are large and violet, conveying innocence and vulnerability.

She’s often seen holding or eyeing her beloved cream puffs.

Hanyuu is shy, sensitive, and easily flustered, often expressing herself with the phrase "Auu auu~".

She tends to speak with a childlike, timid tone and refers to herself as "boku" or "watashi".

Beneath her meekness, she harbors an unexpectedly clever and crafty side, even outwitting Rika at times.

She is deeply caring and maternal toward Rika, acting as her confidante, companion, and surrogate mother throughout their centuries of repeating tragedies.

Despite her long isolation and powerlessness to alter events directly, Hanyuu sometimes grows melancholy, dependent on Rika for emotional support, and initially resigns easily in the face of adversity.

She finds joy in small pleasures, especially sweets and time spent with friends, but dislikes spicy foods and alcohol, tastes she vicariously experiences through Rika.

When acting as the legendary "Oyashiro-sama," her demeanor becomes regal and commanding, sometimes sternly admonishing others for their actions.

Hanyuu is the true Oyashiro-sama, the guardian deity worshipped by Hinamizawa villagers.

Her origin is layered: canonically, she is a supernatural being, only perceptible to those affected by the village's mysterious syndrome, or to the Furude lineage’s chosen.

Through alternate scenarios in extended materials, she is revealed as a being called "Hai-Ryun Yeasomul Jedha"—an ageless, extradimensional traveler whose kind, the "People of Ryun," entered this world and were hunted for their horns, seen as marks of demonic ancestry.

She wandered Earth for centuries, tasked with subduing rogue members of her own kind who possessed human hosts.

Her past includes a tragic love with Rika Furude’s ancestor, Rika Furude, and motherhood to Ouka Furude—a story of happiness, loss, and sacrifice for the good of humanity.

After being betrayed by villagers and lords driven by greed, she went on a rampage until her daughter stopped her, leading Hanyuu to shoulder the sins of the village as the scapegoat "demon."

This supernatural burden led to the origin of Hinamizawa’s rituals and legends.

She continues to exist as an unseen advisor to Rika through nearly a century of deadly time loops.

As a godlike being, Hanyuu possesses extraordinary powers:

She can become invisible and inaudible to most, though people with heightened syndrome symptoms can sense her presence through sounds or feelings.

She manipulates time, allowing Rika to repeat timelines and retain memories across loops.

She can stop time, appear and vanish at will, and even make herself physically tangible.

Hanyuu creates protective barriers and sometimes interferes subtly with the world.

In some variants, she wields the sacred blade "Onigari no Ryuuou," said to house her own mother's will, capable of slaying supernatural beings and disrupting fate itself.

Her abilities wane over time, especially after long periods of despair, but are reignited by her determination to help her friends overcome the tragic cycles.

Rika Furude: Her confidante, closest friend, and the person she cares about most, whom she’s supported and protected for over a hundred years.

Ouka Furude: Her daughter in alternate versions, with whom she shares a deeply tragic yet loving bond.

Maebara Keiichi, Ryuuguu Rena, Sonozaki Mion, Sonozaki Shion, Houjou Satoko, and other club members: Initially unaware of her true nature, later accepting her as one of their own when she manifests as a student.

Miyo Takano: The series’ primary antagonist, whose actions become linked to Hanyuu’s suffering and the repeating tragedy.

Eua: In "When They Cry: Gou/Sotsu," a rival supernatural being, representing the adversarial force maintaining the time loops.

Hanyuu’s presence oversees generations of the Furude family, acting as a silent guardian and hidden legacy within the village.

Hanyuu is notable for her love of sweets, especially cream puffs, and her intense dislike for spicy food and alcohol (owing to her taste-bond with Rika).

She is frequently the target of Ryuuguu Rena’s affections due to her petite and "adorable" appearance, risking being "taken home".

Her design was inspired directly by fan interpretations of Oyashiro-sama, with creator Ryukishi07 incorporating the dual horns and purple hair found in early fanart.

Her childlike catchphrase "auu auu" and the suffix "-nano desu" have become popular memes in the fandom.

Though initially invisible, her role as the central figure behind the supernatural mysteries was a heavily guarded spoiler in early community discussions.

"The result of the dice is not decided by heaven, gods, or even by chance! It is your will—the will to pierce through everything and overcome, an unbeatable force of determination!"

"I’ve been taught this: The power to believe can break through fate and create miracles."

"Even if I am burdened with more sin than anyone else, it is precisely because of that, that I strive to be strong and kind."

"People cannot live alone. This is true even for demons. You are not alone. There are always people beside you who celebrate and pray for your existence."

"Strong will makes fate solid. An unwavering heart can break any destiny."

"If you keep fighting despite the pain of defeat, only then can you achieve victory."

"Please, don't run away, Rika. Whatever world you choose, if you fight to choose, that world will surely be wonderful. Don't settle for indecision."

"My name is Hanyuu! Do not call me Jedha ever again!"

"I finally understand. No matter how many times I repeat, this fate cannot be overturned—it is because of your strong will. I will not lose to you!"

Origin and Early History

Hanyuu was once an otherworldly being, her origins linked to another dimension or world.

She arrived in the world and encountered Rika Furude’s ancestor Rika Furude.

After a fateful reunion and marriage, they bore a daughter, Ouka Furude, living briefly in peace.

Due to a devastating epidemic, villagers and lords, blinded by greed and fear, inflicted cruelty on Ouka in pursuit of miraculous medicine.

Overwhelmed by rage, Hanyuu lost control and slew many villagers, until stopped by her daughter.

She chose to bear the village’s sins, becoming the symbolic scapegoat "demon," thus creating the local legends and rituals.

Recurrent Tragedies and the Time Loop

As the centuries passed, Hanyuu's physical form faded and she became an unseen companion to Rika Furude, the shrine maiden heir.

Rika alone could see and hear Hanyuu, who remained powerless to directly interfere in the human world.

Hanyuu guided and supported Rika over one hundred years of repeated timelines, all ending in tragic deaths.

Hanyuu initially remained a passive observer, unable or unwilling to change fate, which led to her being partly blamed for the cycle's perpetuation.

As Rika's despair deepened and Hanyuu’s power waned, both nearly surrendered to hopelessness.

Through the encouragement of Rika and her friends, Hanyuu resolved to take a more active role—manifesting physically as "Hanyuu Furude," joining her friends at school.

Climax and Breaking the Cycle

In the "Massacre Arc," Hanyuu’s involvement grows, as she accepts responsibility and pushes herself to help end the centuries-old tragedy.

In "Festival Accompanying Arc," she becomes visible and integrates with the club members, encountering the ultimate confrontation against Miyo Takano and the sinister fate befalling the village.

Her ability to manipulate time, create barriers, and even wield Onigari no Ryuuou proves decisive.

Together with Rika and their friends, Hanyuu helps to finally break the cycle, forging a true miracle through bonds and determination.

Gou/Sotsu and Later Developments

In the new "Gou" and "Sotsu" arcs, Hanyuu appears as a lingering "residual scent," unable to fully manifest in the new timelines.

She remains in the fragment space, guiding Rika from afar, and helps reveal the existence of Onigari no Ryuuou when new threats arise.

In the climactic battles, Hanyuu repairs her broken horn, restores Rika’s incomplete powers, and inspires the crucial miracle allowing Rika and Satoko to overcome the manipulations of Eua, a powerful otherworldly adversary.

Hanyuu’s role and background vary noticeably between the original game, console-exclusive storylines, and anime adaptations—sometimes emphasizing her supernatural origins, at other times her ties to the Furude family.

Her voice actress is Yui Horie, who also provides narration in the early DS versions.

In stage and live-action versions, her presence is hinted at, often as a mysterious force.

As a character, Hanyuu became iconic not only for her emotional depth but for the transformation she undergoes: from a helpless observer to an active catalyst in overcoming despair and forging miracles.

Her catchphrases and unique quirks continue to endear her to fans across multiple media.
